WTN: D'Arenberg D'Arry's Original 2001

 Dense dark purple, anise and pepper on the nose that my wife could smell from across the room, massive full bodied fruit bomb: 50:50 Shiraz/Grenache - paid $18.95 CAD and bought two cases the next day. Best value I have ever had. Beware of the 15% alcohol though and note it stained my teeth so bad I had to brush two times and floss once to get rid of it. I had more pleasure with this bottle than a 1998 Harlan Estate I had a month earlier.

I got it at the LCBO in Toronto (www.lcbo.com to search quantity) but I hear that you can get it at Liberty in Vancouver if you look or talk with the people there (I understand they are agents for D'arenberg in BC). You can also look at www.winesearcher.com[sic] and see who else brings it in.

Have had this wine back to the 1960's.

Contrary to popular belief it has very little to do with Chester's new swag of modern wines, that I doubt will age anything like this.

This wine is 15%, physiologically ripe, fermented dry, no fancy tricks just old school mclaren vale shiraz. Not sure D'arry doesn't still make this himself?

Nb. chester osborne actually makes very, very little of the wines that carry his name. He does more promotion and flesh pressing, "assistants" get on with the dirty work.

The original is good in nearly every vintage.

A meal without wine is... well, erm, what is that like?

"T" just got a bottle of the 2001 at the Liberty in North Van, $28.95 a bottle. Looking forward to drinking it this weekend. Any suggestions for food?

coop:

It's a fruit bomb. All jammy and ripe. The recc that Scott made would go well. I would add currants and some orange zest. Sounds like a nice fall meal. Thinking of heading to Granville Island and buying a chicken to roast but maybe some lamb for a stew....hmmmmmmmmmmm.......

Enjoy the wine and post some notes.

Where do you shop at Park Royal or Park and Tilford?

I'll try and make it to the next burger function.

So I took this bottle over to dinner at a friend's. It was poured along side a Frog's Leap Zin. Both these wines seemed to be penalized by the glasses they were served in. I will be returning to Park and Tilford's Liberty to procure another bottle for scientific purposes and report back with my findings.

Had this last night. If you ever BBQ'd blackberries, raspberries et al, got them all charred then pressed them into a glass then this is what you would get. Ripe, toasty, charred berries in a glass.

Had it after dinner. Far too much fruit with a meal but nice after dinner with damning political disscusion and cookies.

Yaaaaaa.....Canucks won again tonight.

Wow $28.95CAD at Liberty that is theft (I hope that will change soon). Actually, I am having a glass right now and come to think of it, I would pay 28 or even 40 for it. Good stuff I tell you. I bought a case of the 2001 Dead Arm last weekend here in Toronto. I lined up at 8:00am to get some, it was only $49 a bottle. I have not tried any yet since I have been locked up on Bay street since the 15th of Oct (aside from my manditory wine buying trips that is). Cheers to those on the west coast. I am happy to see the Canuckle  heads are starting off well once again, lets see if they can last....likely not...but there is hope.
