  1. for sloppy joe's? ← We're talking about "kosher deli style" Sloppy Joe sandwiches, right? Various deli meats and layers of rye bread with mustard. If we're talking about the tomato/chopmeat Sloppy Joes (yeesh!) , then I misunderstood.
  2. For me, it's a toss up between the Kosher Nosh in Glen Rock and Petak's in Fair Lawn. Two great kosher delis.
  3. Is the restaurant still scheduled to open on Jan 20? Things have been quiet for a while, I'm getting nervous! Also, if you're reading this Fink, will you still be doing wings on the regular menu? Thanks for any info! Looking forward to the reopening!
  4. This is great news! Fink, will you be offering all the items on the old menu when you reopen or will only certain items be available? Either way, I'm there! I can't wait!
  5. I've been to Minado's in Little Ferry before. I love it, but it's very expensive (about $25 for dinner, $15 for lunch) and it's always insanely crowded. That's why I love Majestic Buffet. This is the first "all purpose" buffet I have seen that offers "real" sushi instead of just vegetables or imitation crab wrapped in rice. Granted, the sushi isn't quite as good as Minado's, but it's decent and half the price, not to mention you get all of the other stuff included in the buffet. I will say, though, that Minado's udon noodle soup is terrific.
  6. I know that some people frown upon buffets, and some of them are truly awful, but when I find a good buffet, I love it. A new buffet in Wayne called Majestic Buffet opened a few months ago where Nationwide Electronics used to be. They are excellent. They have a big salad bar with different types of seafood, hot stations with the usual Chinese fare (but good quality) and a wide variety of dumplings. The best parts of this buffet, however, are the stir-fry and sushi sections. They have a sushi section that will make custom rolls for you (although they limit the amounts of some rolls that a person can get, understandably). They also have a grill/stir-fry section where you can select various meats for a chef to grill for you or create a stir-fry with various meats, shrimp and scallops (yum!), veggies, and noodles. They also offer Peking duck and noodle soups in this section. Finally, they offer a wide variet of desserts, including both hard and soft ice creams and a very good Italian-style cheesecake. Dinner is $12.95 on weekdays, and I think it's $15.95 on weekends. I went on the weekedns a couple of times and found it to be identical to the weekday dinner. Lunch is $7.95, but you don't get all the cool stuff like the custom sushi rolls or the stir-fry. The dining area is large, comfortable, and attractive as well. I love it! What other buffets are good in Northern NJ? Bon Buffet in Maywood used to be great, but they have gone downhill in recent years. Dynasty Buffet in Saddle Brook is good, but it's always jammed. Grand Buffet in Ramsey is good, and I've been going there for years, but now that I've sampled Majestic Buffet, it seems very limited! I've also been wondering about a place called J.P. Lee's in Millburn. Looks good, has anybody been there? Any recommendations (or suggestions on places to avoid) are welcome!

    Bagels

My favorite bagels are from Hot Bagels on Saddle River Road in Fair Lawn. My father used to get bagels from there every Sunday when I was a kid. The store isn't much to look at, but they make a great bagel! Waldwick (where I live now) has a Hot Bagels too, and although it's very good, it can't hold a candle to the Fair Lawn store.
  8. Scratch the brunch at The Office, at least for the next few months. I went yesterday and they told me they are cancelling it until at least January to make room for the football crowds! But hopefully it will be back soon! I would like to try that brunch at China 46. It sounds very good!
  9. The Office in Ridgewood has a very nice Sunday brunch for $12.95. In addition to the usual breakfast staples like bacon, sausage, etc. they usually feature 3-5 hot dishes, a few cold salads, and several desserts. They make fresh omlettes and waffles, and have a pasta station with pasta, grilled chicken, marinara, and vodka sauce. They also have a carving station which usually has turkey and some type of beef. I'm not a brunch expert, but I've been to a few and this is defintiely the best one in the price range. In fact, I'm thinking about going tomorrow. I'm getting hungry already!
  10. Well, Rachel, here is what I can tell you about the apple coffee cake, based on the one delicious slice I ate last night. The crumb topping is aboslutely amazing. There appears to be a large quantity of pecans mixed into the topping, which adds a wonderful flavor. The crumbs are nice and big too. The main cake base is almost like a pound cake in taste, but probably with a slightly coarser texture. It is very rich and flavorful. Finally, there is a layer of apples at the bottom of the cake. It is absolutely wonderful. Highly recommended!
  11. Well, I took a ride to Patisserie St. Michel today. They didn't have much left. The lady at the counter was probably the friendliest bakery attendant I have ever encountered. She gave me some samples of lemon meringue and a cream puff and we had a nice conversation during which I informed her I found out about the bakery on eGullet. Both were outstanding. The cream puff was probably the best I ever had, and it was definitely made with butter. I bought a sour cream apple coffee cake ($18). They are expensive, but the quality is absolutely outstanding. I don't have the time (or money) to shop there every week, but on special occasions I will definitely treat myself. Thanks to all!

    Chili

My favorite chili is the Full Moon Chili from the Blue Moon Cafe in Wyckoff. It's a bit different from traditional chili in that it's made with full sirloin chunks and without beans and it's very spicy. It's a bit expensive ($7 a serving, which come out to about a pint), but it is delicious.
  14. I'm really surprised at all of the negative feedback this restaurant is getting. I have been to the Ridgewood restaurant a few times and I really like it. As Tommy said, it is essentially a fast food or "fast casual" restaurant, and therefore it shouldn't be compared to fancy full service restaurants. The food is of decent quality and the portions are large. It's a bit more expensive than a typical fast food restaurant, but the quality is much better. My favorite dish is the Thai rice noodles with chicken, which is nice and spicy and very filling. I think it's an original concept for a fast casual restaurant, and when I can find parking, I'll continue to eat there. I recommend it.
  15. Hi everyone. This is my first post, although I've been lurking for about a month in the forums now. I haven't really bought from farmers' markets in a while (always used to think they were too expensive) but I have come to love the farmers' markets in Ridgewood and River Vale. I love buying the fresh herbs in Ridgewood for rock bottom prices. The River Vale market is very good too, and they have an Amish group there selling baked goods. The River Vale market seems to be almost as busy as the Ridgewood market (I couldn't even get in to the park on Thursday) and they could definitely use the mozzarella vendor there. Those guys make some good stuff!
