  1. I've made beef brisket with Coke or Pepsi before (along with ketchup, onions, celery, and tomatoes). It's almost always turned out well.
  2. Amazon is currently selling one of the 6.75 quart ovens for $130 ($155 plus $25 off any kitchen purchase over $125). What is the likelihood that I will be able to find this particular item for less at one of the outlet stores?
  3. I stopped by the Italian Store yesterday on the way back from a meeting in DC. Got the Capri with extra hot peppers. Holy crap was it good. Most hoagies I've had in the past were Blandy McBland but this was just packed with freshness and flavor. I also got a whole cheese pizza for some co-workers. Not that impressed, especially since I recently had some wonderful artisanal pies up in NYC. The crust was soggy and the cheese didn't taste milky enough. No worries, more reason to stick with the sandwiches next time!
  4. I had a wonderful vanilla-glazed with raspberry jelly recently. The Valrhona hot chocolate at Doughnut Plant also rocks -- it could be diluted by 50 percent and still taste good.
  5. Anyone know if the Grill is open today? If so, how early? Thanks.
  6. I thought their pizzas were so-so as well but the buffalo mozzarella? Oh my. As good as any I've tasted. The nutella-filled doughnuts would have been great if they were straight out of the fryer instead of lukewarm. Oh well. I may try them again someday.
  7. Holy crap, was everyone at Palena last night? We had no service problems, though I'm generally less picky than most. We tried the burger, chicken, fries (those dauphinoise thingies are crack-in-a-potato!) and swordfish. All as good, if not better than advertised. Finished off the meal with the cashew dacquoise, which was so-so until you mixed it with the chocolate sorbet. Lovely. Can't wait to go back.
  8. Anyone else having trouble accessing the website? I have been getting nothing but a blank screen. Would like to know what they're serving for dessert these days.
  9. Our group will probably be somewhere between 10 and 15 people. Poste's website says their bar area seats 30, I couldn't find any information for the other places.
  10. Heh, I ate there a few weeks ago and had the exact same thing. Great stuff. The shrimp and grits are straightforward but still very good too.
  11. Do places like Cafe Atlantico and Andale have separate bar areas? We're gonna be a big group, probably ordering drinks only (having stuffed ourselves at Zaytinya already), and plan to lounge around for at least a couple of hours, so the folks in charge probably wouldn't be as receptive to us -- correct me if I'm wrong.
  12. So my 30th is coming up very soon, and about 10-12 of us will be meeting up this Saturday for dinner and possibly more for drinks afterwards. In terms of where to eat, I'm thinking Zaytinya too. Not in love with the food (only been there once), but my guess is that it will be less packed than Jaleo. At what time should we show up? Much as I'd love to make reservations, 6:30 is simply too early. Is the wait gonna be shortest at 7:00, 7:30, or 8:00? That said, if the wait at Jaleo isn't gonna be longer, I'd rather go there instead. As for after-dinner drinks, I'm looking for a place where we can lounge at a table and chill for the evening with good cocktails. No music/DJ necessary. I read the Penn Quarter ladies night out thread, and got the impression that Poste was most promising? Advice/recommendations appreciated. Thanks.

    California Sauv Blanc

I was in California recently and had an excellent 2001 Sauvignon Blanc from Westerly, which I'm told is in the Santa Ynez Valley. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that I will find it out here in DC, since Westerly is apparently a small winery. Anyone have recommendations on something similar that's more widely available? Thanks in advance.
  14. What dishes did you order, newsbabe? Inquiring minds want to know.
  15. I'm having dinner here with my parents next week, but am somewhat worried given that most the reviews I've found on the net (there don't seem to be many on this board) have been lukewarm at best -- mostly along the lines of "food was decent, but way overpriced." That said, which items on the menu are the most promising or worthy of their prices? I'm heard good things about the foie-gras shumai but after having had the spectacular foie-gras soup dumplings at Annisa in NYC recently, my standards may be a bit unreasonable. Basically, I'm afraid that my parents are gonna leave disappointed -- they've been wanting to eat here for years now.
  16. I'm taking a new hire to lunch on the firm's penny at some point next week. Logistically, the Georgetown/West End restaurants are probably the most viable options. I've already eaten at Citronelle, Melrose, and Kinkead's. Marcel's, Nectar, and 1789 don't appear to be open for lunch. Two other potential options are Mendocino and Sea Catch. The reviews of Mendocino on this board seem to be mixed, and I couldn't find much on Sea Catch. Are those the only promising choices available? Any other ideas?
  17. I recently caught an episode of America's Best Chefs where Alain Ducasse made a pasta dish by cooking some dried pasta in a pan, then gradually adding stock and stirring as one would do with risotto. This technique seems awfully intriguing to me. Unfortunately, the show was vague about details (cooking time, amount of stock added). Anyone have tips on what types of pasta would work best, and how much stock should be ladled in each time? Better yet, any recipes would be greatly appreciated.
  18. Where is the news about a Langley Park location? Pollo Campero's website seems to suggest that they aren't offering franchising opportunities in MD. I'd love to be wrong, though.
  19. Does Kotobuki accept credit cards or is it cash only? I couldn't tell from the review.
  20. If the In-N-Out fries are too limp for your tastes, it's always possible to order them "well-done" (BTW, I've never understood the hype about Five Guys -- the burgers are fine but hardly spectacular).
  21. I am visiting from out of town for Saturday only and have reservations for dinner here. Which of the four menus should I order from, and why? Any other tips I should follow? The pickings are slim in DC, so I'm really looking forward to a great meal.
  22. I dunno if Cafe Deluxe still serves the roasted lamb and goat cheese on sourdough, but it is soooo good. Plus, their fries (unlike most places) are actually crispy. I'm also a big fan of their salad with goat cheese and pine nuts. The place is certainly a safe, though unadventurous, pick.

    Aquavit

Is the $45 all-you-can-eat brunch the only option available on Sundays? I couldn't find a menu on their website.
