  1. Oh boy! more upscale chains!
  2. Wow Chowhound and dating advice! Who knew! I will check on the sushi, not everyone is in to that, but I agree it's lowfat and good! I truely appreciate all the great suggestions and comments that everyone has. Hopefully I will be able to make one of the upcoming "events" and meet a few of you. You have given me alot of good ideas! Hopefully there will be many more dates as I start to make my way back into the real world. I am afraid that my date will have to decide wether it is Romeo or Romero :) Cheers Scott
  3. Don as usual your sugesstions.... well ROCK. Thanks Sushi is a great idea and I have been wanting to try Spices Yes, two suggestions. First and foremost, I would bear in mind that it's Romeo, especially as Cesar Romero played the Joker in the original Batman series. As for the low-fat options: for sushi, Makoto (intimate tete-a-tete) Sushi-Ko (fun sushi bar or full restaurant upstairs) Spices (for inexpensive variety in a casual setting); for healthy-ish pizza, Two Amys (if she has kids she wants to bring); for a hip menu and restrained portions, Komi (the vegetables aren't necessary low in fat); for raw bar, Old Ebbitt Grill (historical, cavernous) Oceanaire (for a dressy business lunch) Kinkead's (for name recognition and simple grilled fish); for an impressive atmosphere, 2941 ($60 vegetarian tasting menu) Asia Nora (some good options here) Yanyu (likewise); for spicy Korean, Yee-Hwa (I haven't been, but it's the only place downtown and supposedly decent); for lots of different dishes to handle a variety of needs, Zaytinya (large, hip and bustling, middle-eastern styled tapas) Jaleo (medium-sized, loud and bustling, Spanish tapas); for genuinely healthy vegetarian, Sunflower (out in Vienna) Vegetable Garden (Chinese in Rockville). Knock 'em dead, tiger. Rocks. Edit: Damn it I just now noticed that you're looking near Arlington. Add Tachibana in McLean for Japanese, Thai Square in Arlington for casual Thai, Pho 75 in Rosslyn for casual Pho, Llajtaymanta in Falls Church for casual healthy family-run Bolivian, Secret Garden in Falls Church for Korean, Fortune in Falls Church for Cantonese, Jaleo or Oyamel in Crystal City (see above), 2941 in Falls Church (see above), Guajillo for ceviche in Rosslyn. ←
  4. I should have added that she lives near the Pentagon.
  5. Here I am going on my first date in 15 years. I know she likes to eat low fat, so I am thinking a veggie, chinese or some other place that can do veggies well. It has been a while, but I know Fortune use to be good and so is Dungrats. any other suggestions in this area. I would like some atmosphere if possible. ANy suggestions for this budding Romero?
  6. Scrapple...my wife says pig guts with hair...I say...heaven! but on learned one...who has the best scrapple around here?
  7. This is so funny... we are having a luau at work today and I am craving the same thing. I wonder if Fedx can help with a next day air from the islands?

Where do I post the receipes? What do I do with the 10 lemons I have left????? Cheers Scott
  9. I am almost ready to make my annual trek up to New bedford (actually South Dartmouth). Any great places to dine with kids and a large group? Anything from Fall River to New bedford or inbetween will work. Thanks Scott
  10. I guess collecting all the free samples as our dishes is not kosher, right? LOL In any event I am off for my 300 dollar shopping spree tomorrow ( that is generally our haul when we go) I am also getting gas ( for the car)! I think I will do a summer theme. As I understand it we are to take pics and submit recipes ( I have not done this before). Do you want pics of the shopping trip? I am also going to use fresh herbs out of the garden. Wine and beer are also available here in Virginia. Good luck all! If we combine all the purchases, costco might have there best day ever! Cheers Scott
  11. I live a 1/2 mile from Wolf Trap and can walk through the woods to get there. On a godd night I sit on my poarch and hear the music. I can also take a picnic and listen for free out in the field behind the outdoor hall. Its a nice "perk" for living in the area. We take advantage when ever Wolf trap has a free event and go to several concerts a year.
  12. I was the sole drinker in the bar at 4:45pm today. The mojito was well made, lots of bug juice :) and the cost was $6.00. THey used fresh lime and mint, and moddled the drink before adding good rum and soda. The "Happy Hour " is till 7 pm and consists a dollar off per drink, no food specials. The menu is very long, but most of the entries are $$ IMHO. The resturant was nice, with good music, tables outside and over stuffed couches in the bar area. I think I will try lunch here this week. On a really big tangent, I am sitting on my porch typing this and listening to the moody blues, who are playing at Wolf Trap tonight!
  13. I have been to Songbird the Korean BBQ place for a excellent lunch buffet several years ago. I understand that dinner is very good there (but pricey) anyone have any direct experience?
  14. This is harzardous...but I will take one for the team and stop by for a mojito and grab a menu on my way home today. Scott
  15. I think I will try a lunch there next week. Anyone want to join me? Scott
  16. I am in Northern Virginia
  17. I grew up in the bottle water business (that my father had in DC/VA/MD. My fav was a us brand called Mountain Valley Water out of hot springs AK. THe water is very clean and a mineral water. It has been in the senate and on the President's table for years. In addition, we carrried all the major Eurpeon waters out there. I liked many of them and each had unique properties and tastes. I still drink Mountain Valley as well as filtered watered. I would love to make my own sparkling water ( any ideas?). I agree that most waters are overpriced and water definitly tastes better in/out of glass bottles. Many so called naturually carbonated waters have extra carbonation added to them for shipping.
  18. This is slightly off topic... I have a nice gas outside grill. This summer I want to get a smoker. Any suggestions? FYI This whole converstaion about big butts has made me burst out laughting at work :)
  19. I noticed a new (or new to me) Cuban place on 18th Street near M Street. Anyone been there yet?
  20. I will add another vote for Da Dominio's which is right near Cylde's. I also like The Serbian Crown which is close to Tyson's. Vienna is very close as is Mclean with a few more choices. I can not remember the Indian Resturnat in Tyson's, but as I remember I had a nice lunch there a year or so ago.
  21. The haggis man is in! FYI they have wonderful frozen shrimp and my costco now roasts their own coffee beans. I also buy a lot of my cheese there especial saga blue and brie.
  22. My fav low brow The Tortilla Factory in Herndon, good, cheap and been going their for years.
  23. Alton, First thanks for "good eats" I watch three shows on a regular basis, yours, PBS America's Kitchen (Cook's Magazine) (which is starting to get stale) and A Cook's Tour. I can say that I learn more from you these days then I do from any other show. My question is Which show(s) do you watch on a regular basis and which (older) shows influenced you? I liked your idea (from another post) about classic shows on late night. Any comments on one of my al time favorites Jeff Smith AKA The Frugal Gourmet? One other small comment.... HAGGIS is GOOD! How can we get your autograph? Cheers Scott
  24. HI All! Thanks for the great sggestions! I did call Ray's the Steaks and they thought they could squeeze me in at 9:30 pm, they were very polite about it, but I thought it was a bit late. So we called the Boulevard Wood Grill, they have a "call ahead" policy that could us seats at 7:30 pm. The dinner was fantastic! I had the Halibut, my friends had the ribs and the salmon. We started with the crab, spinach and artichoke aptitizer. The wine selection by the glass was nice, and other than a over agreesive waiter plying us with drinks, the meal was great. I highly recomend this. My friends also went to Ireland's 4 courts and also enjoy themselves there. Thanks!
  25. Count me in! I am a newbee but shop in the sterling, fairfax costco all the time. Quick question if we use a portion of something, can we count that portion we use rather than the whole thing? For example a full tenderloin (which are great at costco) runs 70 dollars. Generally I use half and freeze the other half for steaks or another night. Can I count $ 35 in the spirit of things? Also anyone in the DC area that wants to come with me, I would be happy to host a outing!
