  1. Checked out Cafe D'Lite on Saturday. We had the Hainan chicken rice and a (Hainan chicken) Laksa. The chicken rice was very good, and yes - well presented. I was underwhelmed with the Laksa however. The flavour was OK, and it was good and spicy, but the broth was too thin. I like a thicker, creamier broth that sticks to the noodles a bit (as well, no doubt, to my arteries). I still have Kedah House and Mui's on my list to try. Must first rush back to the Curry House at Landsdowne Mall in Richmond to recalibrate by Laksa sensor with the gold standard.
  2. whatever it is will make you want to go to Boston Pizza!
  3. Went to Hy's in Ottawa earlier this week on business. It's exactly the same - dark, conservative, very old school. But that's Hy's thing, to look like a private members' club for the expense account crowd. Steaks are good, service is good, drinks are served in proper bottom-heavy glassware, and it's dark and quiet enough to talk privately. The place aims to make you, and more importantly your guest, feel like a big-shot. And by the time you've knocked back a couple drinks, your filet mignon is served and the Bordeaux is poured, you do. Thank you, come again.
  4. In a fine dining setting, I'd opt for a quality bottled water, like San Pellegrino.
  5. Isn't hitting 3 places in one night about par for the course for you, Ling?
  6. I've been wondering about Raga for years, but never make it there, just last night I was driving past and thought how does this place stay alive. Is it worthy of being added to the must try list? What else have you had there or was it your first time? ← I'd give Raga a pass. There are many Indian restaurants in town that surpass it. We ate there about a year ago as well, and it was OK. It's still "OK" but not worth making a special trip, IMHO.
  7. I'm on another trip to Ottawa from Vancouver, though my timing could have been better with minus 25 degree weather in Ottawa, while it's 10 degrees back in Vancouver. So my dining options are limited by the radius from my hotel that my ears and face can withstand. What happened to La Gondola on Bank St? I headed there last night, with fond memories of some pretty good Italian dining, but it's gone. Replaced with another pub (I don't think Ottawa needed another one of those in the downtown core, but I guess the demand is there). Ironically, after turning around at the (former) La Gondola I headed to the Mayflower pub, where I hoisted a few pints back in the 90's. Had some good Guiness and a pretty decent Steak and Mushroom pie. Geez it's cold here! edit: the new airport in Ottawa has nice Wi-Fi access!
  8. I'd be quite happy to see this policy introduced here. I'm guessing many of these same no-shows would be the first to bitch and whine if their reserved table wasn't available on time. Inconsiderate, self-centred boors. You should have to take an etiquette course to graduate high school.
  9. Does this place have any relationship with Chi restaurant in West Hollywood, owned by Justin Timberlake? It's an east-meets-west fusion restaurant, and I hear they've really got their flavours in sync.
  10. This is outstanding advice, Chef Shogun! Where were you 20 years ago when I could have used this? Oh, still in pre-school I see....
  11. Last three: Dinner Wednesday night at Raga, on W. Broadway. The place was almost empty, at 7:00pm. I always feel a little sorry for a large restaurant that's empty and you know it's only going to get more empty as the night goes on. Had vegetable pakora as an appetizer - a little doughy and missing the dusting of salty seasoning I'm used to. Then had butter chicken and aloo gobi, both OK. I'm a big fan of butter chicken, but this instance scored a little too high on the Campbell's cream of tomato soup taste scale. Lunch Friday at Pho Thy on Victoria. I've been there many times, but this time brought along several co-workers - most of whom were pho virgins. We all got small pho's, and split a couple meat ball subs and some orders of spring rolls. Verdict from all was that it was great, and they all thanked me for taking them on such a great, thrilling adventure. That made me feel good, but I couldn't help but think they really need to get out of the office more often. Lunch today at Hon's in Richmond for dim sum. Started with some pan fried chicken pot stickers, then moved on to a chicken curry w/ rice, steamed prawn pockets and sticky rice. All good. Nobody hustles faster than the staff at Hon's. I should volunteer to work there for 45 minutes a day, in lieu of the stairmaster workouts I'm not doing.
  12. Hey, careful how you phrase that ! We would not want people to get the wrong idea about what sort of spot this is. Huggy, word is all over the street. Isn't "pepper ring" always free? It usually arrives the morning after.
  13. Good timing on your review, winegeek! I may change my initial dessert thoughts, but it's full speed ahead on the terrine and veal!
  14. Is he the one who seems like he's talking with his mouth full of food, even when he's not? Bobby Flay is definitely a major tool.
  15. Isn't there some kind of law in Canada about cooking burgers, in order to prevent E. Coli problems - like you can't even ask for one medium rare, they can only cook it well done? (I tried searching to confirm this, but couldn't find anything).
  16. I've passed that place a hundred times but never stopped. It's always scared me a bit - looks like a biker hangout. Maybe I'll try it sometime during daylight hours, or when I'm with my posse.
  17. But Bobby Rivers says there is. Are you saying Bobby Rivers is wrong? Could this be?
  18. To fully enjoy the milkshake with crepes as dessert, you must first have consumed a large Japanese meal, complete with fish nuts (i.e., soup to nuts). Stovetop, the other kids must have been jealous. Having a tick in Edmonton - at least you had something to do!
  19. Yup, it's Dolce Gelato. Their stuff is very good, but I think they're closed through the winter. They have a nice white wine gelato.
  20. You are correct , it is pumpkin but with a heavy spoon of cinnamon. Just mixing a fresh batch right now for Dine Out ← There goes Huggy Bear again, pimpin' his cinnamon girl.
  21. Down in White Rock (particularly on Marine Drive), things slow down quite a bit in winter time. Many of the "Fish & Chips" places, as well as ice cream shops, just plain close up for several months. Other restaurants may not serve lunch (or maybe no lunch Mon-Wed, say), and will try to close up earlier in the evening. This seasonality is pretty consistent and predictable, and places that survive have learned how to adapt.
  22. I saw the first episode. Not as lame as that Gilligan's Island reality show, but still pretty sad. Joan Lunden (host) must have gambling debts to work off or something. And who dreamed up the team name "crafty beavers". Geez.... At least the right person got the axe. That Tom guy was a nut case. Can't wait for the next episode.
  23. I used to live in Ottawa about 8 years ago, and travel back occasionally on business. One of my favourite places is Sante, at Rideau and Sussex. Some very interesting dishes (kind of a fusion of Asian and Carribean). Love the crab calaloo soup! Al's Steakhouse and Friday's Roast Beef House on Elgin are also regular stops for me.
  24. Prata-Man. Yeah!!! Big plate of delicious Mee Goreng for $4.95. VALUE = (TASTE) * (QUANTITY) / (PRICE)
  25. BBQ? Would that make it a hibachi kolachy?
