  1. YES!!! Helps prevent the "Honey, do you think this is still okay?" debate...
  2. Gotta keep encouraging culinary diversity in this town!
  3. FYI- Mother's Good Food (which I mentioned in a post upthread) is now open. SO and I popped in early Saturday evening for a reckie. The menu is essentially unchanged from their previous incarnation up on Calhoun Rd, but the beer & wine selection is much expanded. No Dixie or Vodoo beer as of yet (I assume Katrina-related delays) but a variety on tap, primarily Empyrean brews). We had GREAT oyster po'boys, d'lish crawfish gumbo, good jambalaya & avg. red beans & rice (I sauced them up quite a bit). Closed Sundays except for bar business in the eve w/ live music. This Friday nite (to celebrate their re-opening) will also feature some NO music.
  4. Other suggestions- Hector's (Baja-Mexican) 2 locations Ellada (Greek) 2 locations Fetas (Greek) Mark's (Bistro) Mediterranean Bistro Saigon (Vietnamese) And Mother's Good Food (Cajun) is reopening after New Year's in a new location, having taken over the old Saddle Creek Bar space.

    Shallots

Blanch with boiling water, then stir, drain, and immerse in cold water to prevent cooking. Drain again, and peel. The skins slip off much more easily.
  6. Support your local public television stations. We NEED "television worth watching."
  7. I'm never without horseradish mustard for pork or german-style sausages! Also, a little grated horseradish is good with a medium sharp cheddar.
  8. This occasionally happens with a batch I've made. If the lemons or limes have not yet released enough juice to cover, I simply upend the jar. Alternate top & bottom every couple of days until no longer needed. I most often use them with roasted chicken.

    Wine.com

I used to be a regular customer of wine.com until they were bought out by eVinyard. The change was not for the better. I really miss the great service and reading Peter Granoff's "picks." Some of the best wines I have ever tried were a result of his recommendations.
  10. Schielke, I'm really enjoying this thread! Between reading about your planning and honeymoon trip experiences & furiously jotting notes from all the advice you received, I think I've formed the bare bones for a trip of my own . Looking forward to hearing more about it all! PS. Congratulations to you and Katie
  11. No, but Dixie Quicks is run by a drag queen- lots of memorabilia in the place. He serves up pretty good southern food!
  12. How about these restaurants from Omaha: Nooner's Deli Mo' Napkins Smokehouse Dixie Quicks
  13. Thanks for the suggestion, Marlena! One of things that is on my"to do" list is to try some of the artisanal cheeses from the area. I keep reading posts here and in articles in Saveur, etc. on different smaller producers that are making wonderful cheeses. I knew that Cow Girl Creamery has a shop in the Ferry Building, but I wasn't sure which other shops to visit. Will have to save any LARGE purchases for my last day in town, since I'm planning to fly back with my favorites...

    Baked Brie

One of BHG's appetizer magazines featured a recipe that always gets raves when I serve it. In addition to the carmelized onions, the cheese is topped with apricot spread and toasted hazelnuts. The whole is wrapped in phyllo, instead of puff pastry. You can find the recipe here.

    SF Microbrews

I took a look at their website & they were really promoting their pizza, etc. Any good? Love the beer, and the bleu

    SF Microbrews

Thanks to both of you for the info- I printed out the tour sheet & will definitely give the Anchor Steam folks a call next month! Several of the suggestions look good & I'll be sure to post my reviews when I get back. (after recovery, that is)
  19. Thanks to you also, Malik! I'm looking forward to your review. Just printed out the menus to most of the places you mentioned & Zarzuela does look good! Will check out the Cesar's lineup shortly. I should have some interesting posts on my return home...
  20. I've been reading/posting to various threads picking up info for a July trip to SF. Several microbreweries have come up & I would appreciate any thoughts on these or any others folks think are worth a stop: Anchor Steam Brewery Gordon Biersch Microbrewery Thirsty Bear Brewery San Francisco Brewing Co. Thanks!
  21. Thank you, Marlena! Your favorites sound intriguing- especially the artichoke dishes. As you might imagine, I'm having trouble narrowing down my choices for the four days I'll be in town, so the various threads in this forum have been lots of help!
