  1. Which one ? One by Central Park ?
  2. No, I'm not a good cook and lazy on top
  3. I only vaguely remember meeting MJ when he started editing a weekly out of Kolkatta, and I was between here and here -- I'm gonna let this (Anglo Indian) go because my data is >20 yrs old
  4. I agree about Dimple - It is good for street food - a.k.a Chatpati stuff. Papri, ragda patties, chole bhature -- and If you warn the cook to hold the ghee - Mooli-ke-prathe. I'm with Steve - reservations w.r.t Indian food. You know today marks six-months since I have cooked any dinner in our apt.
  5. And pray how did you arrive at that conclusion ?? AngloIndians settled in towns were there were large canntonements or railway colonies. In WB, that would be Kharagpur. In Mumbai OfCourse because it was Mumbai In the North, Shimla and DehraDun.
  6. Yes !!!! I had them this time in .IN, this is what you'd find in many Pubjabi homes at least once a week. This is something no Indian restaurant serves; You do get these in dhabas along NH8 or Delhi-jaipur Highway as it is called.
  7. My trip to Tallin were uneventful foodwise. This was at the peak of dot-boom - Fallout of which was the hyper-inflation of everythiing to an outsider - (considered as someone who speaks English or looks non-native) Having seen what happens in the border towns of Germany,Austria (to the east-european countries that is), Tallin was a relief in terms of the hustle. I'd be extremely polite if I said I found great restaurants - Which is not to say they don't exist.
  8. What is posh food ? As in Port-off-starboard-home food ? three botts of Absinthe and you want to do this at dawn

    Bukhara Grill

I've always wondered about appropriate wines with indian food ? What are ther ? If a Chianti Reservo (sp?) is *not* on the list then I could not take it seriously After all I sometimes say hold the food, serve the Chianti -- Maybe some day I'll get enough time to write about my travels through that wine making region.
  10. Jhal and Jhol are two different things no Former if I'm not mistaken is about the thikha-factor, and later is the gravy/stew. I've had the former served in one part of the thali, and the later (just the gruel) in the second part in my dorm/hostel - While big bowls of rice and dall were on the table
  11. You reaffirm my experience of the cricket-playing islands On a serious note, the venezulians are unsure whether they want to be considered Caribbean because in Maggharita I was made explicitly aware of that distinction.
  12. Nope The irony is that many of the cooks from greater bengal (I'm being a "bhodrolok" on this ) can easily do this -- However they choose not to do so --- Suvir, I'd suggest that you post this to the NYC forum and maybe someone would post someplace we missed
  13. As summer approaches, CP comes alive during the weekend with various sounds and smells. You'll find really interesting foods around the bandshell, and above the great lawn. Another great time to find street food is the Ninth Ave Food Festival in May. As waves of new immigrant groups take to vending carts, they add one or two new dishes on the menu...... Notice now the availability of jamaican beef patties from an Egyptian vendor on 57th or halal food near JJay on 58th & 10th
  14. I have whenever I'm in town, made a trip to grab a decent lunch Much of the chaos resembled the coffee house in Cal, or Kolkatta of yonder decades. Maybe, I'll start looking for canteens in all cities where India has a major Embassy/Consulate in the future.
  15. Not having been to Cuba is a big handicap Most of the cricket playing islands have a fairly eceletic food. In DR, one needs to go off the beaten path to experience some good food as most of the beach towns have become too touristy. It is interesting to note that many islands import nearly everything from the US.
  16. While there (.IN) last month, I did not particularly notice hugh crowds outside these two establishments. There have been many fast-food type of places in BOM/DEL for decades. I remember in the late '70s Nirulas opened in my neighborhood in DEL and was instantly populated by nearby University crowd. Similar clones were to be found in many parts of South Dehi. Same was true in BOM

    Bukhara Grill

If Bukhara Grill is true to it's name, and origins, then I'd *never* order a vindaloo there. Vindaloos are goan, and I found only once ('85 on 43rd between 6th & 7th) in an indian dive-of-a-restaurant. The cook was a konkan, cooking uninspired north-indian fare. On a cold blizzardy afternoon, I asked him what he could whip up for dinner that evening. Pork Vindaloo.

    Lunch

Is this in India ? or indian meal at lunch outside india ? I'm confused  There is not much of a choice in cities outside india, except for a few big ones.
  19. What's wrong with taking junkets ? We take them all the time and then come back and write reports and Whitepapers that no-one reads or follows up. On the matters of Fusion - I prefer to stir clear of this debate
  20. Cities outside India with Indian Restaurants serving above average food: London,Toronto,Singapore,Penang,Berkeley,Berlin,NYC. These I have personal experience of. I have heard that some of the cities in the Gulf countries have a handful of places too. Really mediocre fare in Amsterdam,Vienna,Rome,Nice
  21. Pray who might that be ? For him (ex-captain) to have a son your age (whatever it is), he, had to be leading the team when I was growing up....
  22. In the older era, WB gummint used to have booze they served from their outlets that was similar to "tharra". We, and many others called it -- banglu -- Others called it 'jyoti basu's slush fund ' brew GF

    Donburi

BTW, last year my airline had a triple-miles promo for JFK-NRT that I reluctantly did not avail, since I had a 'Bond' date in Monaco [posted elsewhere in this board]

    Donburi

BON, as a "gaijen" in Ngoya, I only had katsudon (because that's what I could identify easily on the menu board). Each small place I visited on my own were so kind to me when I insisted that I had ordered exactly what I wanted Tokyo on the other hand ........
  25. Nirvana is in my neighborhood, and except for it's view; I have not found it really top notch. Having said that, sometimes its not about food I also took folks to Nirvana atop 1 Times-Sq. A well known swiss chain won the rights to run the restaurant on Victoria Peak in HKG too I'll highly recommend it for its view and not enything else..................
