  1. [[ actually, i'm all about prepared foods with good, wholesome, honest ingredients. like pasta sauces and soups. maybe i'll do a comparison including TJ on items like that. ]] there you go!! that's why I totally love TJ!! [[ now leave me alone...i've got some shopping to do. ]] haha! you certainly do. now get out there, man!! what's your blog address???
  2. Deldino, thanks for that link. I missed it in the paper somehow. glad to get a do-over. Tommy, great idea for your blog. why not throw in TJ comparisons too? I'm a huge TJ fan. Does anyone know when the Edgewater store might open?
  3. TJ in Edgewater not open yet. it will be in the same parking log at the Binghamton. You remember that, no? Marge
  4. When I saw that little article, I jumped up and clicked my heels!!! great news!!!! great location!!!! bravo, Trader Joe's, for finally getting SMART!!!
  5. [[ Chat 'n Chew! I never even thought about this, but I should have - it's great for cheap and cheerful. I've always found it a big hit with out-of-town guests, particularly those with kids. ]] We were 3 fully grown people and we just loved it. For dinner we went here and also loved it. I've been here several times over the years but not in a few years. I'll be back there SOON: Zen Palate 663 Ninth Ave., (corner of 46th) 212-582-1669 http://www.zenpalate.com/ DELICIOUS AND WONDERFUL FOOD. Off topic but I've got to throw it in. I just love this place. After half a day, my feet were killing me. Chinese slippers for $8 at this place saved the day. I wore them the rest of the day IN COMFORT! Pearl River Mart www.pearlriver.com 477 Broadway (near Broome St.) 212-431-4770 To see how they look, go here: http://picasaweb.google.com/marge201/63006...982177041645586 Would I walk around like that in Bergen County? I doubt it. NYC? DEFINITELY!! Marge
  6. I apologize for violating the rules but I went here yesterday and loved it and if I lived in the city it would be a regular place for me: Chat 'n Chew, 10 East 16th Street, 212-243-1616 www.chatnchewnyc.com adorably decorated great music playing (Springsteen, Grateful Dead for example) delicious food cheap, friendly place.
  7. I went to Siam Thai in Fort Lee Sunday night, 7-2-06. Three of us loved it. To see what we ate and descriptions and prices, go here. http://picasaweb.google.com/marge201/SiamThaiRestaurant7206 If you click on each pic, I give the description & price. I would have put them here in my post but I see no way to do that! Marge
  8. [[ Siam Thai Cuisine - Fort Lee. Mid-range in both price and quality. ]] dissenting opinion here. I say a lot better than mid range in quality. You get reasonable prices and terrific food at Siam Thai Cuisine in Fort Lee. [[ Very nice atmosphere (it's got big glass windows) ]] agree. Plus the owners are so delightful. A true mom 'n pop place: Thai wife/chef and her American husband manager/schmoozer. [[ but the parking is a bit difficult ]] untrue!! they have a huge lot in the back. have to walk up a full flight of steps from the lot to the restaurant, but somebody can be dropped off in front while the car is being parked. [[ You can achieve very spicy food with the condiments they give you, but for me it's never quite as good as a place where it's cooked to the spicyness I want. ]] I like intensely flavorful but not hot spicy, which ruins my palate. For me the food is totally delicious and interesting and fun. I went there last week and I'm going back tonight. Just love the place. Siam Thai Restaurant, 89 Main Street, Fort Lee, NJ 201-242-7426 Marge
  9. [[ I just heard they are also opening in Edgewater, in the old movie theatre location in the Binhamton Shopping Center. ]] oh please please please please please please please please please!!!!!!!!!!!! that would be so perfect for this area. and for me. I called Trader Joe over a year ago and told them that Edgewater would be perfect. I wonder if I get the credit if this is indeed true <ggg>!! And that Binghamton location would be perfect for the crowds that are bound to show up plus would be a huge shot in the arm for that sorry little shopping center. Marge
  10. Great news about Trader Joe coming to Paramus!!! It's a grocery story so it's got to be open Sundays. Right????? I HOPE SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's my favorite store in the world, mostly for the frozen food. It's healthy convenience food, the stuff I buy anyway. They've got plenty of really fattening stuff, too, but if you're trying to eat healthy, they've got it there big time. I love that place!! Marge
  11. Waterwheel was great. I just love that place. good coffee. great sweet potato fries. delicious salad with grilled chicken, I think the Waterwheel Salad. Sister-in-law had their veggie burger and she loved it. It was NOT a Garden Burger (not that there's anything wrong with that) but a lot better and thicker and looked great. No, they don't have a website. they should. next time I go there, I'll tell them to get with it! Marge
  12. You're welcome, Liz. I'll be at Waterwheel tomorrow, 2-19-06 for lunch. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do! Marge
  13. Totally enjoyed the evening! Really appreciate the effort involved in making it happen. VERY NICE PEOPLE and DELICIOUS FOOD. Will be sure to attend next year's event and look forward to other egullet events, too. Rachel, your jello mold was FABULOUS. Hit the spot. Too bad they served the underripe melon cold. Room temperature is the only hope it had to be edible. Marge (I wore purple and sat with Mike and Helen, Marlene, Stanley, Steve, and forgive me but I forget the names of Mike & Helen's partners in Silver Oak Bistro, which I can't wait to try.)
  14. [[ Waterwheel, 272 Route 59, Tallman, NY 845-357-3725 fax 845-357-3882 Casual and very reasonable prices, a true mom 'n pop, delicious food. Looks like a ski lodge. I had my dad's 90th BD party there a few weeks ago and it was spectacular. Many people mentioned how good the food is. And it is. Delightful place. Very close to Airmont Road. ]] [[ I've always wondered about that place — I've never been. What kind of food? What do you recommend? ]] Everything is good there. Salmon, pastas, salads. delicious food. breakfast is great too. I forget what I've ordered but whatever it was was so pleasant and enjoyable that I look forward to going back any time I visit my dad, who lives a mile from there.

  16. Megan, GREAT GREAT TJ article. thank you! As a major TJ fan, I can tell y'all that this article is totally right on, especially about the frozen foods. Get real food there and not just fattening snack foods and you'll be addicted for life to that place. And the frozen meals are the best. look at the fat content. they have plenty of stuff with 15 grams of fat per serving. but they have plenty with under 5 grams of fat per serving too! Let me quote from the blog: "Frozen foods: Here is where they separate themselves from the pack with unique offerings. You won’t find any Swansons crap here. Frozen soy chorizo and potato flautas or chicken lasagne, for example. Lots of Mexican, Asian, vegetarian and ice cream offerings. Mochi ice cream is stocked regularly. Vegetable side dishes galore." SO SO TRUE!!!!! (I hope I was allowed to quote that!) Marge
  17. Trader Joe's is my favorite store in the world. I gave a $100 gift card recently for a bridal shower. I give various denomination gift cards all the time. Their gift cards NEVER EXPIRE, another reason that TJ is so great. Because there is not close to me, I only go a few times a year and never get out for under $200. The stuff there is fabulous and well priced. And unique. Most nights I eat something from Trader Joe whether it be a frozen veggie pizza or a veggie blend that I take from the freezer and steam or cereal (better prices than supermarkets) or soups or rice or a frozen burrito, everything low fat and ready to eat. GREAT GREAT PLACE!! I wish one would open near Fort Lee. Westwood is totally inconvenient! Enjoy TJ, you 14th Streeters! Marge
  18. I haven't been to egullet in quite a while and am delighted that I got this email today from Jason. I've never been to this place and it's 2 miles from my house! I'm just delighted to be attending. It will be my first egullet event. Great menu. I'm totally tantalized!
  19. Moderator Note: Threads Merged. Forgive me for taking so long to come back with a thanks and a follow-up. In early June I posted a query for a restaurant in Clark. I had a 2-day seminar at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Clark and needed a place for dinner. Here's the responses I got: Mojave Grill, 235 Northfield Ave or Theresa’s 47 Elm St. are both BYO. I worked in Clark for 5 years. I really don't think there's anything within short walking distance from the hotel. The only interesting place to eat would be the White Diamond, but that's probably a little more casual than you're looking for! Less interesting, but good: Momotaro, dependable & charming Japanese, Tarantella's, probably better for lunch, their dining room is kind of blah, The Thai House, downmarket Thai in an old diner, food is par for the course for suburban NJ. There is an "Irish" pub called Molly McGuire's that used to be Casual Times. I haven't been there since they changed their image but it is one of those places that has good food and is definitely preferable to Bennigan's. Speaking of which, don't let anyone drag you to Steak & Ale or Chili's. Steak & Ale is OK during the day but depressing at night. For a relaxing and uplifting dinner, I would definitely say Momotaro. Momotaro Japanese Cuisine 1425 Raritan Rd Clark, NJ 07066 732-396-8668 We went to Momotaro and it was FABULOUS. There were 8 of us and we enjoyed the meal immensely. Nice service, great food. Thank you!!! Just for the record, Crown Plaza Hotel in Clark was awful. They put a party with a DJ across the hall from our seminar room. It totally ruined the seminar because we couldn't hear anything. This was a voluntary seminar that cost $200/day for each participant so you can understand how ticked off we were. Complaints to the front desk were a total waste of time because nobody could be moved. Horrible stupid planning by the hotel staff. I would never use that hotel again after that. They clearly can't be trusted. But Momotaro, I recommend highly. I'm sorry that I didn't jot down the name of the person who gave me the advice but thank you! Marge
  20. Rosie, I have discovered why my friend nixed all Asian: she seems to be gastronomically challenged and has not eaten Chinese, Japanese or Thai food in her life!! And this from a very sophisticated person. Go figure! So I offered her a deal: I treat and she goes where I say and she knows she can trust me and accepted the deal. She'll go for the tip and dessert. Sooo, with that settled, we're going to Momotaro because I love Japanese food and it's close. I have to go home later and be back in Clark at 8:30 a.m. the next day, so I'm interested in CLOSE. I will keep handy your ideas, Rosie. They sound good to me. [[ Mojave Grill, 235 Northfield Ave or Theresa’s 47 Elm St. are both BYO. ]] Brian, thanks a lot for your ideas. I will save that info for the future when I'm not in a time crunch. Marge
  21. Dear Queen of Grilled Cheese/Kimchee/Babyluck, You are certainly a bundle of contradictions!!! Thank you so much for your thoughts! I know that White Diamond!! I have never once eaten there! OK, so my friend is buzzin' around here and she has nixed Chinese, Japanese or Thai! Oh, no!! I would have picked The Thai House or Momotaro. Looks like Molly McGuire's might be for us that night, Central Avenue, Clark [[ Speaking of which, don't let anyone drag you to Steak & Ale or Chili's. Steak & Ale is OK during the day but depressing at night. ]] No problem <ggg> Thank you for taking the time to give such a nice response! Marge
  22. I will be at the Crown Plaza in Clark on Friday, June 4 for an all-day seminar. Would love to have a nice interesting casual dinner with a colleague that evening. Requirement: very close to the Crown Plaza not "expensive" Ideas anyone? Marge
  23. I'm going to a great cook's house in Montclair. I'm bringing a huge platter of dried fruit that looks great, bought in Costco. Also bringing a few pounds of pecans as a throw-in, as I just read this today: http://www.realage.com/news_features/tip.a...cid=14868&ref=1 It talks about pecans being really healthy. I'd cut and paste it for y'all but those copyright laws prevent it. Darn!
  24. [[ Posting the link is just as easy, if not easier than copying an entire article. Just use the http:// button above the reply window. ]] I copy and paste reviews (only good ones obviously, places I want to go to or have been to) and don't bother with the link because (a) that's the whole purpose of me doing this little exercise in the first place and (b) links to newspaper articles go stale after a while so I don't bother. The Moon Street review I posted was a year old and I'm sure if I had kept the link at the time that it wouldn't work today anyway. Isn't it just the silliest thing that if someone has a saved review from a magazine or newspaper that they can't post it for everybody to see? I'll comply certainly but why are we even talking about this?
  25. it's too much trouble to post the link now that I think about it. plus the fact that links to newspaper articles only work so long. In the future I'll just say, "I have a great review of the restaurant. Not allowed to post it. Email me and I'll send it to you." Seems silly to me but if that's the way it is, I'll certainly comply.
