  1. How could I have forgotten? Dominic's When it was still Dominic's. I loved that place.
  2. The original American Cafe opened in Georgetown just before I moved from the suburbs to DC to attend (if that's not too strong a statement) GWU. Over the years, the scattered a few more around town -- the Hill location mentioned earlier, and uptown -- so your location may indeed have been new when you discovered it. I don't think that the Hill location opened before the early '80's. Can't remember much further than that. Anyone remember the sushi bar that was in the same shopping strip as Joe's Noodle House? My earliest memories of sushi are there. I can't remember the name
  3. is that the ice cream shop off of wisconsin in bethesda? we used to switch between there and the one in glover park - steve's?? long gone i bet - i never remember where it was... Yep, that's the one. I'm pretty sure that Steve's is gone. It may be Max's now, I'll have to check. Is Steve's the one that did the blend ins? They had a store in Georgetown on Wisconsin.
  4. I picked up a couple of packages at Giant today. This was the third or fourth place I looked before I found them. I happen to have an open bag of Valentine's Day colored lying around the house so I took a few pics. Here are the black and white M&M's in a red bowl Here are the Valentine's Day colored in a black bowl And here they are side by side
  5. I LOVED the American cafe!!! There was one on the NE side of the Hill. The service was terrible but the food was great. Which makes me think of Bob's Famous. I know they are still around in Bethesda, but at least a decade has passed since they closed on the Hill. You never knew who you would see buying an ice cream cone. Not to mention the first boy I ever had a crush on, I must have been 8 or 9, worked behind the counter. I don't like ice cream, but I ate a lot of it that summer.
  6. For me it was the pita pan. It was the avocados and dressing that got me. I loved that thing. How great was the glass covered porch? I know have a craving for cinnamon coffee
  7. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. Has the trend in individualized packaging made life any easier for those who plan/prepare the meals?
  8. You'll be pleased to know that Nasa now offers 7 types of Tang. Tang still travels into outer space Do you stick with the traditional orange or have you expanded your horizons?
  9. What are some of the common requests? What changes have you seen in the eating habits of those lucky enough to go into space?
  10. Clams baked in tomato garlic sauce......so easy and so impressive! Preheat oven to 450. Put clams, pureed tomatos, and as much garlic as you desire in to an ovenproof dish. Bake until clams are open, about 15 minutes. yummmmmmm
  11. Booeymonger's on Wisc. Ave. has always been popular with high schoolers. Way back when or at least a decade ago, we always started a night out with a cup of cinnamon coffee. My intern who is a senior tells me they still do the same thing.
  12. Nicely done Pan
  13. Cheese, sauce, dough strawberries, chocolate, whipped cream
  14. I have a friend who cannot stand cooked fish but is slowly learning to love sushi. We eased her into it, starting with tuna. One great thing about sushi is that the fishy smell isn't a problem. ( Unless you smell it, and then it's a problem!) Let me know if you need sushi recommendations! They are my specialty
  15. I love it! We have our own group therapy sessions. Vent away....
  16. I have an appointment today right near Twinbrook and Boiling brook (I think). Is there any good takeout around there? I'll try almost anything. The cheaper the better.
  17. I want to eat spaghetti with tomato sauce that does not splatter and Corn on the cob that does not get into your teeth
  18. Oh wow. I can't even imagine. Does anyone know why it needs to be refridgerated? I left my out overnight and didn't know whether to finish it or not.
  19. The Hill has not been the same since Sherill's closed. Or the Ice Cream Lobby for that matter. Mel's. I miss Mel's huge bowl of chicken soup. And the Matzoh Balls. And all the people who where famous but only in DC. And Mel.
  20. Bah, that takes a lot of romance out of it! I suppose they don't really use those "space pens" that write upside-down either. There go my childhood memories.....
  21. In her blog JennyUptown asked people to share their food memories. I had the same idea during my blog, but forgot to get around to it. Here is me getting around to it! I love corn beef. Yes I know I spelled it wrong, that is just how I think it's spelled. Jewish rye, deli mustard and as much meat as the bread could hold. Grandma always brought down a couple of pounds when she came to visit. (She brought a ton of food, but that's a whole other thread.) One year on visitors day at sleep away camp, when I was about 11, she brought me a pound of corn beef. That night after my family left I walked around camp eating corn beef, slice by slice. Normally we were supposed to turn in whatever food was left, but for some reason they didn't take my corn beef. A few years later, when I was a CIT, I asked one of the counselors why I had gotten away with breaking the most important rule. (The story was a bit infamous by then) She replied that the head counselor told everyone to leave me alone because she had never seen anyone enjoy cornbeef that much. Now, when I eat corn beef, I think of my Grandma and how one of my favorite people brought my favorite food to my favorite place. Edited to add Jenny's quote. I forgot it! Sorry.
  22. I too am on medication which means I can't drink. My illness is chronic, so I go on and off medication, and have done so for almost a decade. Yes, sometimes you get strange reactions in restaurants when you decline alcohol. I base my tip on the reaction. If I am treated respectfully I tip accordingly. If not, I tip lower and on my way out I ask to see the manager.
  23. Thanks so much. I'll write up the recipe and post it If only I could grow my own basil Unfortunately, I live in an efficency on Connecticut Ave, which is a major road. The only thing I hate about my apartment is that I have no backyard. Well, I'm off to vote. Here's to taxation without representation!
  24. And you were worried this would be dull! I think not. You eat as I would if I had the budget. Eat on, eat on. Some of us are living vicariously through you. We are in for a treat. Jenny is hitting the good ones this week! If only there were pics!!!!!
