Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 1)
nwyles replied to a topic in Western Canada: Dining
I can't imagine a time when I am not there ! It feels like I am there all the time...days blend into the next........glad to know things were fine when I was out of the building. Ok , to the meat of the matter - the last three restaurants I was at. Joan and I went to Seattle for a quick overnight without the kids. P.F. Changs China bistro for a beer and a quick bite while shopping. Lettuce wrap - always good and fresh , mini ribs , tasty and some shrimp dumplings . Then back on the shopping trail. Dinner at Oceanaire that night. Nice. but in hindsight I would have preferred to go something a little different like Restaurant Zoe or Flying Fish but we go there whenever we go to Seattle and wanted to try something different. Always go with the first instinct. Next time And prior to that , Chambar, which has been discussed at length on this board. Can't wait to go for dinner. Are they open on Sundays ? We are doing a thing at the Dr. Peter Center tonight and want to have dinner afterwards as we have the babysitter until 11:00 -
Try Nicholson Equipment for baking equipment and Snowcrest for baking supplies. That last time I checked , they had everything you could possibly need. Good luck !

On Wilson's Blair Wilson ( ran in recent Fed. Election in West Vancouver ) - owns this place as well as Mahoney's on Robson Street. Nice room etc. Hard to fill with no hockey. This is truely an event location ( like the Shark Club ) It will be a tough go this year. As the owner of a steakhouse a stones throw away , I did check it out a couple of times. Pretty much the only people in the room both times. Wish them well but I will take the over on this. I do not see it lasting into next summer without a major sports draw ( and sorry , that is not the B.C. Lions )

Ok , I'll be the one. Went to Chambar with wife - food excellent. Knocked over my beer all over bar. Bartender took at least 2 seconds to wipe it up ! What sort of goat rodeo are they running. Where are the service standards ! What was the bartender doing in that extra second ! All kidding aside , had a great time and can't wait to go back and have a full dinner. Neil

I went through the border this week and had to go inside to immigration ( I have a British passport ) The border guard was nice enough but said the only place in Canada he would like to visit is White Rock. He said we have too much crime " Up there " in Canada. As I just wanted to be on my way , I did not respond, just nodded like an idiot , thanked him and was on my way. Where do the get their information? His impression was that Canada was a crime ridden, drug haven. Is that what the World around us sees ? I do not want to get into a big debate us vs. them etc , it was just sad to see that our fair city had such a bad rap. It was good to get home. I feel safe here.

A PHD in plumbing is the way to go. I hear that enrolment numbers at BCIT are dropping, old guys retire, lots of work. Rates will move up to $85 per hour. A good living and steady work all year round !

I have seen it a few times - I love it ! As for the AM radio , the only news fix with the outside world is when I am moving from home to work. I really find it hard to imagine that much cash on site. This happened halfway through the business day so I think the $6700 is a realistic number. As you already did the math , it would be hard for so few staff to move so much product every 30 seconds of the day. Are they charging tax on this ? I wonder who they would submit that to ?

I was on the road for the last couple of days and heard this story as it broke on News 1130 I heard $5000 Canadian and $1700.00 US for a total of $6700 Then later it is turned into $67000.00 Could this be mistake by some hevy fingered copy writer at the radio station ? If these guys have that much money on site , it would a perfect place to rob. Walk in and take the money " Dude , why are you harshing on my scene man " would be the response. Oh and " Hey men, do you want a brownie ! " A little blown out of proportion I think. Legalize it and tax the shit out of it !!

Let's get a menu together of some fantastic " Westcoast " cuisine , send it to him and see if he is up for it. We know that this is quite a time involved tour so it must be great to drag him out late at night after a long day of gladhanding. I have a few ideas floating around in my head. Any suggestions ? I know there is another forum discussing " Westcoast " Cuisine. I do not want to debate that here. A West Coast chef cooking West coast product with perhaps a few local methods would be enough in my book to call it " Westcoast " Let's get some ideas bouncing around !

It's 5:30 now and I finished mine about half an hour ago. Delish ! The Canadain Food and Drug people can not confiscate what is already eaten can they. ( please do not answer that as the quality of posts could deteriorate very quickly ) Now, how do we get some prohibited cheeses !

Big portions for little $$ Some people think that quantity is quality which is sad. I hear that Taki's a couple of doors down has far better food.

It is the end ofthe summer, people out of town, dragging their kids to the PNE etc. I know that our place has it's best months in the cooler weather. Fear not, a couple of weeks into Sept. and Thursdays will return.

You would put it in the cooler and let it harden and use it as butter for you bread on special days. Yum , butter !
-
You forgot to add the he would add 10 liters of water to it, call it soup, give you crusts of yesterday's bread and then you could thank him for his kindness. And for dinner the next day, carrot peel soup ! Yum, and gritty too.

IN our market ( Vancouver , B.C. , Canada ) where the gubment controls what we drink, the best bet for my money, is Ketel One. We have other premium vod's Grey goode , Belvedere etc but the are $45.00 a bottle. Ketel is $27 a bottle and is just as good. I must qualify that by saying that I don't think that there is a huge gap between these brands other than the price. Rocks, a twist , it's all good !

No hate at all. I just find that " they " as an egocentric American publiucation , gloss over ( although we did get in the wine spec. ) the Okanagan Valley in a short article and it is always about Napa , Napa etc......... I would like to see some more detailed articles on specific wineries etc.

Need your opinion on a seafood resturant..

Is Salumi Mario Batali's father's place ? I understand it is in Seattle. My wife loves Mario. We call him her boyfriend ! P.S. we are working on pastrami -
Keith - it is OK. You are getting your point in. I'd be happy to eat it either way as long as I did not have to cook, and I had a glass of wine in hand ! Why anyone would want to replace boiled carrots, onions and celery in a sauce with some fresh mushroom or other fresh vegetables is beyond me. And wasteful ! At least $2.00 worth of carrots, onion and celery ! Forgive me , I am just teasing you as I have a few minutes on my hand. Seriously though, I think you would want to remove the fat and make more of a demi glace than a gravy to enjoy this .

I am heading down to Seattle from Vancouver, B.C. in a couple of weeks. We have always had a great time at Christine Keff's Flying Fish. I had heard that Fandango - her other place across the street had closed - can anyone confirm. We actuall went in there on their opening night - just happened to be there. Wild Ginger - I hear it is in a new location - any comments ? Zoe - I had a great couple on snacks there. Does anyone have comments about dinner. Love the Palace Kitchen. Did not love the new Dahlia Lounge local. Has it improved from a couple of years ago. Any other Seattle restaurants I should visit. We drop the kids with the sister - in law and have about 36 hours to go crazy ! -
Wow ! Has this been on your mind ? You get my vote ! Stovetop Steve for Premier !

Sorry man. I could have just let you live in ignorant bliss but where is the fun in that ! It was the July issue. I bought it because I can not go into Barbara Jo's without buying anything. I found the article to gloss over the Valley unlike an in depth article. I mean you see so many articles on a particular acre in Napa and the two guys who harvest the grapes on it and a brief gloosing over of the whole Okanagan Valley. But hey , any press is good press !
-
I think this is old news man ! Mr. Maw reported on this some time ago. Nice to see someone bring attention to it again. Although Mr. Maw did not provide link. See July 25th " Oh no , We've been discovered "

Out of business about 7 years ago. The company went bankrupt if I recall.

My computer at work is on the way to dry storage - who am I kidding - it is in dry storage so I check everytime I walk by and sometimes I make a special trip to see if anyone has posted. Are there any old time Egulleters out there who can tell me when this will wear off and I become normal again ? I am hoping the average age of Vancouver Egulleters is around 30 - who am I kidding , closer to 40 ! I for one am looking forward to putting names and faces together. I post under my name but not everyone does. So when I meet you ano the street one day we could use real names so my wife does not think I am some "Uber-geek" with friends with codenames. Please save me from a lifetime of scorn and ridicule! Arne - how many people will be coming to our little event - menu planning is under way !! P.S. It is time to start the new thread about the Bourdain dinner as this has strayed off topic - for which I am guilty !
