  1. I think we should stage a protest. Set up tables and umbrellas and have lunch on the lawn at City Hall.
  2. Lorenzo's - best Scampi in town. Now a Greek restaurant or it was last time I drove by. could be gone by now.
  3. I second Maria's and Taki's on Davie is also very good.

    Tofino

I heard that SOBA started its engine and drove over to the Tofino Botanical Gardens in the old Pamploma (sp?) site.
  5. A bundle was just dropped off at Urban Fare. Most wine stores have it including Vintropolis and Marquis. On 4th Ave. check Duthie Books and another lot will be delivered to Capers. awaiting the details...sent the email this morning...keep up the good work ←
  6. Hi Merlin, we are distributing to some hotels and not sure about Ocean Pointe. Could be that they were sold out...thanks for your kind words and you can always subscirbe for a measly few bucks! just go to www.eatmagazine.com and have it delivered to your door. cheers
  7. thanks for all the positive response. We are working on distribution -- not an easy thing due to space constraints and having the new kid on the block (Vancouver being the block) getting the foot in the door. We plan on focusing more and more on Vancouver and will have more drop sites in the very near future. Meanwhile, please pick up a few extra copies and pass them around, cheers, Jane Mundy
  8. hmmm the plot thickens. Gord Martin (Go Fish, Bins 941,942) told me that he buys salmon fresh from the boats just a few steps from his shack. A private eye may be required.

    Brix

well said Deborah never Dorothy. the strangest thing though - when I asked the hostess for Dorothy's table, she said "is that the party of nine?" and I replied in the affirmative which led to even more confusion. I felt rather silly as I hate being late especially for dinner reservations. note to self: make a point of remembering people's names...like Carmen, the check-out girl at Donald's market on Hastings Street (and a great place for produce). She has memorized 1,300 customer's names!!!! But back to Brix: to reiterate Deborah, the meal was good not great but whaddya expect for a measly 25 bucks. My elk sirloin was tender with deep earthy flavours although I missed the truffle oil. But I would go again and having dinner with foodie strangers (not anymore) was a treat.
  10. if you have the opportunity to go back to Chambar and sit at the bar, ask bartender David Fesq to pair a few beers -- I learned a lot while having dinner at the bar and learned to really appreciate Belgian beer. A few faves are Hoegaarden and seafood, Chimay Red with halibut and Stout or Bellevue Kriek with chocolate - the latter being a total surprise and quite wonderful. And for more info, check out the latest EAT magazine -- Food with the Perfect Pint
  11. I once ate a slug by mistake. We were camping and it secretly slipped into an open can of Clamato juice. Next morning I had a Ceasar (with Vodka) and just as I tilted the glass for my last sip, it slurped down my throat. Needless to say I had to have a nip of Vodka after that.
  12. what about the Cannery? You can't get much closer to the waterfront than a window seat there. And the food ain't too bad either.
  13. Have you tried Mix bakery on 10th - next to Burgoo. They make an amazing chocolate "oblivion" flourless cake and peanut butter pie is addictive but they only stay open until 6pm. "Life is uncertain, Eat dessert first"
  14. For ambience, I would say Calabria. It isn't designer coffee like Artigiano but I love the tacky decor. Forget all the double latte with no fat or skim or whatever you're supposed to order and just go for a regular coffee.
  15. Raincoast crisps has some heavy competition from the new C restaurant crackers. Try the ones with black sesame and nori...and if you feel flushed, sample them at the source. They're on Urban Fare's shelves.
  16. the best Mexican this side of the Rio Grande, and I'm not even a distant relative, is Tio Pepe's on Commercial. It's a closet of a room but done up like one fiesty pinata with authentic Yucatan style and flavours. And another just down the street, although not Mexican it's worth mentioning -- Rinconcito Salvadoreno restaurant. check it out just to acquaint yourself with the Herrera family...homey.
  17. I would highly recommend the new culinary school, northwest culinary institute - a few people have already suggested. I went there last week, interviewed the chef/owners (both taught at Dubrulle) and got the feeling that this place has more to offer, smaller classes and they really care about their students, most importantly, they have a tough screening process so you don't waste your $$
  18. I'll pass your request on to one of the "chefs without borders", just so I don't get in trouble divulging secrets. But I can tell you that there are a few in town, that I know of anyway.
