  1. Soup Soup had one last week and it made a great take out. It's a take out soup place. Just across from Reservoir, st-laurent duluth.
  2. slebowitz, please read the quebec city post I will add on there. Yes, Chrisser, you're right... I meant gettho in the nice bohemian girl with Dior enlarged glasses_I_code_for_video_games bi in a loft kind of way. I also suggest Le Continental on St-Denis.
  3. hahahaha this thread is kind of funny in a way...
  4. That's a tough call, if it's nice outside and you have a couple of hours to kill. I would drive up to Laurier street and have some food at Lemeac on an off hour. You could also take your kid to Au Pied de Cochon which is kind of a luxury shack, tavern. Parking around there is not easy though. If you want to go a bit more getto, you can taste terrific sandwich and pastries in the old Montreal at Olive and Gourmando, plenty of sugar for the kids ! The Holder Brasserie would also work well. Even L'Express. The trick is to set your day up on an off timing (late lunch or early dinner, when there is less people around). You will be able to eat outside at Lemeac, that's also a bonus for throwing food at pigeons ! Reguarding Hatley. First of all, the Hatley folks should continue the great service philosophy of the Germains familly, these people will make everything possible for you. They will suggest timing, table, seating, food, etc... They are top notch for that stuff and may even have the best temp baby sitter to play in the yard... make sure you just let them know. Should you have more meals to have in the area. There is a small pub for junk food in Hatley. You can also drive across the lake to Hovey Manor which is slightly less stuffy than Hatley and be sure to grab a table at Table Tourigny in Georgeville if you want to go to food heaven, kid friendly... sure, it should, it's almost like having a meal in someone's kitchen...
  5. Since I get confused between Lemeac, La Chronique, Spag, Ardoise, Gascogne, the baby stores, Chayo, Anise... I'm pretty good between south and north, I suck at est west.
  6. Moose, it's pretty much across the street from Lemeac.
  7. I would think that KK uses trans oils for their machine to keep the process clean and stable. Krispy's ceo is also under several very serious SEC investigations, badly reported franchise buy backs, Sarbayn's Oxley defaults, profit transfer to boost internal bonus (a la Nortel). That stock as gone form champion to big looser. Woudln't be suprised if the empire falls alltogether. They have already defaulted their credit, ousted the CEO (great way to run from SEC) and shafted 25% of corporate work force, also sold the corporate jet...
  8. Thank you onion breath for keeping this thread real... Lot's of weird statement on this thread... Not sure about point 8 though. It's my belief that Nouveau's wild salmon is Alaska caught, which is open all year around. I have seen very lean fish under that moniker in the store. However, I will agree to have purchased a faily big variation of the wild vesion in the past. Maybe a question of streams... On the front this year, the fraser run will be completely closed down has an expected stock of 1,2 million fish have suddenly disappeared.
  9. Same here. Your points well taken, except on that dot com thing. I don't know how old you are but economic recession ? Montreal has never been as vibrant. As far as the inuendo thing, spare me. I absolutely did not want to associate these comments to MTL. But I've seen that street change on a daily basis for the last 20 years. I remember snorting pounds of coke with club owner's that are now restaurant owners who never once had a major bank loan. I know folks who's world suddenly collapse because their so called investor boyfriends (quote ACTIONNAIRES unquote) had to make a short cut to jail before coming home for dinner... I'm not complaining. The city wouldn't exist without these folks and I don't see them any worst than the BOD of Nortel for example. But for the love of god, give me a break, I don't play violin. I'm really bad at it, versus others. Another point I want to make, the city is so dirty, it's amazing, it's beyond me, it's like Montrealers have special eyes or some kind of system to negate all the trash on the street. I write about it because it is especially noticeable in that sherbrooke to Pine stretch, mind boggling how getto the street has become.
  10. ooohhh, you are going to have some very long snakes by the end of the month.
  11. "how could you be so stupid as to wish harm to a few young men, getting in debt to start a new project on a hard street with lots of competition" cause god knows, that street is littered with old fahion, hard earned and unquestionable investments...
  12. Just a quick comment here. Market veggies and garden veggies have different tastes for many reasons. First of all, many are grown under Sodium lights in casings containing almost no organic entities or simply a Ph balanced moss support so it tends to be blander. The same can be applied to hydroponic growth. The idea here is that producers must create growth (output) with as less input as possible in the fastest time to make money... simple concept. Reguarding Arugula, again, technically speaking, cold grown arugula will have a lot less pepery taste than summer grown arugula. Although the production practices also create a weaker tasting roquette, it is mostly the temperature at which it is grown that is the biggest factor. Arugula should be your first and last series of crop (slightly before winter nitrogen crop) In May and in Late August. The heat of summer will give it a stronger tatse and make it seed too fast. The same rule is applied to Rapini's, in some cases they don't even grow in the summer. Finally, the Montreal Melon. It is not easy to grow for multiple reasons that are beyon your control. The first being that the seeds have not been fully stabilised genetically yet. Many seeds still grow oblong fruits or unmusked fruits... So it's really a gamble, none withstanding the fact that if you are not facing full sun and have a fairly cold spring like last year, a two feet ditch of fresh manure and plenty of water, it will not rippen properly. A heat dome over the plants is almost required. For that reason, I have turned to other melons. If you have the time though, the one fruit that rippened out of twelve is worth the wait. However, you'll find some very good alternative melon types at solana seeds for example.
  13. Let's keep this one up, anyone spotting meyer please butt in. This is a Citrus month for me and I want to score them.
  14. Don't trust Moose, this man will create mahem all over egullet. I warned everyone here. Thanks for the heads up Az, I'll have to check it out. I take it from your description that the report I was given at BU was a bit off, it's much more like Cube was/is ? What's the ambiance like ?
  15. Toto2, I think it was a one off thing. It was a total crepe bretonne granny look, not the granola thing. Must of been a one off. I must admit I don't go in that store too much.
  16. Carswell, I meant to say that whichever lady, sheèll get the job done but I feel sorry for the poor lad. Have you ever heard her deal with her distributors on the phone on Dante, yowzer... a walking curse ! (not a major issue but quite shocking at first).
  17. I think that there is still a need for a small general store like at Atwater missing at JT. One stop shop where guys like René have chocolate, seasoning, truffles, pasta, all sorts of stuff. I had to run all over the place to get Mirin at JT. And the Marché de Saveur, can we please give up the 'la belle fermière' look of the staff... That is the image of the oppressed Quebecois, pure Folklore, nothing to do with the pride of the products there. Young aggressive farmers and producers don't where furry hats anymore...
  18. Les deux madames de Dante will start cracking their whips.
  19. The food was perfectly prepared at Aix, nothing was mind blowing but I rarely had such perfectly seasoned, cooked dish in a long time. Simple and elegant. I had seabass, she had braised lamb, the broths, spritzels, finger potatoes, baby carrots were really all good. I can't comment on price, I did not see the bill. The wine list could be more intricate. Lots of christmas office parties everywhere in Montreal.
  20. Think 50% Cube and 50% Pied de cochon, this is how it was explained to me while I barely kept focus after an ambitious friday evening at BU.
  21. I had lunch there on Friday and Breaky on Sunday. I tell you, even if my head was still in the clouds on Sunday morning, that food was just amazing. The fried black beans, the eggs, the big bacon and the dark sauce, hello ! What a great little spot.
  22. One is really the ultimate terroir study, laurie raphael is very intricate, the chef is a star and the site is posh, albeit old school, but multicourse. Graffiti is more of a nieghborhood resto, food is great, less expensive, larger plates, you can crawl to neighboring pubs (which is not the case at Laurie). In my opinion, Le Champlain would have been the post card perfect new year's eve (you basically enter a old continent royal room). I'm there this week, I'll see if new years parties are popping up.
  23. same here, what a joke. I cross the line no probs. One thing that amazes me is just how pleasant and knowledgable the replacement staff is, wow... The fat lazy boy in Saint-Bruno never cared to give me the time of day in the 15 years that I have been there... he sure doesn't gain my respect today. Why is it, that a "cadre" working overtime can deal with customers 3 times better than the best unionised sommelier ?
  24. You are actually in one of the newest up and coming area of Quebec, St-Rock. Basically in the port. Great spot but you do have to climb up to make it to the more traditionnal area. (A great jog is through Dalhousie, up the Cote Royal and down Grande allee and back or loop down through Les Champs de Bataille- 7K). My suggestions: Utopie, voted one of Canada's best by En route magazine, few blocks away from your hotel. Yuzu sushi bar (but not really sushi traditionnal), rue de l'eglise, close to you also. Toast !, rue du Saut au matelot. Feast for your eyes in many ways. Also very close by. Any other suggestions would be classics that the Auberge would suggest: Saint-Amour Laurie Raphael Cafe du Monde (brunch or breaky, not always solid, only bistro food) Champlain Bastille Bauhaud Guido le Gourmet Graffiti Cafe Kriegof (for a proper coffee and the organic toulouse, also bistro, nothing schmancy there). Steak house=Charbon in the train station. I like to have a beer at INOX for the cool music and play pool at Edgar pool hall where you can mix pool with a couscouse.
  25. oh, Paul Kahan will be here... I was just there two weeks ago, the new wine bar out there is really sharp. What about Bayless ? Shawn McClean (we all know were he would take over).
