Last night I made the "broccoli classic" from A Super Upsetting Book About Sandwiches. Roasted broccoli, spicy pickled lychees, toasted pine nuts, ricotta salata, fried shallots and mayo on a sub roll. It was probably the strangest sandwich I have ever eaten, but the flavors worked together. I won't be rushing to make it again anytime soon, but I am glad I tried it. Husband liked it enough to take the leftover sandwich with him to work today.

Have you cooked anything from it? It's a funny book, but so many of the recipes have multiple sub-recipes in them. I think I am going to make some of the lychee muchim this weekend in anticipation of one of the broccoli sandwiches later next week. Last night was burger night. Beef burger and hot dog Veggie burger

Charred broccoli reubens. The recipe was in my local paper on Wednesday and I figured "why not?" We really liked them and I would make them again. I have a cookbook with some broccoli sandwich recipes in it that I have been meaning to try (A Super Upsetting Book About Sandwiches) and now I am going to cook those too.

@Norm Matthews those are beautiful biscuits. I cannot make biscuits to save my life--they come out flat as a pancake every time. Last night, penne with chicken, baby kale and grape tomatoes in a lemon cream sauce

Provincetown, the "Outer Cape," and Wellfleet Too

Sorry about the delay on the final installment. We had a power outage that led to some connectivity issues until my husband had time to restore our network. Oysterfest day one was a bit of a bust. It rained really hard, and it was also incredibly crowded. We could not even get near some of the food tents. We did manage a few things. Clam cakes Baked oysters Raw oysters From this booth The kids had chocolate mousse from a local chocolate company And then went here For this Then we gave up and walked back to the house. We ventured out later that night for dinner at Mac's Shack. Oysters Salad Steamers Drinks Linguini with clams Fish and chips Ritz cracker bluefish Sushi Oysterfest day two. Better weather, less crowded Sea dog (deep fried lobster tail) Lobster roll At this point I was done with seafood, and went for a roasted beet and kale pizza End of Oysterfest That's it until next year. -
Monday, hake steamed on kale wth rice pilaf Last night, rare roasted pistachio crusted salmon on an arugula salad with goat cheese and polenta croutons

It was very tasty, Cod is such a mild fish. I don't normally enjoy cheese with fish, but in this case, it was acceptable. I have not looked at my Oysterfest photos yet, but here are some from a takeout dinner on Friday night. Marconi Station BBQ in Wellfleet. My brother has been trying to get us to go here for years, but we always want fish. He took advantage of the fact that my husband and I were the last people out to Wellfleet and got takeout for dinner. It was late and I was appreciative. Brisket Fried chicken Ribs Smoked chicken There were sides of mac and cheese, slaw, cornbread, and baked beans. I only had a piece of fried chicken. It was very different than the fried chicken I am used to, with a thicker coating. It actually reminded me of this broasted chicken that a local to me grocery sells (Roche Brothers). I prefer my family's recipe, which is marinated in buttermilk and hot sauce and then lightly coated with seasoned flour before frying. -

I've been back since Monday but have not had time to finish this up. Here are the last couple of meals. One day we stopped in to the hotel lounge for a snack of guacamole We hiked along Bermuda's South Shore to work up an appetite for dinner. Here's a picture of my favorite beach We headed to The Dock for pre-dinner drinks View Dinner was at the Waterlot We were seated in the Wine Cellar, which was extremely dark, so I did not get pictures of everything. Garlic roll Wedge salad Beef tartare Fish sampler Last day...we had a quick lunch at Jasmine before heading to the airport. View Shrimp caesar Southwest chicken salad And that's it. It does look like we will be coming down for two weeks next summer. We will be staying in a house (two houses, actually), with a group, and probably only eating out once or twice. I should be able to share some photos of the markets and local foods then. That trip might end up being a better post on the "Bermuda cooking" thread. Until next summer

Nope, not at all. So many islands in the Caribbean were devastated. One of the reasons we came down now is that we are investigating homes to rent next summer. We usually go to St. John for two weeks, but thanks to Irma and Maria, that won't happen next year. So many homes were destroyed and it is going to take a while to rebuild. On to happier thoughts...we were upgraded to the Gold floor, which includes free breakfast, snacks, tea, desserts, and an honor bar. So far we have taken advantage of the breakfast, and a glass of wine from the honor bar. We have not been at the hotel when the other stuff is on offer. Here's a random breakfast plate. The offerings are extensive. And the breakfast view Here's the hotel beach We had fish sandwiches on the beach for lunch. They were made with wahoo, one of my favorites. Lunch view Grilled fish sandwich Fried fish sandwich The hotel is adjacent to Horseshoe Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. We spent the afternoon swimming there and working up an appetite for dinner We ate at Mickey's Bistro at the Elbow Beach Hotel. The restaurant is right on the beach House cured salmon Grilled seafood platter. This had amberjack, mahi mahi, octopus, scallops, and I think calamari. Seafood stew: shrimp, salmon, mahi mahi, scallops, and calamari in a lovely herbed tomato sauce We were too full for dessert.

I am sorry that my dinner choice sort of derailed this topic. I can tell you that bluefin tuna is only available directly from Massachusetts fishermen for a brief time and we are told it is sustainable. That said, in the interest of eGullet I will ask both of the purveyors of the bluefin that I have access to about the issue. One is at my farmer's market (Red's Best) and the other is on Cape Cod (Mac's Seafood). I am not sure how much information I will get from Red's but I know Mac's will be forthcoming. I will see Red's on Tuesday and Mac's the first week of October. After I talk to both of them I will start a new topic (unless one already exists, I'll look) where we can debate the merits of eating various controversial foodstuffs. I'm having fish for dinner tomorrow night. What kind, I don't know, but it won't be tuna. I'm in a fish share and we eat what they give us--usually a lesser known local white fish (please no pollock)

I live in Massachusetts. The tuna fishery is highly regulated here. There is a strict quota and reporting system in place. The boats go out of Cape Ann or Cape Cod and fishing is done by harpoon or hand line The Atlantic bluefin tuna does not appear on the Massachusetts Divisions of Fisheries and Wildlife list of endangered, threatened, or species of concern. In fact, the National Marine Fisheries Service increased the catch limit this season from one fish to four fish per vessel per day.
