  1. I'm interested, but am out of town off and on in November, so I'll see what dates come up and hopefully can fit it in. Jan
  2. First time to post on this thread, but had a particularly good brekky this a.m., so here goes. Had some leftover parsleyed red potatoes, so sliced and sauteed in a little butter/oil until browned. Added some chopped onion, salt and pepper and continued sauteeing until onion was soft and browned. Grated on some aged gruyere cheese and covered briefly. Meanwhile, basted a large egg until the whites were just set and the yolk nice and runny. Plated the potatoes, added a tsp of white truffle oil. Placed egg atop potatoes, added more truffle oil, kosher salt and fresh ground pepper. Enjoyed along with a cup of fresh brewed assam tea with steamed milk. What a way to start the day! Jan
  3. Hmmm...I live in Ravenna and it says there's no service to this area. What areas are covered?
  4. Thanks so much! I'll have to give it a try. I've always wanted to try fried chicken and pie crust cooked in lard. Jan
  5. Abra: Would you mind giving details on where you get your pork fat and how you render it? I've been wanting to try this for a while. Thanks! Jan
  6. Was walking down NE 65th this morning and stopped to look in the window of the new World Beat Cafe. (It's on 65th between 22nd and 23rd Aves NE, where Shamiana was and before that the Santa Fe Cafe). Anyway, it's featuring quite a blend of cuisines--African, Indian, Caribbean, Cuban. Looks like it has a full bar. Will probably have to try it out soon, since it's walking distance from home. Does anyone know anything about this place? Jan
  7. Ours are at 6:30. Too bad we can't all sit together. I asked about an eGullet table when I reserved but they didn't know what I was talking about. I guess we should have organized our own Anyway, I'm really looking forward to it. I've been a fan of Pepin's for years. Jan
  8. Maybe we'd be better off holding our own Julia Tribute dinner/cooking day? I don't have a kitchen suitable for hosting it, but would be an eager participant. Jan
  9. The Julia dinner does sound interesting, esp with Thierry Rautureau cooking. Any interest in an eG table? Jan
  10. I also love saba shioyaki and am going to have to get over to Takohachi to try it out. Any other places that do it well? I've enjoyed a decent version at Toyoda in Lake City. Jan
  11. I love to do lamb shanks osso-bucco style with a lovely gremolata added at the end and served over either couscous or creamy polenta. Yummmm.... Jan
  12. Yes, and the giant prawns are also really good. Jan
  13. I think one of the best ways to sample dungeness is at one of the Chinese restaurants in the International District (ID). My favorite is Ho Ho Seafood Restaurant (predominantly Cantonese) at 653 S. Weller. They have a good-sized specials board with fresh seafood, in addition to a huge regular menu. You can have your crab any number of ways--I like ginger and green onion, but others include black bean sauce or salt and pepper. I've also heard good things on this board about the crabs at Seven Stars Pepper (1201 S. Jackson, Ste 211) which specializes in Sichuan-style food. I haven't had the crab myself, but did share a killer hot-pot there with a group of e-gulleters. These ID restaurants are very casual. I also second the recommendations above of Matt's in the Market. Hope you enjoy your visit! Jan If you go to Cafe Campagne for brunch, have the Oeufs en Meurette (foie gras sauce). Really good.
  14. Chicken and dumplings--couldn't wait for fall, made it last night....umm, comfort food! Jan
  15. Anita, sounds like a good idea. I'll be out of town for the next week or so though, but I'd love to after I get back. Do they have the good salsa bar? Also, I totally agree--the $.79 per taco is a better deal than either combo. I had a hard time finishing all 4 tacos ('cause I had them with avocado), and I also wouldn't want a 5th unless I'd wanted 5 tacos to start with. Jan (And who knows, maybe I was just really hungry the day I went, resulting in sensory miscalculation of the taco goodness. I really should try them again. )
  16. Wow, it sounds like there may a difference in pricing and quality between the Burien and Eastside locations. I think my 4-taco combo at the Burien store was $4.69 (according to my earlier post which I would insert here, but have no idea how to do) and included a large Tamarind drink. The quality of the meats was quite good and wasn't overly fatty. (the pork adobado was the best IMO). Darn, I was looking forward to the (somewhat) closer Eastside location, but I may still have to continue goin' south. They should have honored the posted price of $.79 per taco. Too bad you had such a frustrating experience. Jan
  17. Oh, that's funny! My husband and I were at that same performance. He still has the T-shirt he bought that night. Small world (or is it big eG?!) Jan
  18. Thank you, Abra for an amazing, beautiful blog. I was out of town until today, so got to read the whole thing all at once. What a treat! Jan
  19. I got my husband and I signed up for the Pepin dinner at Union Bay Cafe. I asked to be seated at the eGullet table, but the gentleman taking my reservation hadn't ever heard of eGullet. Maybe if more people sign up, they'll put us together? Jan
  20. She had a huge influence on my cooking and love of food. It feels like losing a friend, even though I never met her. She lived an amazing life and what a legacy she's left behind. On to bigger and more amazing horizons. We'll miss you terribly. Bon Appetit, Julia!
  21. I just got a res at Brasa for the Bourdain dinner! The price is $250 per couple with one cook book, or $150 per person with a cookbook included. (It looks like they're charging 50.00 for the cookbook and $100.00 for the dinner) They're seating from 6:00-9:00, but the eGullet table is at 6:30. I also put in a call on the Jacques Pepin dinner, but the person in charge wasn't there, so they took my name and number to get back to me. Not sure of the cost on that one. I'm really looking forward to this! Jan (edited to correct spelling of Mr Pepin's name--horrors!)
  22. SeaGuy has little interest in cooking, but the deal is if I cook, he'll wash dishes, and that seems almost unfair to me, because I love to cook and I hate washing up! It's worked well for 24 years so I guess we'll stick with it. Jan
  23. Yes, Yes! I love the Tacos Dorados, though I like the shredded chicken. (I'll have to try the beef next time) I also love the Coctel de Camarones...A big goblet filled with shrimp, avocado, onions and cilantro in a sweet/spicy broth..kind of like a cold shrimp soup. Jan
  24. Glad to hear you had a good meal at Zao. My one experience was so bad that I haven't had the inclination to go back. A really bad noodle soup--all I can remember is that the broth tasted like watered-down soy sauce. Maybe I'll give it another try. I also like Burrito Loco--although they have been a bit inconsistent lately. Maybe it's just at lunch...? Why can't U Village get some decent restaurants Jan
