I am looking for and have been unable to find the legal documents that give the official geographical delimitations of AOC wine-making regions in France. Does anyone know where I might find these or even what they are called?
A government agency called the Institut National de l'Origine et de la Qualité (INAO) is in charge of the AOC and IGP systems, both for wine and for other agricultural products, and I presume that it publishes the documents I am looking for. (The alternative is that the delimitations are statuatory, but I don't think this is the case.) I have browsed the INAO's website but have not been able to find what I'm looking for, partly because the search functions seem to work poorly, but also because I don't really know what I'm looking for.
There are more rules than just those on origin that go into qualifying for AOC or IGP status, but right now I am only interested in the geographical delimitations, especially for Burgundy. I want to see how the geographic boundaries are defined at all three levels (i.e., regional, village, and vineyard) in the actual legal language. So I want, for example, the document that says "you can put 'Vosne-Romanée' on your label if your grapes all come from the region bounded on the west by the Route Nationale 74, on the north by a line from the big oak tree to Jean-Michel's mailbox, on the east by ...", etc. Or however the boundaries are actually formulated.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
