  1. I've ben in Barcelona for 7 years and I'm still learning. When I think of the money I've wasted on mediocre menu del dias that I could have saved and spent on great food it depresses me.

    Anyway, I went to Quimet i Quimet tonight for the first time on the recommendation of many on here.

    Wow.

    We placed ourselves entirely in the hands of Joanna Quimet, who chose some simple wonderful food for us. A platter of smoked fish,  then foie gras, then pate with setas and truffle oil, some croquetas, some cheese montaditos, each matched with an appropriate wine....

    15 euros per person.

    HOW have I missed this place?  Phenomenal value. I'll be back - thank you, everyone who's mentioned this place.

    This menu is at lunch? It sounds wonderful!

    Edited to add, I looked around the forum and found the recommendation under Barcelona recommendations. It is a tapas bar, sounds good, I will try it.

  2. Everytime I see a new post on this thread, I click, hoping it is the recipe for the Gateau Breton. Alas.... not here yet. Bleu, I think it is your fault, we are all in agreement here :laugh: ! I am dying to taste this cake!

    I will be in Barcelona next week, maybe I can pick up some almonds at the market. What is this Paula's cake? Did I miss something? I would love to make it.

  3. I think your idea of having lunch is a great one. The quality does not go down because of the time of the meal, just the amount and number of portions. I do not think you will receive cheesebuger quality, no disrespect intended to the previous poster.I would also recommend Le Meurice. Please do let us know what you do decide.

  4. I don't want to plan too much.

    Planning too little can be just as bad - or worse!

    I agree it can be just as bad or worse, but as I am traveling this time with todos los ninos, I don't think some of these resto's are truly appropriate for this type of vacation. Food as an art is wonderful, but I want them to experience food as in "this is your heritage", at least on this trip. My husbands' and my grandparents were Spanish and we are 2nd generation Cuban, my children 1st generation American!

    I will try making reservations at other restaurants later this week. If you have any other suggestions,as in where a typical Spanish family would eat out iit would be most greatly appreciated. Otherwise I have gotten some very good suggestions from Gulleteers and others. :biggrin:

    web w. Marakkesh along side of it! Do they serve

    only a set meal or is there an a la carte menu?

    -Temp au Temp sounds interesting & we will try

    to add it on.

    -No, we are not huge eaters....but it is so difficult

    to resist trying the restaurants I read about on

    egullet & in various magazines. Obviously, I need more

    time in Paris!

    -Has anyone visited Auguste?

    Le Comptoir Paris that is popping up is another restaurant. Yve's restaurant is called Le Relais de Comptoir. Search that and you will get the correct resto.

    Is Grande Rue the name of a street,? It seems to me there is part of the name missing. You might want to double check.

  6. I have resurrected this old thread to see if anyone can give me some suggestions or favorite recipes for veal chops. I just bought some beautiful ones at Wegman's but honestly have never cooked veal.

    I have eaten it a couple (literally) of time at restaurants where they have been sered or pan roasted with a veal jus and mushrooms.

    Would anyone care to share their favorite recipe with me? Merci Bien, Muchas Gracis and Thanks!

  7. They all sound great, I think Cinc Sentits is a definate as I have my three kids also, (ages 9,12,16). Can Roca maybe...(by ourselves). Hispania sounded great but it may be cost prohibitive with so many of us. Any suggestions on good local cuisine, that a family in Barcelona may go to?

    Thank you all so much for all the advice so far. We will be there, the 13th-thru the 17th of October, should I make reservatons yet or wait?

  8. I have been reading through the Barcelona/Catalunya threads until I am crosseyed. There are so many restaurants that are highly reciommended, but what if you had three or four nights and wanted a combination of traditional, and nouveau that don't break the bank? To narrow it down, I would like restaurants that are within commuter rail distance or within Barcelona. Pedro, Bux, VSerna, DocSconz? I pose this question on this thread as it seems to be the same general question. Gracias por sus repuestas!

    Please, please don't think I am questioning your judgement so please don't you question it either. (did that make sense?) Taste is always subjective. I advised Doc to ask you about it so he could get two sides of the story! You have had much more experience with Villaret than I have. I loved it but who knows next time I may go and find it so-so.

    By the way I found the food very girly :biggrin:

  10. You may want to also ask John about Villaret, he is not much of a fan. But if you do a search on egullet my posting on the night we went there will come up, and I have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Talbott. :raz:

    Villaret is most definately along the lines of Epi Dupin but better. By modern, I mean not classic but oh so original and true to the French method. When I went there were very few Americans there, and the owner seemed to know most of who walked in.

    Astier is also in the tune of Epi Dupin but meilleur(better). They also have an awesome cheese tray they bring to your table, which you serve yourself. The only caveat is you have approximately 2 minutes to serve the entire table!

    I really think you will love this area. The Canal Saint Martin is a lovely area. There is a wonderful little wineshop there, if I think of the name I will tell you. Buy a bottle, (bring you own glasses, they can't sell or give you disposibles) and go to the canal with your children, let them run wild and enjoy the beautiful afternoon you will most surely have in September.

    I am off to Paris tomorrow evening after a 3 months hiatus. If I can help with anything, let me know.

  12. I stayed in the exact same area with my children last year. Goncourt was right at the corner. If you want to stay in the neighborhood try Astier. I have been there at least 3 or 4 times in the past year and have never been dissappointed.

    As for the area being lively, there is no need to fear. I imagine you are on Rue Faubourg du Temple, and whatever direction you go in is lively..ahem.

    Villaret is a great little resto, I don't know why it does not get talked up more! I don't remember what I ate there, bur it was modern French and the owner has a great respect for good wines.

  13. I just read this entire thread. I have neglected Spain and it's food for far too long! But out of curiosity, how many have actually smuggled Jamon back into the states? ANd has anyone gotten caught? When I am working (crewmember for a major airline), I will only bring back that which is legal or if I can feign stupidness. We receive fines into the thousands for bringing back illegal stuff.

  14. I have all his cookbooks, sad but true... If anyone needs any recipe, PM me. I am trying to follow this also, somewhat adjusted. I cannot give up my wine, but I can limit it.

    Today for breakfast was Berries, mixed with Fatfree Greek Yoghurt, Pecans, and a very high Fiber, high protein cereal, called GoLean Crunch. It was very low GI, would that be considered Montignac acceptable Bleu?

    Montignac has flip flopped on his original views if you join his web diet. It costs 13.95 a month. I joined for one month and bought all his books in France and found they did not honor each other. He has revesed a bit on the cheeses and such. I also found his web based plan was hard to follow unless you have all day to spend in the kitchen! He gives no specifics but gives a menu with recipes. They look wonderful but alot of the products you would be running all over town for!

    He also has a new book named The French Diet, the real reason French women don't get fat. It is a book specifically for the USA

    I imagine the true diet is a low GI diet. How are you doing on it? Please post your results, I would love to go along with this also. I have about 20lbs I could very happily lose! But I love cooking and eating so much!!!

  16. We had dinner at Pazo last night. It was very good. Mediterranean small dishes, great winelist at resonable prices, personal pizzas and artisan breads from their woodfired oven. ALl very very good and original. The place itself is beautiful and the prices are resonable. I heartily recommend this restaurant.

  17. I enjoy Evening Star very much. The fact that is is close to DCA and I work with one of the owners helps. I love the fact that I can pick my wine at Planet and have it served next door. But I enjoy their appetizers above all else. The quail stuffed with Chevre is my favorite thing on the menu. (I am supposing it is still on their as I haven't been in months! But there desserts are awful! (Sorry Christy) They need a new pastry chef or rather they need a pastry chef! If you go, skip dessert and just go accross the street and order ice cream!
