As the official Sud fan 'round these parts, I thought I'd provide an update. As those of you in Queen Village may or may not have noticed, Sud has a sign up noting that the dining room is closed for renovations/menu revamp. (Adding to their are-they or are-they-not-open issues. Sigh.)

I ran into to the owner last night, who confirmed my suspicions that he had become overwhelmed. (They really didn't have enough staff, particularly during busy times.) They're doing take-out soups, sandwiches (using Sarcone's rolls), and salads via a little take-out window. According to the menu he gave me, their hours will be 11:30 am-10 pm Wed-Sun. Prices range from $4-11.

Happiest of all for me is that their harira soup is on the menu, which try as I might, I can't quite replicate at home.

I talked to Deborah today. They're no longer serving dinner.

Saturday and Sunday brunch will continue. Plus takeout panini/sandwiches Wednesday-Sunday.

My friend and I stopped by Cafe Sud last week, on a lovely warm evening. They have 2 tables outside.

We split 2 sandwiches:

Pocadillo - Carrots, onions, tomato, cabbage, romaine, beets, rice, chopped hard boiled egg and chopped olives.

Macroata - Batter fried potato patties made with cayenne, cumin, paprika, coriander, garlic, and parsley, served with a sweet tomato sauce and chopped olives.

Both were very tasty, on a Sarcone's roll. I usually avoid beets, but the flavors and textures all came together beautifully on the Pocadillo. It made me start thinking that I should give beets another try! The Macroata was also very good - the potato patties tasted kind of like falafel to me.

There were also several meat sandwiches and some salads on the menu. Each sandwich was made to order, which meant a little wait, but it was worth it!

My sister and I were in the mood for dessert last night and headed to Dessert on S. 6th Street. When we arrived and saw that they were closed, we headed over to Cafe Sud.

It was about 8 pm and we were the only ones in the dining room. The server was warm and friendly; the desserts all looked delicious. My sister opted for the grilled pound cake with frozen red raspberry mousse and I had the first slice of a freshly baked cranberry-blueberry pie.

My sister also ordered a Moroccan fruit juice, which turned into a funny scene. She's highly indecisive, so after finally picking a flavor, she was told that it wasn't in season. We chuckled and then picked a new flavor. Next thing we know, the chef, Moustapha, came out to tell us that they were all out of that. He helped my sister come up with a yummy concoction that he made special for her. He also gave me a complimentary pour of this fruity smoothie-like drink. It was tasty!

Back to the desserts, though. The grilled pound cake was divine. The cake was light, and the grilling made the outside just a little crunchy. Combined with the frozen raspberry mousse that was just slightly melting from the warm pound cake, well, it was like a bite of heaven for me. I had the pie, which was also wonderful. The berry mixture was a good combination of tart and sweet and the pie crust was probably the best I've ever tasted. Before we left, I looked over and saw that the empty spot from my pie slice was now filled with juices from the pie. I'm smiling just thinking about it.

The inside of the place is small, but charming. The service was nice, and we chatted for several minutes with the server. It was a great mix of charming service, atmosphere, and wonderful food, in my opinion. I have plans to go back for dinner with my husband to sample the Moroccan influenced dishes and I hear the brunch is great, too.

I was surprised to see that there wasn't more discussion of the cafe on this board, so I thought I'd add my two cents since I thought it was some of the best dessert I've had in a very long time.

The foodie moved out of East Falls and into Center City...and is eating her way through the city one good place at a time.

Everything I hear about them is good, but every single time I try getting there (a good dozen, by now), they turn out to be closed.

Another FYI on Cafe Sud: they are closing permanently after October 1st. I lived in that neighborhood for a while and never did get around to going there, but I was in the area over the weekend and stopped in for breakfast. I wish I would have done so sooner! Everything was fantastic. I had some coconut-crusted french toast. They've been in business for 30 years according to the sign in the window, but this coming Sunday will be their last day.
