  1. Philly Falafel on Sansom near 18th Street. Also, the truck on 17th between Market and Chestnut is still there. Falafel cart near on JFK near 16th, and of course 20th and Market. Plenty of falafel choices in Center City.
  2. Definitely look like pork shanks. Grey Lodge just put them on the menu a few weeks back as an appetizer and they are fantastic.
  3. thanks for the recommendation. I will be near there Tuesday and will give them a try. I am a big fan of Fat Jack's beef ribs - does Sunset do beef ribs, or pork only? ← They only do pork spare ribs, but the racks are nice size.
  4. Sunset Restaurant And Barbeque, located on Route 9 in New Castle, DE. Located on Route 9 one block north of the exit for Route 9 and I-295, last exit before the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Nice roadside operation with fantastic ribs. Also serves fried fish and great sides.
  5. Grey Lodge is my favorite place for fish and chips. I also like the fish and chips at Moriarity's. The beer batter coating is real crispy and the fish and fries portions are huge.
  6. While it's not a constant on the menu, Standard Tap makes a great Creme Brulee, not soupy at all and very flavorful.
  7. Their hangar steak rocks! I love how those frites sop up that juice perfectly. I still get the smelts as an appetizer. I don't think their's a better hangar in the city. Damn! I'm starving now.
  8. Also, that Bourbon Red from Griggstown looked fantastic in the photo.
  9. Today's article in the Inqy about Thanksgiving Upgrade, good article BTW, notes that the heritage turkeys will often have a lower portion of white meat. Therefore, if you have several individuals in your group who demand nothing but white meat, definitely pick up the breast.
  10. The pound cake from Stock's Bakery are great. You can get them iced with butter cream frosting. Your choice of vanilla or chocolate. Don't forget about their great german butter cakes too.
  11. All the food carts mentioned in this thread as being open are still running in the area. If you want something truly memorable, go and grab a falafel sandwich from the cart at the northeast corner of 20th and Market. The entertainment value alone is priceless.
  12. Picked up a nice Copper King fillet at John Yi at the Reading Terminal this afternoon for $13.49 per lb. The woman at the counter packed my fillet carefully and even wrapped some ice in plastic and put it in with the fillet to keep it cold. Will grill on a cedar plank tonight with some potlatch and report.

    Oysters and Beer

Sansom Street Oyster House here in Philadelphia is kickin' for Happy Hour with A dozen blue points for $10 and a pint of either Yards Philly Pale Ale or Sly Fox Weisse. Guinness is also available to those seeking the glory days.
  14. John's at 18th and Market is still my preferred choice for breakfast. I now get my sandwiches on wheat wraps and mushroom and onion with the egg. More of an omelette than a sandwich. A truly fantastic person. My favorite lunch truck is the chinese food truck on 17th Street just south of JFK. They disappeared for a few weeks and had me worried, but they're back again pumping out good food at dirt cheap prices.
  15. The Philadelphia Craft Beer Festival held this past weekend was nothing short of a raging success. Over 50 major brewers were in attendance providing samples. The festival took place at the Cruise Terminal located in the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia. Ample parking was available at the yard, and several shuttle buses ran from the yard to the numerous parking areas as well as to the Pattisson Avenue station on the Broad Street Subway. National brewers on hand included Ommegang, Southampton, Thomas Hooker, Magic Hat, Sam Adams, Leinenkugel’s, Peroni, Southampton, Sierra Nevada, Oskar Blues from Colorado, and Brooklyn. Local brewers included Sly Fox, Flying Fish, Yards, Victory, Legacy, Stoudt’s, Lancaster, Appalachian, Dogfish Head, Nodding Head, Iron Hill, Triumph, Weyerbacher, and Troeg’s. Even Monk’s Café had their own table. The festival consisted of two sessions. The first ran from 12 noon to 4:00pm. The second session was from 6:00pm to 10pm. Don Russell (Joe Sixpack) did a lecture during the afternoon session on beer in Philadelphia. A huge line of thirsty samplers were waiting to get into the noon session. When the doors finally opened, a steady stream of people commenced and continued till around 1:30pm. 1500 tickets were available first session. The second session was even more packed. The final count for the evening session was well over 2200. The terminal’s capacity is listed at 2500. Both sessions were listed as being sold-out. Becuase I spent most of the festival as a volunteer, I was not able to sample as much as I really wanted to. What were the standouts in my mind? The biggest surprise and the most exciting: Lion Brewery out of Wilkes Barre who brought their Lionshead Lager and their Stegmaier Brewhouse Bock. To anyone who has not heard the news yet, Stegmaier Brewhouse Bock has to be some of the most fantastic beer to be had, and for a fantastic price. The bottled version of this alone is great tasting, but a sample from a fresh keg is unbelievable. Do whatever you have to get this on tap. It rocks!! Other sampling included Southampton Secret Ale which is one the most unusual beers I’ve ever tasted. Lyons’ Old Chubb, Victory Prima Pils, and Sly Fox O’Reilly’s Stout. Erie brought their great Mad Anthony’s Ale and Railbender. So much sampling and so little time. Overall, the festival was nothing short of spectacular. Nearly all the attendees were well versed in procedure and those who weren’t got up to speed very quickly. Water pitchers were emptied almost as fast as they could be filled. Except for some isolated incidents, the crowd was well-behaved and seemed to enjoy themselves. Because of the success, planning has already started for next year’s event. Volunteering for the event was pretty much a labor of love for me. It’s great to finally have an event so close to where I live and to see it succeed. I hope that this is just the start of many beer festivals to come in South Philadelphia.
  16. I picked up a six-pack of their Kolsch and found it to be really good. Light in style, but still good taste, crisp, and no taste of adjuncts. Nice beer for drinking in high heat.
  17. Hey Chris, congratulations and enjoy the show. For Philadelphia, I recommend the Grey Lodge for their food and atmosphere. Nick's Roast Beef is also recommended. For DC, I recommend Ray's the Steaks in Arlington.
  18. No, it's the Selin's Grove Brewpub located lin Selinsgrove! LOL
  19. Jake's Burgers in New Castle, DE make a fantastic chocolate malt. Great with one of their bacon-double cheeseburgers. Located one mile south of the New Castle County airport. I second the Charcoal Pit as well in North WIlmington. Also, Nifty Fifty's shakes are real good. They're located at Rt. 420 and McDade Blvd. in Folsom. Haven't been there yet, but I heard Franklin Fountain is good, but a little pricey.
  20. Just wanted to say thanks to Sandy for organizing a great trip. My first experience with Tacconelli's was awesome and I'm certain to make many more visits there. That crust is phenomenal. Can't wait for the next trip.
  21. Sad to report that Bechtel's in Lewisburg went out of business. They couldn't afford the money to modernize the dairy in order to compete in the marketplace. Sad too because they had really good food and ice cream. The place will be sorely missed.
  22. Classic northeast tomato pie. Wafer-thin crust with cheese and topped with an excellent tomato sauce.
  23. I'm up for either Saturday or Sunday. Also, see if anyone is interested in adding Tony's Place at 6300 Frankford Ave. And just because it's a half block from the Grey Lodge has nothing to do with this request.
  24. The Fence Drive-In, located on Rt. 405 3 miles south of Lewisburg. Last of the true drive-in restaurants where the servers walk up to your car and serve you. Burgers, fried chicken, and fish sandwiches. Excellent food. In Danville, BJs make good ribs, and Danville Sub Shop makes the best hoagies and cosmos (a baked hoagie). Stop at the Bullfrog in Williamsport for great suds and food. Make the trip to Selin's Grove for more great food and suds. If you go about 9 miles south of Penn State in Port Matilda is some excellent roadside BBQ. Enjoy your trip!
