  1. fwiw, I had never met Corey and didn't know who he was (I'd heard of him), until about 6 weeks ago. but he seems very nice and affable. but in general, I've always found the service at any of the Momofukus to be just fine, if occasionally brusque. but as good as the food usually is, they could all be Peter Lugers' waiters and I wouldn't care. edit: I did like my last meal at Noodle Bar more than my last one at Ssam Bar...but that might be just because of a. overfamiliarity with the Ssam Bar menu and b. Ssam Bar was apparently out of the branzino.
  2. ok, that fried chicken is darn good. the grits with the prawns are addictive. and there's nothing wrong with that tongue in all its Teutonic glory.
  3. 4.75. like I said, I wasn't terribly impressed with the gelato. I was with the sorbet.
  4. well, I think Balthazar is well above Cafe d'Alsace...but that's not saying much. but I hope that Benoit is another level above Balthazar.
  5. its served at Gottino. how they procure it I don't know. but given the attention to detail and quality of the food at Gottino...I'm sure its handled well. if they're shipping it in daily from Philly (all of two hours) that's no different than all the restaurants serving Il Labatorio..
  6. another thing, a small cup of those sorbets is about a third of the calories in one coffee shop cookie.
  7. so now that Grom has opened in the WV, I finally tried it last night. gelato was very good but not as good as the best at Otto (let alone San Crispano!)....had the torroncino and the bacio. you know what was really good? the fruit sorbet....just awesome. light, ethereal, pleasingly tart, not sweet. just great. had the limone and the pompelmo rosa. btw, I assume all you Capogiro fans are aware that you can get it in NY, right?
  8. ?! they were serving it at Ssam Bar on Monday night...

Thanks, Nathan. I was just pointing out to anyone who might not be a regular reader of Eater that the restaurant is now officially closed, should anyone be interested. Prior discussion on this site centered on how the restaurant would be closing. Since I did not have first hand knowledge of the closure, I cited my source. I have no doubt that you knew of it well before this. ← sorry. it usually seems like everyone here reads Eater daily. just trying to avoid redundancy.
  10. oh heck...not only are sushi conveyor belts all over the place (and kind of fun)....but I remember being in D.C. during the 80's at a museum (maybe the National Gallery of Art?) and the lunch cafe used a conveyor belt setup.
  11. well, Kampuchea reminded me a lot of Fatty Crab....which I enjoy plenty (although nothing I had at Kampuchea was as as good as the pork and watermelon salad or the fatty duck....but I can certainly believe that there could be dishes that good). the difference is that I live two blocks from Fatty Crab.
  12. if I compared my last couple meals at each...I definitely wouldn't see the clear daylight between them that I used to. hmmm...maybe it's time to eat at all three on consecutive nights....
  13. my meal at Ssam Bar the other night was kind of off. but then my meal a couple weeks ago was very good. my last meal at Noodle Bar was very good. but Ko's been sort of the object of my Momofuku affections and attentions lately. time to return to Noodle Bar....Sneakeater was raving about the fried chicken the other day.
  14. Kampuchea isn't expensive....but I was a little underwhelmed. I really should give it another try.

well....if someone eats at Momofuku Noodle I'd expect them to notice there are maybe two ramen dishes and about 30 completely unrelated ones. Resto's more like 6 Belgian dishes and about 15 unrelated ones.

    Resto

had an excellent pig's ear salad here last night (among other things). various greens, soft-boiled egg, beans, pig's ear. it just worked. a bunch of very tasty looking specials up on the chalkboard. gotta pay attention to that. folks, this isn't a Belgian restaurant. it's only nominally Belgian. if anything, it's a bit closer to Momofuku Noodle.....which sparks the same sort of misunderstanding.....(a crapload of people just eat ramen there and then complain that it's not authentic....why are you eating ramen there! you're missing the point!)
  17. well, yeah! neither of the lamb belly dishes hold a candle to that one.

yeah, it was all over Eater last week.
  19. last night I arrived around 9...we were seated immediately but the place was basically full. when we left at 10, it was half empty. but Monday night is generally a slow night...while say Wednesday is kind of the new Friday. with that said, I'd imagine that Tuesday would be more like Monday.
  20. you know, the new lamb belly prep is fine...but it's just nowhere near as good as the old one.
  21. yeah, I've never quite figured out what a dash means...I just put in whatever I feel like or whatever has worked in the past.
