  1. The prune paczki I just ate downstairs, by myself, in about 2 minutes flat.

I have never like packzi previously. Must be this pregnancy thing.

Prune paczki cravings? Sounds good to me, Danielle! Big hug to Dylan, big sis in waiting

I don't know why, but lately most delicious for me have been on the sweet side. (I should get out more  )

These are some Dutch ananas taartjes that my neighbor made and brought over on my return. They're little buttery, tender melt-in-your-mouth shortbread cookies filled with spiced pineapple jam.

  2. If it is "lowh po bang" then it means "wife biscuit". It is not really a biscuit, more like a round disk of winter melon paste wrapped with some flaky pastry. They are so good hot out of the oven..... It is not to be given during weddings, it got its

Oooh, my mother used to get these all the time when we were little. They had other fillings, too - red & black beans. Flaky pastry with a red characters stamped on the top. I tried "Googling" for a recipe but couldn't find one, does anyone have a good recipe?

  3. Well, let's see. Last year for fun, we celebrate a Robbie Burns/Chinese New Year.  We dined on Chinese food and each got up to read a Robbie Burns poem. I copied a sampling of poems so everyone could read it in an old english voice. It was fun!!

To put a spin on this, depending on if the restaurant allows it or maybe they have one in the back. Bring in a karoake machine with a monitor so the table guests can sing along. You could spin the bottle(bottle of soya sauce), the person chosen has to belt out a song for their dinner.

That sounds like lots of fun! There's no time limit at Mark's, is there, Gastro?

  4. Gastro, you have to post the pic.

Yetty found the unflattering pic of me here just because I'm a sucker for the gratitutious action shot.

You gotta give me a reason to visit DC.  Thus far, I've visited Egulleteers in San Francisco and NYC.  :raz:

Ai ya!  Typical Asian male response.  Always gotta see a picture first.  Do you want to see me mending socks or doing embroidery?

NOW I saw the picture of you.  I thought spaghetttti was joking with the picture of the black chicken.  Dude, where's your "fai gee"?

The menu's STILL not done yet - sigh.  @#$!  Ai ya....

Oh, show the boy a pic. Now tell me your respective astrological signs. Bolts of silk, suckling pigs, whatever. But a bit of tea money works well too.

Heheh, Ben - I love this!!! :wub:Herb, please accept my sincere apologies. (I still think you're cute). Perhaps this one is better. Gastro, please be patient, all good things come to those who wait. (It's the last photo, after all those pizza shots  )

Ahem, Gastro -- do like Uncle Ben says.

  5. ...With apologies to the fans of salat out there, I can only describe the taste as cheddar that's been aged for many months somewhere warm and damp... say... in a wrestler's armpit....

    "

David, more for the rest of them! The best salak we get here are from Bali, they're little and not as tart. Beware though, I've heard that they have certain medicinal qualities, so if one is besieged with Montezuma's, er, Mahathir's revenge, it'll cure what ails ya.

I've posted this elsethread, but do you have these rose apples (jambu mawar) in Malaysia? I fell in love with how fragrant and sweet they are. These came off my mom's tree, and we'll have to wait another 3 weeks or so for more fruit.

gingerly, we have them here in Indonesia, too!

  6. Yetti,

I just checked out the recipe for the chicken and rice wrapped in banana leaves:   Lemper Ayam.  What is Trassi?  As I won't be able to get any here in Brandon, is it crucial for the taste? Is there anything I can use as a substitue?

    Most respected Dejah,

If I'm not mistaken trassi/terasi/belacan is similar to haum ha. We had a little discussion about it in your Bi-racial Partnerships thread.

Trassi is the crumbly brown stuff:

  7. Fabulous looking dinners everyone! Judith, your roast has mesmerized me! Lovely that.

CindyG111, welcome to the Dinner! thread, Your dinner looks awesome.

Ciao, calimero - outstanding was always!

    I sorta had a breakfast/dinner:

Sunny-side up egg sprinkled with Soul Food seasoning, sage-y chicken sausage (so good) and rice.
