  1. I like Honest Tea as well.

There's a delicious bottled green tea that I've had a few times, but I can't remember the name off the top of my head. I'll have to check next time I'm at the store. Totally unsweetened and a nice earthy flavor.

Does anyone dislike sweetened tea as much as I do? I don't think I'd survive in the south, do they ever serve unsweetened tea down there?

  2. Ask for the wine list and the response is "we have chardonnay and mer-lott".

Diner: Could I see your wine list?

Waiter: Oh - we have both types - Red and White

    :laugh::laugh::laugh:

Even better is "we have all three kinds -- red, white and pink".

didn't your sig formerly say "fuckin' idiots"?

think i liked it better like that.

and that red, white, pink response is a hoot.

Nope. I would never use such vulgar fuckin language. Sheesh. :raz:

  3. Yeah--if you can believe it, it was at the little bitty store on the NW corner of 104th and Broadway!

I also saw the ginger altoids at the Duane Reade a couple of blocks down from there.

    K

Hmmm. I'm gonna be all over the Duane Reade when I get outta work.

  4. Yes. Between the Ginger Altoids and the Tangerine Sours (SOUR! ), I've found my stocking stuffers for the nieces and nephews this year...that is, if I don't eat them all myself.

    K

K, where did you find them? In the city?

  5. I just sent an email to my brother (who works for Nabisco) indicating that a few hundred tins of these puppies would make a nice Christmas gift.

I'm hopeful. When I was in college and told him I liked Easy Cheese (in the squirty cans) he hooked me up with an entire case. I was the most popular girl in the dorm when word got out that I had such a supply of the stuff.

  6. i've yet to see these elusive confections.

after having heard of them and keeping an eye out for the last 6 months.

I spotted them at World Market when I was in Ohio during Thanksgiving. If I don't see them here in NYC, I'm having mom ship me a box.

  7. I just talked with Annie at Blue Smoke, to alert her to our coming. (A group over 10 is considered "large" and is expected to make advance arrangements.) She will get back to me with info. For the record, regular a la carte price of the burger is $10.95, plus $1 for cheese, $1 for bacon.

Add some fries, a couple of brewskis, tax and tip, and you're at about $33-$35.

    Damn, I'm glad I don't drink! Saves me a few $$.

    you don't drink?

we'll teach you yet, young wanker.

Not drinking is a relatively new concept for me (hell, I'm Irish & German).

First of all, I hate beer. Hate it. It's downright vile. And I only have a taste for red wine when I'm having certain foods, so I'm usually relegated to the liquor category. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I don't like anything particularly sweet so that rules out most mixed drinks. I don't like whiskey, so there goes that. I generally order gin & tonic. I REALLY like gin & tonic. and I REALLY like limes. I can't have just ONE gin & tonic. I can't afford to have as many gin & tonics as I usually end up ordering (little buggers are 'spensive in the city). So not only do I get a bit too tipsy, but I also wind up broke.

So I've decided to stick to ginger ale (with the limes of course) for a year and see how that goes. Mostly just to see if I can do it. Although if you're convinced you could get me to knowingly consume alcohol, I'm willing to start taking bets. :hmmm:

  9. Ugh.

Out of curiosity, I stopped at a McCafe in Sicily a couple of years ago. Tried a capuccino or something and it was atrocious. I think I managed to choke down 2 sips before dumping it.

    What's next, a McD's sushi bar?

  10. Why do you feel that employees of restaurants would not be in favor of this?

I don't have a high horse on this one, but the simple answer is that restaurant employees like money, and this would remove some of that.

How? Are the restaurants selling cigarettes?

It's not like smokers are going to stop going out as a result of the ban. Look at NYC. You can't smoke ANYWHERE -- restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. (except for outside), and places are still packed to the hilt.

  11. There is a hearing this Wednesday, December 3rd at the City Council at 10 AM.

Two smoking ban proponents, Breathe (a non profit group made up of bar/restaurant employees against tobacco), and Smoke Free DC, will be in attendance. Apparently there are quite a few ban proponents on the list to attend, and not many who oppose it.

I don't smoke, but I can't imagine many people employed in restaurants who would be in favor of this. I certainly am opposed to it. I have no facts to support this but it seems to me that attendance at this hearing has been stacked in favor of these two organizations. I do know for a fact that the RAMW (Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington) does oppose such a ban, and is currently trying to organize support for Wednesday's hearing.

Apparently the ban in Montgomery County is causing multiple places a month to close their doors. I would guess ditto in NYC, but without hard facts I will not elaborate.

I see this ban spelling instant death for many places, especially the BDC.

    What's the consensus in e-gulletlandia?

Why do you feel that employees of restaurants would not be in favor of this?

I don't know of any businesses in NYC which have closed as a result of the smoking ban. I know that I, for one, go out a LOT more often now that I can do so without going home reeking of smoke.

  12. I enjoy both.

I like the smell of my Cafe du Monde (with a dash of cinnamon added to the grounds) brewing away in the morning and my Vanilla Almond tea steeping away at my desk as soon as I sit down in the mornings.

My day gets all outta whack if I can't have both.

  13. Saturday 12/13 1:00 at Blue Smoke.

I know some of you have responded here and some have probably PM'd your RSVP to Elyse or Suzanne, but I'm just curious as to what the headcount is so far. Who's coming?

  14. I like for there to be so much meat and sauce that you a) have to eat it with a fork, or at least, b) have to eat what falls out with a fork.

Sadly, there was no slop in this sloppy joe.

Maybe that's why they call it a BBQ sandwich -- without slop, it simply doesn't qualify as a Sloppy Joe.

  15. Ooops. Didn't mention a time for Blue Smoke on 12/13. Since it's Saturday, and there's no eclipse, shall we revert to 1:00pm?

I wonder if we end up with a large group, they'll put us downstairs in the Jazz Standard space? That's where I'm used to eating their burger, anyway. Anyway, I'll check with them after the holiday. So far, the RSVPs are:

    elyse

Suzanne F and HeWho (as someone called him last night)

    alacarte

    MHesse

    Picaman

    Kirk

Keep those RSVPs coming, here or by pm.

Me! I'll be there, and I'll bring a friend or two.

  16. i don't think, in the long run, new york needs anyone's couple of thousand dollars every couple of years. if you chose to stay away from the greatest city in the world because you can't have a cigarette with your drink, well then we NY'rs might just be better off.

    Amen.

I love sidewalk cafes. And regarding the smoke factor, at least if I'm going to have to sit next to smokers, their smoke will waft away much better outdoors.
