  1. think i've mentioned this before, but the dove at dargate - a five minute drive from whitstable - is pretty damn fine. m
  2. o deepest joy. they are sinfully gorgeous. alternatively - o bugger. there goes my atkins ...
  3. thanks, bapi. couldn't believe price of foie gras at ma cuisine either! and it was a big old dod, too. fleur i found a bit uninteresting. can't imagine a reason to ever go back. so it's a result for the wee guy in the suburbs. m
  4. probably peapods at £3 a pop. (see threads passim...)
  5. glad you liked it! m
  6. rebato's is pretty good. old-fashioned but fun. and for portuguese, the best on the little portugal strip is, i reckon, bar estrela. both south lambeth road. el rincon latino, clapham manor st, is great for a raucous night. really sweet staff. m
  7. Abso-bloody-lutely not Paul do i detect a man who takes his scones very seriously indeed? m
  8. jam first, for the simple reason that it's easier to spread jam on scone than jam on cream. then you can really pile on the cream mmmmmmmm. m
  9. mercifully, the magnificent mermaid is still alive and kicking. it was the rather inferior blue dolphin that copped it. m
  10. never been known to put pen to paper, unless being given the barman's phonenumber m
  11. really glad you liked it charlene. (phew). m
  12. liked south. rustic french behaviour at reasonable prices. but empty when we visited. m
  13. glad to see you're coming to your senses m
  14. terry durack loved it. someone called joe joseph (instead of giles coren) loved it. but it must be crap because simon says . m
  15. walked past on saturday. seems to have closed down (sign saying lease for sale on window was a bit of a giveaway). m
  16. cigala and the perseverance, both excellent and reasonably priced, should be within staggering distance for you (lamb's conduit st). m
  17. sorry, remiss of me. 148 holland park avenue (used to be a couple of other short-lived places, one a mauritian, i think) tel: 7221 6090 two courses: £16.50 three: £19.50 four (our greedy option): £22.50 i can also recommend the spiced roasted pineapple with ginger ice-cream! m
  18. there's a very reasonable set menu which my date had and actually liked more than my a la carte (excellent organic chicken/summer veg assembly). stunning lime ice and dense chocolate mousse, and i don't much like puddings. and yes, sorry, you have to pay to see me on thisislondon. but it's only about £3 a month. and i'm worth it alternatively, you can just pick up the paper for free! m
  19. went to edera - new place from a to z lot (zafferano, aubergine, timo etc) - last night. pretty bloody fabulous. nice place, already really busy; not over-decorated; brilliant, helpful, knowledgeable staff; and quite excellent, rather adventurous (lobster bruschetta with melon jelly) scoff. brilliant pan-fried veal sweetbread with toasty, buttery roast gnocchi, marsala and little shavings of black truffle. and a clever pork fillet dish with balsamic sauce and a little savoury apple strudel. i liked. m (although simon will probably hate it ... )
  20. i liked it a lot. though - and you don't often hear this from me - the portions could've been smaller ... the sweetbreads had the potential to be great. m
  21. there's a really good, newish, rough and readyish 'gastropub' called the easton on, uh, easton st, just across rosebery ave from exmouth market. lots of good-looking young thangs and an interesting 'australian' menu which we didn't sample but smelled marvellous (mmm, barbecue ...) m
  22. i have. i thought it was quite a sweet little place, trying really hard but not really cutting it on the food front. a bit of a labour of love. but then i did have a christmas dinner (with all the trimmings ...) so it's probably my own fault. for my money, the best restaurant in the area is thailand on lewisham way. despite looking like a bombsite, it's dishing up some fabulous - and quite unusual - thai food. there was a beef dish called something like bole lope (this is rubbish, but it's close) which was chargrilled with pepper leaves and completely fabulous. m
  23. lovely, thank you. twinkly and fizzy and exciting. m
  24. don't know, don't do arrondissements. but it was about a 10 minute walk from the galleries lafayette. m
