  1. For those of you lucky enough to be going on Sunday, here's the menu: mmmmmm .... duck! A.
  2. "I have seen the enemy, and he is us" - Pogo (Walt Kelly, 1958) A.
  3. I agree with Stephen ... nice run down on the menu. Nicely written, well described as to likes/dislikes & why/why not. The post could have stood on it's own without the attention grabbing headline. And your experiences are not without company. HERE is a thread from a few years back. "C", like Feenie, seems to be a favorite whipping-boy around here. A.

I though we Trounced all the trolls from this place. Does she get a reward for using "jerk-off" and "salami" in the same post? Please, don't make us beg. A.
  6. Damn that's cool! I'm just trying to figure out how to ditch my family during our annual vacation, make it to Reno to help, and then return without anyone noticing. PM BBQ Brian ... he's a local competitor who's competing at the Canadian Championships this weekend. Good luck! A.
  7. yes. Main and Broadway is now known as "SOMA" or "south main". Just like south Granville is Granville and broadway. Don't ask. Yeah, as in SOUTH of downtown, Duh! A.
  8. Why not? We've seen your "staged" food porn. Now, we want the real thing!! nice work btw A.
  9. Is anyone else shaking their head at the logic that says: "I just sliced off part of my thumb and may need medical treatment. Shall I get myself to see a doctor? Nah! I'll log onto eGullet ... they'll know what to do!" A.
  10. I've got my eye on THIS bad boy that logs the temperatures into a Palm Pilot. Also available in wireless! Try soaking the tea leaves and wrapping them in a foil package. Pierce the foil to allow the smoke to come out, and then toss it on the coals. I'm thinking you'd have to replace the package a few times as the tea leaves would likely burn out before much flavour got in. About the chicken on top or bottom ... I've always put them on top as they take less time so will be removed from the bullet sooner. The heat of the bullet is more than enough to kill any nasty bugs. A.
  11. Tickets go on sale Friday:
  12. Klary, Sorry 'bout that. It was just my jovial way of saying that based on an educated guess on where Shelora would suggest you visit, a lot of that would require a car. You'll love Vancouver Island, with or without a car. It's just that without a car you'll be spending most (if not all) time in Victoria. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just that there's so much more to see on Vancouver Island, especially from a fodd-lover's point of view. Perhaps another trip? A.
  13. Foodie: Reposted for your amusement: A.
  14. Shhhhhh! It's a secret! Yup ... best damn mousse EVER! A.
  15. could we do that without a car? I'm thinking of leaving the car behind in Port Angeles, seems rather expensive to bring it over for just one or two days. ← I think that would depend if Shelora were driving! I don't know what Shelora had in mind for you (well, actually I have an idea) but I think doing it sans car would be tough. Don't get me wrong about Victoria. I think it's great. But what you'll see in the Inner Harbour (downtown Victoria) features primarily touristy venues. With Shelora's guidance I'm sure you'll avoid that. At the very least you'll eat well! A.
  16. HERE is a short report on a trip I took to Smithers last year. Not a tonne to go one, but a start nonetheless. eG member Viola da Gamba lives up that way as well .. perhaps she'll check in ... A.
  17. Klary, A couple thought on your itinerary ... If I were doing the trip (which I have in bits and pieces) ... Start in Seattle/Bainbridge Island Then visit the Olympic Penninsula From there, take the ferry to Victoria / Vancouver Island A single day in Victoria is a bit of a waste IMO. If you can't spend at least a couple days there I'd give it a miss. If you do the 1-day visit, you'll see the Inner Harbour only, and that would give you the "touristy" look at Victoria only. 3 days would be best as it would allow you a trek up Island aways. Ann_T's food blog (running as we speak) will give you a good look at what you can see up that way. Or you can spend a day over on Salt Spring Island, which is an easy ferry ride from Schwartz Bay (where the ferry lands in Victoria). Leave Vancouver Island from Schwartz Bay. Active Pass is not to be missed. Visit Vancouver. I'll buy your first glass of BC Pinot. Go to the Okanagan, visiting the Fraser Valley on your way up From the Okanagan you can return via the US, visiting some of the places you mentioned in Washington. Or you can return through the Similkameen (Keremeos, etc ... fruit 'til you can't eat fruit any more!) and enter the US through Sumas (near Abbotsford in the Fraser Valley). Take your time. There's a lot of driving in that trip, and with this itinerary I tried to help save your energy for eating. A.
  18. Yeah, like she hasn't seen enough tulips in her life ... living in Holland and all. I'll focus my BC comments in the appropriate forum ... but considering the amount of area you want to cover in 3 weeks, I wouldn't chose Bellingham if it meant I was going to miss out a single day in the Okanagan or on the Olympic Penninsula for that matter. I'd just drive through the countryside to La Conner, have lunch, and the make your way up to the border. Don't get me wrong ... Bellingham is fine. Chuckanut is a great place to visit ... but considering the limited amount of time, it would be near the bottom of my list. A.
  19. Get out! You have a web site or series of web sites that focus on restaurants that cater to special dietary needs in Vancouver, Seattle, Victoria and Ontario?? You should be like Feenie and promote those web sites somehow. Maybe a food oriented on-line forum or something like that. A. PS - Like good food, Feenie rocks!
  20. Moo. I knew where you were going with this IG. No harm no foul. You make a good point about the public's unrealistic expectations however. Only time will tell if that plays out, but based on the White Spot fiasco, I'd say it's not a smart move. A.
  21. Really? Oh gosh, now I feel just silly. I'm certainly glad I never asked if Rob thought about getting his pilot's liscence so he could fly and cook at the same time. It's all marketing. But sometimes too much is not a good thing. Just ask Wolfgang Puck. A.
  22. Jeeezuz! Why'd you have to go drag Taco del Mar into the conversation? This is like saying Holt-Renfrew kick's Walmart's ass in clothing. I think it's an appropriate comparison simply because TDM one of the few places in Vancouver that sells a fish taco. i think go fish might have one as well, but i haven't tried it. ← The similarity ends with the word "taco" in the company name. But you;re right about the fish taco ... even the Red Burrito didn't do fish last I checked. Go Fish has "tacones", and they are done similar to those at the Taco Shack i.e. the fish is not deep fried. Go Fish also grills the tacos a bit more so they're crispy, and rolls them in a cone shape. These are still my fave. A.
  23. Jeeezuz! Why'd you have to go drag Taco del Mar into the conversation? This is like saying Holt-Renfrew kick's Walmart's ass in clothing. I've had more than my fair share of burritos at TDM since my kids have developed a liking for them (totally their mom's fault!). I know whereof I speak. TDM is crap. I won't insult Daved, Noah and Gerald by making the comparison. I'm with Vancouver on this. Reserving judgement after my lunch today. I really liked what I had ... and I'm pretty sure they're the best I've had in BC. But as we've established, that's not saying too much. A couple early notes however: * I agree with eatvancouver ... sauce for the fish tacos is really good. * I thought the fish in fish tacos was supposed to be battered and deep fried. The Yet-To-Be-Named-Taco-Place-On-Cornwal doesn't do it that way. It was good ... but I thought we were going for "authentic". Or maybe this gringo has it wrong? A.
  24. That's Malcolm! (aka "Magic") I used to work with him at Longliner on GI oh so many years ago. Great guy and he really knows his stuff. Good call mamacat! A.
  25. ^ Seems I'm having similar luck with Chillo's at lunch. 3 times been there at noon-ish, and 3 times not open. What are their hours ... really ... as I was unable to read the sign on their door "Settled" for bahn mi at Pho Thy. Nice back-up plan! A.
