  1. Was wondering the same thing in another thread. I am sure you are looking stuff like this. This was from Takayama. I know of one place that sells Wagyu beef (I understand the cattle are raised in Alberta) but no one that sells real imported Wagyu or other species of Japanese cattle. The latter is also what I am looking for.
  2. This may be too late but I love the lounge at Jiko at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. The best south african wine selection by the glass I have ever seen. Not too busy though but great for these wines that, at least here in Toronto, I never see anywhere else.
  3. I would suggest you may want to call: Felipe Villaveces Wine Warehouse of Ft. Lauderdale 2554 N. Federal Highway Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33305 (next to Skyline Chili) (954) 376-3697 He was great when I was buying in advance for my parents to pick up some wine for their cruise. WW also has some of the best bubbly prices in the state and got some of the best Zind Humbrecht prices I have ever seen in the US.
  4. I am not arb but the press release seems to tell it all: http://www.thriftyfoods.com/ourcompany/mdr...srl_070716.html I am sure those out there that read tea leaves better than I do can shed a little light on what the press release "really" says. I do agree, it is very sad to see the little, sort of speak, guys get gobbled up. I guess that is the price of growth.
  5. wow that is pretty crazy. just curious, would the items served be the items that could be sold under the new rules. was that the point? some of the photos look great from your wife's post.
  6. It does seem funny that BC's premier seems to be advocating more open inter-provincial trade....I suspect booze is not on the table for discussion though.
  7. Interesting. It seems as though production on this is pretty high. I was very surprised to see how high the production on the first label is given the price tag. It certainly is not limited in any way.
  8. Appreciate the input. If you have never been to the 53rd and 6th Halal Cart, Tiger Halal at 49th and 6th, Refiqi's on Park Ave. and 32nd St or Calexico Carne Asada in SOHO on Wooster Street at Prince in NYC or the other many street carts in NYC where you can get great and diverse food for five bucks - taxes in - then, I agree the whole thing is a non-news or silly for you - that said, you are entitled to your opinion. I find take out pretty expensive in this city. I certainly can understand with rents as high as they are. That said, I am not aware of too many places that I can get take out for the price of some of those places in NYC in this city (or for that matter under 7 or 8 bucks taxes in) at that quality and portion size. I would love to know where I could.
  9. Not sure when you were last at Le Papillon but I was there in Feb? - not sure exact date...but sure I could not advise any to go there... ← I apologize, I know this is a Le Select thread, but I'm curious what you had at Le Papillon that left you so disappointed. I seem to recall you might have gone after I'd posted something positive, so I feel somewhat responsible... ← Do not worry one bit. I went in part because of others also. PM sent to you regarding the same.
  10. Just wondering if you know anyone in Toronto that sells (or even serves) the real Kobe beef from Kobe - I know many get the Wagu from Alberta and other places in the US. I agree...way to much blood red beef out there. The best beef I have had is the one that is almost pink due to all the marbling from hills around Takayama. Man do I miss that Hida beef sashimi.....there were some other pieces that would sell for up to 4,500Y/100g or 185 bucks a pound. Yikes!
  11. i think we will just have to agree to disagree on this one.
  12. I think I am with Jayt90 on this for now. Sorry for being such a sceptic but I would rather dump on the government first (and be wrong), since typically that is the proper course of action IMO, since they like to look like they are giving when really they are not giving at all - I am sure when they starting thinking about this it was much broader until it got watered down to where it is now. I suspect we will never see something like the 53rd and 6th Halal Cart in this city. I really really want to be proved wrong on this one.
  13. i think it only gets better if you cast the traps of the whiterock pier yourself with a little chicken for bait.....i always get freaked out when you have to tear the heads off to clean them out...glad another did that for you. makes me feel as bad as getting lobsters split while alive...man do I love that crab...in Toronto it's called Vancouver crab...

    Splendido

    I saw that also. Yikes.
  15. I had heard good things about it, I think I even looked at your post, but just not good when I went. I would agree, that Le Select is good. They allow BYOW which is good in my book since their list is in line with others mark ups. I usually go on others dimes though.

  17. We went to one of the bars in the Granvia - and they do have a cover charge (not unusual in Japan). About $5 a person. Not a reason not to go - it's just something that a potential customer should keep in mind. Robyn ← Keep in mind also between 5-7 is happy hour in one of the bars when all no bottles are 50% off. You can get a outstanding glass of scotch for only 6 bucks which is a steal. not sure the name but the big add make sure you can not miss it at the Granvia. I partook many times.
  18. Sure its large and its hard to get around but it is not that large (would love to know where you get the 35M?). Even taking into consideration Yokohama only gets you to maybe 16M. Central is only around 9. That said to the OP, if you have concerns about getting lost, pick up a copy of the Tokyo City Atlas (its bilingual) and its pretty easy to navigate what many out there call unnavigatable. Sure finding the last block number can be a little tough but its a little overstated IMO. Its pretty hard to get lost in Kyoto. EDITED TO ADD *** I think I found out that if you look at the huge area that surrounds Tokyo you can get to 35M*** That said, I think that you should really look at central Tokyo as a measure***

    Summerlicious

Bymark at full price is the same as this summer and winter events. I usually only go to Bymark and Canoe during the event so this is all I can compare. Same with Canoe, they usually do not cut any corners when I have been there. I have been to both for lunch and dinner close to a half dozen times each at full price (lunch, dinner and closing dinners and private functions) and both the summer and winter events in total 3 times for Canoe for dinner, 2 times for lunch at Canoe and 2 times at Bymark for dinner and 2 times for lunch during this event. I think it really depends. If a place has overlap with their regular menu and also offer the regular menu, chances are it will be just as good. That is usually the key. Never been rushed out in either place but then again, I know staff in both so that seems to help.

I enjoy it when I go. I usually go to Canoe each time and have blast and will do so again for a dinner and a lunch. Do not go out as much these days so this will probably be it for me, perhaps Bymark for dinner also (have a reservation but not sure I will use it yet).
  21. One of the best deals out there!
  22. Alas - did not make it to John's. Ended up in a meeting that lasted 8 hours! I am kicking myself for not making it out to John's and going to Batali's Otto instead. ← too bad.
  23. We stayed at the same hotels. The link I PM'd you will be exactly what you want and was prepared by locals. Interesting but Toronto is a big city also and I would be able to list off my 10 tops right away all over the city. I find that the response that you are getting seems to be what I initially got. I would also suggest that you get Kanji characters for the places also since a roman name is pretty much meaningless and useless when you are out on the street looking for a place IMO if the name of the place is not in roman letters.
  24. I loved Ten Ichi in the Kyoto station complex for Tempura. So fresh your mouth with burn, literally if you are not careful. Ask your hotel concierge to make a reservation at the bar or just wait for a seat to come up http://www.bento.com/kansai/rev/7033.html Around $45CDN each but well worth it.
  25. God would I love to try a bottle. PM me if you think you can fit one in your suitcase. Should be easy to mail to Toronto from Cleveland....a nice 3 hour drive.
