  1. I can't believe no one has mentioned Emeril saying, "I recommend you call up your cable company and complain that you don't have SMELL-O-VISION!".
  2. I know that others might cringe at this recommendation, but seeing as the boy is turning five, I am positive that Safeway or Giant would do a Nemo-themed cake. In fact, I have seen a Nemo cake at Safeway.
  3. So, we took our first trip to Cantler's this year and were not disappointed. We ordered a dozen and a half larges (all bigger sizes were sold out at 7 pm on Sat). They came piping hot, full of sweet meat, and perfectly seasoned...yum! Ordered the hushpuppies Sara talked about...so good! In fact, we ordered another basket, but they brought fries and onion rings instead and we were too busy stuffing our faces with crab to protest. By the way, I have become a fan of their frozen drinks. I had a Fuzzy Cantler for dessert and it was a perfect way to end the meal.
  4. Hellman's mayonnaise by the spoonful. My mom used to yell at me to stop, but I kept shoveling it in.
  5. Okay, I LOVE the onion rings at Cantlers! For some reason, they are my favorite ever. Do they really have hushpuppies?? I have never noticed them on the menu and I am a huge fan of a good hushpuppy.
  6. I have had crabs twice so far this Spring...once from Bethesda Crab House, once from Steamer's. The crabs from Bethesda Crab House exceeded my expectations. Tons of meat and well-seasoned. I am going for the first time this season to Cantlers this weekend. Glad to hear your experience was good. Will report back next week...
  7. I graduated from UVA in '98 and Bodo's on the Corner was "coming soon". I went to Charlottesville last month and Bodo's on the Corner is still "coming soon". It is just bizarre if you ask me. I don't understand.
  8. OMG, it is so funny that you are wondering about "Mexican Vanilla" because every time we go in there, my husband and Max get into a debate (Max loves this) about the difference between Mexican Vanilla, Cinnamon ice cream, and "Mozambique". Mr. Sweetfreak claims he only likes Max's Cinnamon. Max claims that all three flavors are "the same" except I know that Mozambique also has nutmeg. Regardless, this is some damned good ice cream and I am glad that others agree. One more thing, we once took some friends there from Kentucky. One guy got white chocolate blueberry ice cream and declared it the best ice cream he had ever had. A couple of days later he took some of his friends back and Max remembered him. He also told him to tell call his friend (my husband) to tell him he had "Cinnamon" ice cream that day...
  9. It has been really hot and really humid in DC. That is the only reason I can come up with as to why people are practically coming to blows over Carrabba's Italian Grill.
  10. Max's on Wisconsin Ave. across from the Glover Park Whole Foods and next to Rockland's. Max makes it all right there in the store and flavors vary daily. I am a big fan of oreo cookie.
  11. It's on Wisconsin Ave., directly across the street from the McDonald's and Ruby Tuesday (in Tenleytown). Only open for lunch, not sure of the hours exactly, but I would guess 11-3.
  12. It's called AKA Frisco's...I love this place! It is only open limited hours, and I have always wondered why it gets so little attention. The sandwiches are fabulous, as are the stuffed baked potatoes. Did you get a BART?? Also, they serve "exploded baked potatoes" as a side item, which are to die for!
  13. Yes! I must admit, I am a fan of the Cold Stone. Just had it in Charleston, SC over the weekend and that Birthday Cake Remix is gooood! I wonder when it opens...
  14. Sara, I have been wanting to get some crabs too! Haven't had any this year yet, though. But I love Cantlers. If we are going to drive for crabs, we head to Cantlers. Aside from great crabs, Cantlers also has my favorite onion rings anywhere. Locally, we will go to Steamers in Bethesda. Don't like Bethesda Crab House, even though I am sure it will get votes from others. If you do go for crabs, report back about how they are.
  15. Having grown up in the area, but having gone to college south of DC, I was introduced to and fell in love with southern food...particularly ham biscuits. You know, little biscuits with a sliver of salty country ham...present at almost every southern occasion, from tailgates to weddings. Is there anywhere in the DC area where I could get some ham biscuits? I have never seen them in these parts.
  16. I think it is because Whole Foods does not carry any products containing hydrogenated fats and most crackers contain some hydrogenated fats. I hate Whole Foods cracker selection too.
  17. I went to Kinkeads last Sunday for Easter lunch. My first visit back since they renovated. I must admit that I too could not figure out what was different about the place at first. Another member of my party pointed out the new lighting and painted walls. I guess I was expecting more dramatic changes. As for the food, it was all good, but not excellent. Had a couple of fried clams which were as good as Tom says. But three of us ordered the lobster roll, and it was definitely not the best lobster roll I have ever had. There was way too much mayonnaise in the lobster salad, and I like to have my hot dog roll brushed with butter to soften it up, but this roll was toasted dry and crispy. Finally, there was a huge lettuce leaf (?!) under the lobster which cramped my style. I have to say, I was more impressed by the desserts than Tom was. They had a banana/chocolate sampler, and while I cannot describe every component, there was one chocolate souffle cake with bananas foster on top that was quite good.
