  1. This may seem odd/gross to some but, when they were renovating an old county building I stumbled on the bathroom stall dividers. All marble in sheets approximately 6'X6'. Took away one sheet from the demo contractor for $50 and had the counter guys cut it for $20 and passed them out to friends for the holidays. Check the used building supply stores.
  2. So what are you all planting for fall/winter?
  3. ''''''''''''''''iiiiiiiiiiiiii, I'm practicing! Aside from this fun distraction, I've found it interesting that anyone would be offended by the fact that cooks pilch techniques and/or recipes from anyone else.
  4. Did i miss the notice regarding the spelling test?
  5. Here's an additional review of the pie's. http://theilladelph.blogspot.com/2009/10/pizza-oven-and-pistachio-pie-at.html
  6. They had both in our Costco, Kirkland brand that looked perfect for a chicken, and a larger Le Creuset. I liked the Kirland size since I have a larger Le Creuset, but the spousal unit gave me "the look".
  7. Where will you be relocating to? If south there were a number of dairies in Chino.
  8. I've seen their cheeses at local markets, New Frontiers Natural Market for one. They also sell at the school site. They have an animal science program, as well, with a meat market. Pretty tasty grass fed beef and pork if you're so inclined.
  9. Not actually north or south (thank God) in Cali but in San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly has a very good dairy program. They have turned out some notable cheesemakers, offer products and they offer facility tours, too. It's just nice to see where it comes from.
  10. Cafe Campagne has the best Bloody Mary's for brunch too!
  11. New wood fired pizza spot, Delancey, 1415 NW 70th Street. Guy busted his arse getting it together. Be the first to report it here!
  12. http://www.laoliveoilcomp.com/wine2009/EVOOComp/documents/2009ExtraVirginOliveOilAwardsbyCountry.pdf This is the link to the 2009 Los Angeles Extra Virgin Olive Oil competition and is the listing for award winners by country. Hopefully this will help.

    Infused Olive Oil

Try this resource: www.oliveoilsource.com The left hand column under Health and Recipes has info on infusing oils, as flavored oils.
  14. Gaspares is worth a try, for old style Italian. The one on Geary.
  15. For my used oil I deep fry some fresh ginger to leech off any residuals that can alter the taste/smell of the oil. Heard it/read it somewhere and it seems to work or I'm still stoned.
  16. I have a Vent-A-Hood 4 fan unit. Like it but, if you want to talk/entertain in the kitchen it's loud. My contractor suggested a roof mount vent, similar to a restaurant type, and in retrospect, I should have listened.
  17. Here's my Viking experience. Bought new 6 years ago a 6 burner, griddle & grill w/double convection ovens. Unit came w/a cracked manifold and leaked gas, I'll give that one to the shipper. Several manufacturin defects, incomplete spot welds, bent oven rack. Late last year I had to replace the igniter on one oven that had <150 firings. What put a burr up under my saddle was that repeated, REPEATED, communication w/Viking resulted in no response from them to address the issues. Emails and letters went unanswered. Now a local service man tells me they quit selling them because of all the "issues" with them. I can understand that. My 2 cents, look for something more reliable. Oh yea, the simmer setting blows.
  18. Looks like the first forum for Vera Pizza Napoletana will be in Seattle the last week of June. This is the group that certifies Naples style pizza in the US. Just might be interesting. www.verapizzanapoletana.org
  19. Nepenthe in Big Sur has a nice patio that overlooks the coastline. Stunning view on select days. Taco Temple in Morro Bay is a nice stop as well, unassuming building, very good food.
  20. The Thursday market is as good as ever, musical entertainment on the street, plenty of good BBQ, fresh local produce and Poly Dollies. Worth the drive over the grade. Others have mentioned, and I agree with, Artisan, Villa Creek, Bistro Laurent and Buono Tavola as eateries in Paso (I can say that because I live here). Chico's in the town square serves up some nice fresh fish, too. More than a few good wineries that I like but I'll let others jump in and suggest. ps. For SF you can use "the city" as well.
  21. So picky that the EU is compelled to mandate compliance come this July. www.forbes.com/feeds/afx/2008/09/17/afx5435360.html or www.associatedcontent.com/article/238676/italian_olive_oil_ot_always_made_in.html Any previous years oil not sold (product sitting in a warehouse) is blended with fresh oil as a routine practice in some countries. I've seen harvested olives sitting in burlap bags for days, dripping oil onto the ground before processing, because thay have sat in heat outdoors.
  22. The carbon footprint argument for olive oil may be hold water on the west coast, but not on the east, where it is about the same assuming that the oil is obtained from similarly green producers. ← Or shipped in tankers or on jumbo jets, with questionable age and ingredients. I almost agree, but then I think about the candles, dishware, linens and all that come from China. Buying from China may hold water on the west coast but the east?
  23. I've got a stake in this, so I'll join the conversation. I grow and produce extra virgin olive oil in Cali. Do this on a sustainable farm, power from photovoltaic system, drip irrigation for h2o conservation, fair wages to farm labor (meals included & cerveza after the pick), mulch all prunings into the soil, yada, yada, yada. Trying to maintain a minimal impact on the land and produce a good product that our family consumes as well as others. The "green restaurants" tout their great works but have little or no compulsion in purchasing imported olive oil leaving a carbon footprint as big as my ex-wifes a-s. Action talks, b---s--t walks!
  24. The new GQ has a top 25 listing for a slice. LA contenders are Tomato Pie and Antica in Marina Del Rey. Mozza's not on the list but lists are like..... well you know.
