  1. The ones that look like puffy Cheesies but aren't? What flavours are available in Japan? I've tried the maple syrup & strawberry ones, and yesterday I saw the green tea one & am going to try that flavour next time. I tend to like salty snacks though. they have flavored ones? Maybe we are thinking different things, these are actually corn kernels puffed up they are sort of a yellow brown and taste a little like sugar smacks (the cereal) but not as sweet. Ohhhhh, yeah, we're talking about totally different things ^___^ I can picture what you're talking about, but I've never actually seen them before.

  3. The fruit is coconut meat (I think the part in the centre, not the white milky part). Where do you live? They're readily available here in Vancouver--the new fad is pudding flavoured ones.
  4. Well, I live in Canada & haven't been to Japan yet, but all the candies that everybody's been talking about here are also available here in Vancouver. Green apple flavour--yeah, I find that it tends to taste fake. I haven't had Meltykiss yet--is it really that good? It's a bit expensive here at the Asian supermarkets, but I will try it next time I'm in the mood for chocolate. Chewy candies--Uha also makes ones similar to Hi-Chew, but I'm not sure if they come in fruit flavours. They're yogourt candies with little gummy bits inside--I've tried the grape, orange, & strawberry flavours. I like the grape one the most!
  5. Really? You don't like yogurt & milk-flavoured candies? How bout actual yogurt or milk? I really like Poi-ful too! I haven't tried the normal-flavoured ones, but I do like the Calpis-flavoured ones. I'll keep a lookout for the kakigori-flavoured ones here. Chewy things wrapped in rice paper? Were they white and did they have a rabbit on the wrapper? If they did, I hate to tell you....those are milk candies! ^___^ I like those too, but I think those are Chinese candies.
  6. I'm surprised that no-one has posted a topic on Japanese candy! Save for the odd thread or two (Wagashi), most of the topics on this forum seem to be pre-occupied with savoury food. Japanese candy is by far my favourite type (nationality?) of candy.... At the moment I can't decide which are my favourite candies though... However, fruit-flavour wise, I do love muscat and apple flavours. I also really like green tea flavour. There's a soft & chewy green tea candy here that actually has macha (sp?) powder dusted onto it--my boyfriend didn't like it because he wasn't expecting candy to be so bitter. I recently had the blood orange flavour of Hi-Chew (the first time I bought it, it fell out of a little hole in the plastic grocery bag & I never found it ) , but it didn't wow me. I don't really know what I was expecting... I used to be a fan of gummies until some more exciting candies came out, although I have to say that Kasugai makes a very delicious selection. They used to have milk flavour, but I don't think they make that anymore. Out of Kasugai's gummy flavours, I like apple (tastes like apple juice!) and muscat the best. The strawberry and kiwi flavours are also really good. The lychee is not bad. So, candy lovers out there.....I'm waiting to hear from you! What are your favourite candies? What's the best/worst-flavoured candy you've had? What's the most unusual candy/candy flavour you've seen? Do you like hard or soft candies better? Sorry for the extremely lengthy post, by the way...
  7. I LOVE Hi-Chew!! They sell them here too, actually (again, at the Asian supermarkets...I don't know where I'd be without them...). I've seen the Japanese cherry flavour, but have yet to try it...There's also a new candy by Uha (sp?) that makes candies that are similar to Hi-Chew, but there are little gummy bits inside--in my opinion, even better than Hi-Chew. I've tried the grape, orange, & just bought strawberry. I really like the grape one--I sent them to my boyfriend & he loved them too! Snacks....so many.....too many....I really love Wasabi peas...I've discovered that Kasugai makes the best ones--they're more Wasabi-ish. Once, at a trendy "home-living" store, I saw wasabi peas packaged really nicely into a tiny plastic cube, & they were something like C$5, something ridiculous like that. They're usually C$2 a bag here. I also love Pocky, although I like Pretz more. There's a new Pretz flavour here--Digestive. On the box it has a picture of honey & wheat, which I thought it would taste like--like Digestive cookies...Unfortunately, they tasted more like sweet butter pretz...kinda disappointing, although they weren't too bad...Too buttery though... I don't tend to buy rice crackers here--I try to be more adventurous & try things that're more out of the ordinary....Oh, I really like these crackers called "Beano" (or is that the brand name?), & they're puffy bean thingies...like cheese puffs, except with bean in them...They don't sound that appetizing, but they are!
  8. On the topic of nankotsu...I don't believe I have tried the Japanese variety (but I will the next time I go to a new restaurant called "Hapa Izakaya" here in Vancouver--highly recommended, by the way), but they do have this as a dish in Chinese dim sum places. At Chinese restaurants, the cartilage is from the knee--translated, they're called "chicken knees". They're always deep-fried, & are usually flavoured with a mixture of spicy 5-spice (?) salt. I love them!
  9. Wow, those are quite exotic flavours! I wonder if they make curry, vindaloo, & tandoori-flavoured chips in India? I believe Thunder Crunch made curry-flavoured chips for a while (I was afraid to try them), but I haven't seen them lately here in Vancouver...they also used to make really yummy BBQ and Buffalo Wings flavours... I wonder what happened to them? And as someone mentioned before, Pringles makes curry-flavoured chips as well (I don't remember if they sell them in North America though--they might at the Asian supermarkets). The Asian Calbee brand also makes curry-flavoured chips (available in Asian supermarkets). Sichuan/szechuan--maybe they make that in China or Japan? I don't suppose they would be very spicy if they were made in Japan though--I've heard that many Japanese don't like things that are intensely flavoured. Mmmmm....smoked salmon sounds delicious...I've been a bit obsessed with smoked salmon foodstuffs lately...Luckily, I live in Vancouver ^___^ Clam chowder also sounds very good... I seem to remember seeing gravy-flavoured chips lately... Oh, I think they were Old Dutch (someone correct me here?)--steak & gravy, I think? I was quite disappointed with that...
  10. Thank you! ^__^ Mmmmm, candy...
  11. I was recently in Greece, and they had three "Mediterranean" flavours (limited time offer, maybe?). The flavours were tzatziki, tomato & olive, and feta. I tried the tzatziki and tomato & olive flavours, and they were delicious!! The tzatziki has a nice yogourt & cucumber taste, with some dill and garlic flavours as well (and some other spices, but I don't remember what the ingredients were). The tomato & olive flavoured chips were also quite good, although I couldn't taste the tomato--I think the olive flavour overpowered it. They should've just named it "olive" flavour. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try the feta cheese flavour. And in response to an earlier post from I don't remember when, I tried Lay's "P.E.I. loaded baked potato" flavour recently & I agree, the flavour doesn't quite work with the texture of the thin Lay's chip. However, Ruffles has a flavour, "The Works" (only available in Canada?), and that is one of my favourite Ruffles flavours. If anyone wants to try Japanese chips in Vancouver, there is a huge variety at the Chinese grocery stores in Richmond--one of the biggest being Osaka supermarket at Yaohan Centre. There is also a candy/junk food store upstairs called "Candyland" and they have some unusual Japanese junk food that Osaka supermarket doesn't carry. I saw the "corn potage" flavoured ones there. And lastly, is there a forum/thread for Japanese candy here? I'm new & I haven't had a chance to look through all the threads yet...
