  1. Maybe, but you could find more "exotic" stuff at Plantation... Mourelatos is lacking in variety. They didn't even have endives the other day!!
  2. I work downtown and was used to doing my groceries at the Faubourg when they had EVERYTHING. So I went a couple of times to the new PA and it's fantastic. I got some great deals on very fresh produce (grape tomatoes for 99¢/pint, $1.99 for a huge bunch of asparagus) but the greatest deals are at the cheese and fish counters. I loaded up on fresh fish and seafood and big chunks of Chaumes and pepper Brie (yummy) for a fraction of what I would pay elsewhere. It has become my new favorite grocery stop!
  3. So I went to the opening last night... they really wanted to start with a bang, let me tell you. The lobby reception was a Moet-oysters-sushi affair and the party on the third floor was catered by Buena Notte, Rosalie & Globe. About a dozen rooms were open, some to visit, some with food themes, according to the catering restaurant (i.e. parmesan-prosciutto room for Buena, "fast-food" style for Rosalie — smoked salmon pogos, tartare mini burgers). The food was in abundance, so was the wine and martinis. Music was great old school stuff but I'm still not getting some of the "entertainment": a sumo wrestler, Elmo (!), a couple of tam-tam chicks and some acrobatic angels (not to mention the 5 santas in the lobby). Stick to one theme next time guys! We left early as it was getting waaaaayyyy too crowded in there. Must be getting old
  4. The food was terrific... oysters, foie gras, bison, chocolate soufflé (been eating carrot sticks since then...) with great wines. The only downside was the attitude of one of the waitresses (we had many peope serving us that night, as the place was really busy). First she made a fellow staff member wrong in front of us, then came out to "challenge" my fiancé when his dish ended up not being what he ordered, telling him HE made the mistake! After a quick chat with the maître-d' about our lack of satisfaction with the service, we were offered a nice bottle of dessert wine, which was a nice way to deal with this. But the rest of the staff was very pleasant and helpful and we ended up leaving the place very satisfied with our evening. I would definitely recommand it!
  5. Going there tomorrow as well for the official opening party. I will try to find out more but when I visited the place a couple of weeks ago (still looking for the perfect wedding cocktail party spot!), I heard the restaurant will open only next spring. Keep you all posted!
  6. Going to Aix for the first time this weekend... any suggestions on what to eat there? Any comments on your experience there would be appreciated too. thx
  7. Yeah sure... if you can get a reservation... they are soooooo booked since that enRoute feature!
  8. Hi everyone, it's me again... back here after a few visits to different spots for my wedding reception. Still love Bice but the reception room at Hotel St-Paul is just PERFECT... and since I've heard mixed reviews about Cube (never dined there myself because of that), I would like to get your honest feedback, esp. if you've attended a cocktail party/reception there (that's the format we'd like to do for our own reception). Thanks!
  9. Just went to check out Bice (I work 2 blocks from the place) and I'm quite impressed with the upstairs rooms. It fits exactly with what we're looking for: intimate, elegant and conveniently located! Tony - great guy - gave me a sample menu and the food looks fantastic too. I'll continue looking but my heart is already set on it... now let's see if my better half thinks the same way Thanks everyone for your help!
  10. Thank you for you reply! Our budget for the whole wedding + honeymoon is $20,000. Now since I'm new at this, I checked out some websites and they suggest putting 40% of your total budget towards food & booze (including rental fees) so that means about $8,000 in our case. Now we don't know the exact amount of people yet but it should be around 50, so it comes out to $160/pers. I'm pretty sure we can come up with something pretty good for that amount! Our first idea was to make it a wedding cocktail party instead of a sit-down formal dinner, because we'll be a small group. We also thought it would be more fun since it allows people to mingle and sample tons of delicious hors-d'oeuvres (I looooove hors-d'oeuvres!) I saw the Lion d'or on the web, I'll go check it out as well!
  11. Hello, Just recently got engaged and I've started to look around for a great spot to host our wedding reception. Since a St-Leonard hall is not my style and because there will be in between 50 and 60 guests only, I was thinking of doing it in a restaurant. So I'm looking for suggestions of restaurants that have great food and setting and that would be willing to rent out the whole place on a Saturday night! Thanks for your help!
  12. I'm throwing a Jamaican-themed party this weekend and am looking for a Jamaican restaurant that makes good patties (won't have time to make some from scratch!) Thx
  13. There's also an B&M that opened a few months ago on Sherbrooke & Melrose. I hear they make a decent pizza but haven't been there for breakfast yet.
  14. Well... went back to Oxford dinner last weekend and had their eggs benedict. The sauce tasted floury, which leads me to believe they don't use a true hollandaise... better stick to their regular egg plates. The home fries and baked beans rocked though!
  15. New on the site... been living in NDG for 5 years now and been going to the same place for breakfast: Oxford Diner (Sherbrooke, corner Oxford) Great home fries, cheap prices... nice terrasse in the summer. Service is sometimes slow but worth the wait... Beware of the owner: she's can sometimes be a "breakfast-nazy" (I've actually seen her throw some customers out a few times) but she's alright when you follow her rules Anybody else go there for a hangover cure?
