Is that a Freudian slip there Steve?? The Queeeeeezy Bistro? DA

Dear God I didn't need to see that! Then again, my gall bladder was removed 5 years ago ... how bad could this be?? DA

Nick's is OK IMO. It was better (or at least seemed to be) when I was back in university. Nick's is more 1950's style Italian ... like Stanley Tucci's competitor's place in "Big Night" (which gives me another idea for an eGullet dinner! ). If you're into quantity, Anton's or Anducci's does that well, and their food is better than Nick's. If you're into quality, stovetop, eatbc and nwyles have it covered. DA

Well perhaps that's because Vancouver doesn't have just ONE hip place. There is perhaps a Top 5 or Top 10, but they're spread out over the city ... but I'd have to give Yaletown the nod right now as the ONE area. But montmarte, if you're looking for trendiness to help make up your mind, I think you're on your own. Anyone mention Bin 941/942 yet? DA

Don't they have a Curry in a Hurry in the food court at Lansdowne? That would assume I actually travel to Richmond I like your "current obsession" ... have you seen the peach picture on Laksa's foodblog?? DA

It's raining in August in Vancouver, so it must be PNE time. Besides the obvious Tom-Thumb Donuts, what are your favorite things to eat & drink at our annual fair? For those who attend other fairs out of town, please pipe in with your faves. I will make one trip to the PNE this year ... my MUST haves include Butter Chicken from Curry in a Hurry, corn dogs, and pergogies from Hunky Bills. DA

I'll be starting a new thread for the Bourdain in Vancouver eGullet Event later in September. In the meantime I've been scanning the board for an indication of who's coming. However, it would be a lot easier on my tired old eyes if you just PM'd me. Include your name (real, not handle) and the number who will be attending. Once the new thread starts, I'll post an updated list, and we'll provide info on the dinner as well. Everyone enjoying the rain? DA

Here in Burnaby we have the Western Canadian HQ for McD's, as well as a Mc-U. They have a McCafe, complete with a huge patio and a large outdoor fireplace. Very nice looking, but during a visit last night (just to use the washroom ... seriously!) I couldn't help but notice it still smelled like a McD's. You can dress it up, but it still is what it is. You??? Indelicate?? Seriously Keith, what do you REALLY think? I mean, what did poultry ever do to you?

I was going to add this to one of the many other threads on the topic of tipping, but this story has a celebrity in it!.

I can't comment on Southpark either ... but Park Kitchen was terrific when we visited. DA

A little dramatic don't you think ! Well, you know these chefs ... next to poets on the dramatic scale I had a really terrific sausage last weekend at Paprika in Victoria ... chicken with chantrelles & carraway seed. Very tasty, although it lacked a little in the fat department which to me makes for a really great sausage. It was served with a selection of pickles gerkins, cabbage, beets & carrots. Hard to find good pickles these days. Provence Marinaside does a nice meguez sandwich for lunch ... but I'm partial to lamb. Cioffi's lamb sausage is good too. DA

No kidding! Apparently mentioning Jamie's name at Lumiere will get you a beer for about $6! Although I'm pretty sure that's a Kokanee I'll volunteer to keep the "LIST" for the group ... God knows I have NOTHING else to do. Besides, it'll give me an excuse to come down for some pastrami. Right Neil??? PM me with your name (real & handle), and number attending. DA

For me it's raw onions. Doesn't matter if they're red, white, walla walla ... raw onions do me in. What's odd is that if they're cooked I'm fine. DA

Chef Fowke - I stumbled onto this site about a year ago and have not been an active member , just the occasional reader. Fill me in on the different levels on membership so I can be at the right level and know the secret handshake. Neil, You need to get to 20 or 30 posts before you kick into "member" status. We want to keep out all those wannabees Any pastrami left? I was trying to get over to see you before I left on vacation, but couldn't (I'm emailing from my father-in-law's in Victoria before we go camping at Rathtrevor... Keith, say a prayer for me!), and won't be back until the 16th. Let us know if you have any luck with a Bourdain contact from Barabara-Jo. DA

Looks amazing! A very similar treatment to what my family did when I was growing up ... although Norwegians don't know what banana leaves are, let alone what to do with them! Question: In Manitoba, do you get Pacific or Atlantic salmon, or both? This blog is making me smile a lot. I think we have about 4 or 5 of the Best of Bridge cookbooks in our library. Yes, please post the marmalade recipe! Any chance of posting a recording of Mitsu??? For the Canadian readers ... is that the same Mitsu who sang "Bye Bye Mon Cowboy"?? DA -
jhoroshi, here's the thread tofino was talking about CLICK HERE Thanks for the update tofino ... you, Paul & stovetop (amongst others) do a great job of keeping us up to date on your little section of paradise. DA

MMMMMMMMMMMMM .... Kruellers I can feel the sugar rush already! I liked them lots better before they started freezing the dough in ON and then shipping it. Still, best damn use of fat & dough I know of! DA -
Hunh. The conversation in my house usually runs, "I was just going to do a load of laundry, do y-" "YES! HERE! Thankyouthankyouthankyou!" The first speaker is then buried in a morass of dirty linen and abandoned. We alternate filling the above roles. Well I'm glad our's is not the home where laundry is an area of discussion. My wife REFUSES to let me do her laundry ... probably a smart move. Having each of us do our own laundry seems assinine to me, in addition to being wastefull, so she does it all. It's not like I won't do it, she just won't let me. However, I do FOLD everything, and do it much better than she could. Cooking is split 50-50, with the non-cooking partner doing the clean-up. I swear she takes advantage of this rule, as I have never seen anyone create as big a mess while cooking! Do you really need 4 bowls, 2 measuring cups & the mandoline to make soup & grilled cheese?? DA

Woohoo Brandon! Really looking forward to this! By the way, your sister & I live in the same city Perfect! A small slice of Canadiana ... but no TimBits?? I damn near fell of my chair when I read this! For years I thought my grandmother was the only one who put cot pits in the jam! eGullet is great for so many things! Your restaurant looked like one of many places I ate at growing up in Burnaby. If you've not been, ask your sister about The Dragon Inn or The Rickshaw. Go Wheat Kings! DA -
Ha! I've been telling my sons (ages 10 & 13) that the trades are an excellent way to go. If the shortage of qualified trades I'm experiencing today is any indication, the right trade would be a great help to my kids ... as they support me in early retirement. I hope so ... it's kinda like we're all living every episode of "Opening Soon" I've ever seen .. and no the irony isn't lost on me. J is taking me to Paprika in Victoria instead, after a week of camping with the kids. I hope I fare better than Mr. Talent! Okay Jamie ... whaddya want?? DA

I thought for sure someone was going to mention "Brownies" DA

Okay Jamie, either I'm completely blind, or I have the wrong Fisherman's Warf for Go Fish. I was down there last night with my wife & our dogs, and believe me, if there was fried fish around, the dogs & I would have sniffed it out! There was no deck, no trailer ... no fish! Any word? Also wondering if Chambar is on sched for next weekend. I have a birthday coming up ... DA

Daddy-A's Excellent Portland Adventure
Daddy-A replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Dining
Day 3 - Sunday J & I are typically big breakfast people on Sunday. A couple hours watching the weekly recap of "Coronation Street" on the CBC, and then it's off for brunch! The Daily Cafe got the nod this morning, mostly because it was in The Pearl, and we had some other shopping to take care of before we returned home to the Great White North. While we waited for a couple large tables to get cleared up (about 15 minutes), we had a chance to read over the menu. The Daily Offers a "fixed price" brunch for around $10-12 (didn't take notes) which seemd a pretty good value judging from the size of the plates leaving the kitchen. We're not normally "lots of food = good meal" people, but for breakfast it does have some influence. The Daily really pays off here. We weren't horribly hungry (beer and gumbo fills you up!) J ordered the Huevos Rancheros and I had a Panini with shaved smoke turkey. My Panini (which was only okay) was served with The Daily's special home fries, which I initially thought were cold. It was later I realized the potatoes were hot, but the caramelized onions were cold. I'm not sure if this was done on purpose, but it was really yummy! Kinda like the cold bits of roasted veggies the day after Christmas dinner. J's eggs were served with salsa and a cheese quesadila. She's not a big egg person, so if she liked them, they must have been okay. What was cool was the little garnish on the eggs. The looked like a small pea pod, but we later discovered they were a member of the radish family. Never seen anything like them before. The rest of the day was spent shopping. Our favorite find? Powell's Books! OMG! We could have spent the entire weekend there without trouble. You PDX'ers are so lucky. The other thing we searched for was a couple bottles of the Sokol Blosser Roser. Unfortunately, wine stores seem to be closed on Sunday. Fortunately, you have Whole Foods. Vancouver is supposed to be getting one soon, and this will be one time I whole-heartedly welcome American expansion! So that was our short, but fulfilling trip to Portland. I will regroup and post about the Brewfest in the Beer forum if I can ever decipher my notes! Thanks again to all who contributed their opinions and helped make my first trip to your beautiful city a great one. We'll be back soon! DA
