  1. Burger Chef with the Burger Chef and Jeff! Rax (although there are still a few scattered around) Magic Pan for crepes - great for lunch especially
  2. I just ordered fresh cranberries from Local Harvest. They had bulk and bags - ten 8oz. bags for 27.50 plus shipping.
  3. Bumping this to remind everyone tomorrow (Friday) is the last day to participate. Donations are over $42,000 right now!
  4. Sage Infused Hand-Picked Porterhouse Steak with a Maple Mousseline Oregano Curried Fresh Kobe Tartare with a Maple Syrup Something to make me giggle on a rainy day!
  5. Wow, donations are up to over $26,000 already!
  6. They're saying now it may be a norovirus - the same thing that periodically takes out cruise ships. Link to Indy Star article
  7. She's done two Thanksgiving specials, "Thanksgiving in 60" I & II, as well as "Holiday Entertaining in 60".
  8. I have! The food is good, but a little bland to my taste. Almost everything is boil-in-bag (don't know about the desserts), and I've found the food takes a little longer to cook than the directions state. They aren't overly packaged; everything's in plastic bags - nice for a crowded freezer. My price worked out to about $15 a meal including shipping. Overall, I was favorably impressed with the food and the service.
  9. Free Bourdain - I'm doing the Happy Dance - many thanks to prasantrin for posting this!
  10. When we got married 13 years ago, we were both in our thirties and had lived on our own (separately and together) for a while. We had all the everyday stuff we could use and more. I had also inherited china from both sides of my family. So I registered for Spode Christmas Tree dishes. We use them every Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I still like them. Some of my parents' friends insisted on getting us frou-frou stuff - nice but not really wanted - and I've gradually been selling it off on eBay.
  11. I still long for a Big Chef from Burger Chef. It was a sad day when they sold out to Hardee's. There are still some Rax restaurants around, primarily in Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia. The Rax BBC was my favorite - roast beef, bacon and cheese on a bun.
  12. Alas, no Graeter's in Indianapolis! I stock up when I'm in Columbus - the stores actually sell coolers and dry ice for desperate ice cream lovers like me.
  13. As are the ones here in Indianapolis. I have stopped buying any produce there because it's lower quality than what I can get at my neighborhood grocery store. That said, I do do love TJ's cheeses, frozen foods and especially their crackers and snack foods. I keep hearing rumors that we may be getting a Whole Foods, but so far no sign of one.
  14. A Wusthof santoku knife - 7" IIRC. All-Clad stockpots and braiser. Cooking lessons, especially Chinese. A new kitchen - I have less cabinet and counter space than I did in my old (small) apartment. I'd like a gas stove in that new kitchen, too.
  15. Maggiano's (which I know is a chain) offers half-size portions of many of its entrees, and that's a big reason I both eat there and recommend it. I get tired of huge overflowing plates - I know I can get a doggy bag, but too many times it sits in the refrigerator until I throw it out.
  16. Actually, they couldn't make it work here in Central Indiana. We apparently were a test market, and they decided not to continue with the concept around here. They had remodeled the test restaurants and are now re-remodeling them to go back to a more traditional McD's setting. We do get a limited run of the McRib every year. ETA: It looks like they have retooled and pared down the concept.
  17. I've flown China Eastern from LAX to Beijing and vice versa in business class and it wasn't too bad. They have both Western and Asian selections, and the service is good. JAL in business class is good, too. I got really good service when I was one of very few passengers on the plane during the SARS scare.
  18. For Indianapolis, I'd second the suggestion of pork tenderloin sandwiches. For Grand Rapids, another Dutch speciality is saucijzenbroodjes - pigs in the blankets.
  19. Some of the good things about living in the Midwest: Fresh sweet corn from a farmer's roadside stand Homegrown tomatoes Cherries from northern Michigan

    Pop or Soda

Here in central Indiana, it's soft drink, drinking fountain (for water) and carry out.
  21. 1) Egg McMuffin 2) Hardees Hot Ham & Cheese - used to be the roast beef, but the Hardees stores around here stopped carrying them. And now into the Wayback Machine a la Sherman and Mr. Peabody 3) Burger Chef Big Chef - it was a sad day when Hardees bought BC out 4) Rax BBC - although there are still a few Rax stores, mostly in Ohio, there's none closer than 3 1/2 hours from me
  22. The best I can do are the relatively mundane (for eGullet) fried scorpion and duck feet, separately, in China. The best thing about either was the mustard served with the duck feet.
