I had a quick dinner at this place on Friday night. I got Pho #7, described as flank with a tomato sauce, but what was actually given to me had a curry sauce complete with little pieces of peanuts. The beef was stew beef in large chunks. It was a very tasty pho. I will be back for more. The price for the pho was $4.25, I think, and I left my standard minimum tip ($1).

Both this and the orginal are very good, and darn cheap.  On a good night with enough people so that many dishes can be ordered, there are few better meals for the money in my book within Manhattan's borders.  Of course I do have a Vietnamese bias when it comes to inexpensive food.  I think the flavor and textural complexity of good pho and noodles is one of my favorite things to eat.

I was there from about 6:45-7:05, then rushed off to a wonderful performance of Porgy and Bess at New York City Opera.

I went back to this place tonight, and got pho #1. It was filling and stomach-warming, and I ate it all up, but I wasn't satisfied with the brisket, which was amazingly cartilageinous and in large (though thin) slices that were extremely difficult to divide into bite-sized pieces. I don't know which Vietnamese place is the best in Chinatown, but I can't believe that this is as good as it gets there nowadays.

Nha Trang is definitely not as good as it gets, although it doesn't get *much* better. Try Thai Son on Baxter and Nam Son on Grand (betw. Chrystie & Bowery). Best Vietnamese in Chinatown IMHO.
