Who knew? I'll be in Reading for Thanksgiving with the in-laws. I promise to try this in as many permutations as my post-turkey stomach can stomach, and report back. Jamie
  5. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but it looks like if you order through the website you get 2 bags and free coffee for $14.95. If you call 877-628-5491 (the number in the TV commercial that you can watch from the main page) you get 3 bags and coffee for the same price. The commercial says in true direct response TV fashion that "you must order in the next 15 minutes" but I'm pretty sure that the folks at the call center aren't sitting there with stopwatches Haven't tried it, but it might be worth calling the number to find out. Oh, now I get it. Unfortunately, I didn't understand the process until after my one suggestion had been dealt with. I'm a bit airheaded sometimes, but I'm told that's one of my charms. Jamie
  7. Can someone tell me if the bar got raised? It was just there, and now I can't see it. Jamie

Here are the suggestions so far: Smith & Wollensky's Cafe Luxemburg Tavern on Jane Chumley's Blue Smoke Mchale's Luger's White Manna (NJ) Landmark Tavern Burger Joint PJ Clarke's Fairway's Old Town Bar Corner Bistro Judson Grill Mc Sorley's Island Burger Parker Meridian Jackson Hole Now: Veselka Blue9 Friar's Coffee Shop That other place Piper's Kilt You know, I really have no idea. Landmark is my favorite of the ones I' have tried, and are listed, but they don't serve past a certain time. UPDATE! Landmark will serve burgers at night, until they close or run out, AT the bar. I will have to call back tomorrow to speak to someone who can confirm this. NOW, in case this does not work out... will someone (JosephB?) check on a few good bets? Meaning availability at 7pm (of burgers and space), seriousness of the recomendations ( we really don't want a flop for our special guest), affordability (might be different at night), ummm... I can't think of anything else. I personally am interested in Landmark, Blue Smoke, Blue 9 (?), Smith and Wollenski's.... Or do we want a hole? Please add Piper's Kilt to the official list. Jamie
  9. All he wanted was a Pepsi! Just a Pepsi! And she wouldn't give it to him! Made my day. Jamie
  10. Thank You. the number of egullet members who like burnt bread is currently at 2. i'm keeping score. Burnt for me. My mom burned everyone's toast. If you complained, she told you to go to the sink and "scrape it to your desired level of doneness." Jamie P.S. Thanks to everyone for the toaster-at-the-restaurant-table posts. Who knew?

Maybe, just maybe there's a way to get that perfect black and blue burger. Jamie

Oh, I don't know. I think it challenged my conception of what hard candy could be. I especially liked the way the flavor immediately soaked into my lips so that I was forced to experience wave after wave of salty tamarind chile vileness. It's as if Adria got very drunk and flew on a whim to a candy factory in Mexico. Jamie
  14. Suzanne F mentioned at Burger Club last night how hard it was to get a properly done black and blue hamburger. Perhaps she need not look past her own toaster. Maybe there's a business opportunity here. Toasters at every table. It's the new fondue. Everyone laughed at Kramer's pizza restaurant, but I was never convinced that it's not somehow a solid business model. Jamie

Here are the results from the burger at Le Parker Meridien. Final results pending submission of scores from evaluator JosephB. The Parker Meridien burger had the highest overall score yet, with especially high average scores for juiciness and meat quality. Dessert was thoughtfully provided by Suzanne F. I think I speak for everyone (with the possible exception of MHesse) when I say that spicy hot chocolate from the Chocolate Bar far outstrips the salty Tamarind Chile delight she provided. Thanks for yet another great evening of Burger Club fun--I had a blast! Jamie
  16. Thanks for steering the conversation back to the topic, despite my thoughtless attempt to hijack the thread My partner and I are going back to Paris for a week at the end of March, and Au Gourmand sounds like a definite addition to our list! And I'll be sure to ask for a menu. Jamie
  17. Can't speak for Margaret, but I keep a tiny notebook with me when I travel, and I make notes in it. It's slightly nerdy, but preferable to forgetting a wonderful meal. Which I would do, as my memory has been affected by youthful indiscretions I refer to it often when I'm posting on here. I'm also not shy about asking for a copy of the menu as I'm leaving the restaurant, if it seems appropriate and not an inconvenience. Obviously it depends on the establishment, but many have inserts they'll give you at practically no cost to them. I've hardly ever been turned down--for the most part, it seems to be viewed as a compliment. I'd appreciate other people's take on this subject, especially in regards to getting menus. Jamie

That would be me. I'm back in the game now Eval form for Tavern on Jane Eval form for Molly's More details on the .pdfs linked above--you'll need Acrobat Reader to view them. Not everyone agreed on everything, but in general, people felt that the Molly's burger was not salty enough. Many people took issue with the level of browning on the TOJ burger, and the bun was a "bun of contention." It's early, folks. Jamie
  19. My grandfather and my mother, both of whom were old-school butchers and ran mom-and-pop meat market/grocery stores, swore that the best steak was a thick-cut 7-bone chuck steak, and that's what we always ate around the house. Growing up, I thought they were just telling me that so I wouldn't ask for the more expensive steaks. Later in life, I realized that they were serious, and you've reminded me how much I miss that flavor. I'll soon try to get one from a butcher shop, but in the meantime, do you know of any area steakhouses that actually serve these and do a good job with them? Thanks! Jamie
  20. If you want to try the sandwich for free, there are coupons for a free sandwich in November 10 People magazine (cover: Reality TV Couples) and December Parenting. If there's interest I can get a more comprehensive list of titles (I work for a magazine publisher.) Sorry if this is old news. Jamie

You walked by? Then it's YOUR fault! Thanks for your assessment. We moved to the small room at the rear of the restaurant after being seated next to a very loud "ugly American" (pardon the expression) couple, but didn't fare much better back there. Good to know the whole experience was atypical, as we really did enjoy the food. We'll go back next time with a fresh attitude. Jamie
