  1. Holly, you didn't say it had to be cheap... the bar at Smith and Wollensky's. You could waltz in there wearing a Hawaiian shirt, mesh shorts and flip flops and nobody would care. Or notice. It's not dimly lit and it's usually not low key, but if you can deal with the frequently upbeat atmosphere, it's one place in town where you can definitely eat your steak at the bar dressed like a bum, by yourself, and watch the Phillies lose on the flat screens without feeling out of place. It's a pretty unique place in that respect.
  2. The other nine, pray tell? See you in May.
  3. Veracruza's within the geography of the original post. Open til midnight every night I think. And if I recall, ample parking. (Day or night. People shouting "Hola vecino?")
  4. BYO story #6142: a friend who used to work at Audrey Claire swears that several years ago a party came in with tequila, margarita mix, bagged ice and a blender, and asked the hostess for a "table by an outlet." Possibly apocryphal, but from the horse's mouth.
  5. If you time it right, the Rooster.
  6. I love a hater; what's especially great about his hate, however, is that when he is actually moved to praise rather than bury, he goes so large I wanna break out one of those big styrofoam "we're #1" fingers and do a victory lap around the room for the restaurant under review. Case in point: Horizons.
  7. Almost forgot, I checked this place out over Thanksgiving. The andouille sausage I got was really, really weak and the roll it was served on was even worse, but the fries were absolutely phenomenal. Possibly the best I've ever had in Philly. They're what the crab fries at Chickie and Pete's aspire to be.
  8. It'll work just fine. It's Rittenhouse, not Northern Liberties. Although it sounds ironic (it's not) nobody around the Square would quietly put up with someone else jumping the unwritten queue. Handbags would fly.
  9. Title kind of says it all. Suggestions? Looking to experiment with some French classics and Publix isn't going to suffice... Thanks.
  10. For the sake of trivia: "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle" was co-written by a Penn grad, Jon Hurwitz (class of 2000.) I'm going to send him a link to these White Castle posts, I'm sure it'll make him smile.

This looks and sounds awesome. Can you describe its contents/prep a little more? This looks like something I'd like to make at home to serve to guests. Tom

Speaking of Korean, does anyone ever go to Pastoral, ever? I used to really like it there. And if I ever had to do a clandestine document swap in Center City, it'd probably be there.
  13. You mean Twenty21, don't you? What had been Cutter's changed ownership and names several years ago. I loved those gorgonzola waffle fries, too, but Cutter's took them off the menu about six or seven years ago, iirc. Have you been back and have they been reinstated? ← That was the joke.
  14. Gorgonzola waffle fries at Cutters. But seriously folks, anyone wanna talk about how over-hyped the fries are at Monk's? More often limp than not.
  15. Interesting thread. After a laughably bad experience at Raw a year or so ago, I was primed to post about it on here, but ultimately chose not to, only because I knew that their management reads the board and I didn't feel like starting something. (What made the experience so laughably bad was not merely the food - like the watery "homemade" ramen - or the service - our waiter misunderstanding the meaning of omakase - but rather management's behavior in the dining room. Thus my post would have necessarily come across as ad hominem.) In hindsight, I really wish I had written that post. Edited to clarify that "ad hominem" refers to my post-that-wasn't, not to management's behavior in the dining room. tmk
  16. Salt baked shrimp at Shiao Lan Kung, coffee at Ray's, and I second the fried soy sauce noodles at Hand Drawn.
  17. First time I've ever recommended this place for anything, ever, but... Pod?
  18. In town for two weeks. Anywhere new since early spring that shouldn't be missed? Lunch in particular; think I have dinners under control. Thanks! Tom
  19. Prune! My favorite restaurant in all of NYC.
  20. I'm headed to OMK Monday night to celebrate the end of my first year of law school. We're getting the tasting menu; I'll be sure to report back in full... Tom
  21. Thanks Katie, that's very kind of you. I actually do have plans to be in Old City early tomorrow afternoon so if at all possible, I'll be sure to stop in and ask for you! Tom
  22. Thanks! I'm not going to be going too far so I think I'll give the Pulpo a shot.
  23. Thanks, this is really very helpful! Of course I just looked at those pics in the other thread and now I'm wondering about getting one of those pigs carved up and packed up for takeout.
