Following on from my last post, this past Saturday my wife and I ventured out to Nori in Caldwell.

This will not be too long a review, but just enough to say that we were both pleasantly surprised. We had some Edamame to kick off - it arrived quickly (no complaints about the service) and gave us time to decide over our main selection:

Highlights:

Yellowtail (Sushi) - Smooth and velvety in texture. Heaven!

Dragon Roll - larger-than-average, with a slight sweetness - very tasty.

Not-so-highlights:

Spicy Tuna Roll - While I enjoyed it, my wife said it was a little chewy. Had pink sauce on it that neither of us had seen before (any ideas what this was?)

Overall it was a positive experience. The place is BYOB, and next time I'll remember to pick up some Saki or a couple of bottle of Sapporo before going there. I'm sure we will revist Nori at some point in the future, although we have a number of other places on the list to try first!

the "spicy" part of spicy rolls is usually a mixture of mayo and hot sauce, which is pink. could that have been it?

is it possible the "pink sauce" you mention was tobiko (that red flying-fish caviar) and mayo? or was it something spicier, where the red was maybe from chilis?

That could be it. I had never seen a Spicy Tuna roll served with a spot of the sauce on top of each part. Certainly the spot of sauce did not have a prominent flavor, it blended in with the rest of the roll.

Glad you gave Nori a try, Jason! I'm pretty sure that the pink stuff was the spicy mayo.

I should have mentioned my favorite roll there--the "Snoopy"--it's a shrimp tempura roll with the most awesome peanut sauce ever--it's like chunky peanut butter right out of the jar, but with something else mixed in. For me, the roll is merely an accessory to the sauce... :biggrin: No, it's not the most authentic sushi roll, but I love it. And of course, now I'm craving one...

Did you see/try any of their creative rolls? Some of them are just gorgeous!

Oh, no...FAR chunkier. I could bathe in it. But that's another story...

It's more likely that there's some soy sauce or tamari or something like it mixed in.

And actually, I should have said that I could exfoliate with it... :wink:

Unless I've had very different satay, I'd have to still say no, Tommy. It's sort of sweet, iirc. I wish I could tell you what it is--but it's been far too long since I've had it! Will have to put that on my to-do list ASAP!! I promise to let you know...

Did you see/try any of their creative rolls?  Some of them are just gorgeous!

I must admit we did not venture into the creative roll menu this time - however, I will say that they do have the most diverse range of 'special' rolls I've ever come across. I'll try one on the next visit! Any other rolls that you'd recommend?

I'm pretty certain that the Godzilla roll is the one that my friend loves...it has fried bananas on top! It's also HUGE--as in, tough to get one piece in your mouth the whole way. But he always ends up ordering it...

Yup! As I've said, they have VERY creative rolls!

That pink sauce is probably the mayonnaise based sauce.

We had dinner at Nori tonight. Started off with seaweed salad which was very good. Lowell is on the quest for the best udon and had Nabe-Yaki Udon which was swimming with seafood. We liked the ingredients better than the broth and although it was good the Udon we had at Monster Sushi in Summit is the best we have had so far. I ordered three different rolls: a Titanic with tempura shrimp and spicy tuna; Zen Zen with tofu and asparagus; and spicy salmon. Loved the Titanic. The others were fine but not worth ordering again. Dinner was $47 with tax and tip. I thought the sushi was better tonight than at the eGullet lunch that we had there recently. Bottom line. We’re still shopping around for the best sushi in the area.
