  1. I meant to say...think it is called Al Richards or Al Richardsons.
  2. Surprising, there is a pretty decent store in Bayonne . This it is called Al Richards. The chocolate is pretty good. Not EURO grade but quite decent. I think it is somewhat of a Bayonne landmark. Very nice people.
  3. I was wondering if there are many restaurants in New Jersey that carry menus , that do not show prices. If you want to invite someone to a fancy dinner but know they will be intimidated by the high prices, what do you do? I know I read about such menus but haven't seen any in New Jersey. Curious.
  4. I'll second Ralph's in Nutley. One of the best in the State. Nicest people, too. Have been going there for 40 years or more.

    Burger Club

I can't read through all of the postings but has anyone mentioned The Prime Burger, next to Saint Pat's. Good burgers but very small. Just curious if anyone referenced it. The seating is the best part.
  6. When I was in Sicily last year, many of the restaurants offered a kir or a glass of champagne when we sat down. By the end of the trip, I became disappointed when we weren't offered this. Glad to see this catching on.
  7. You just made my mouth water. Saturday afternoon and I am not too too far drom Epernay. I agree 100 % with your rave reviews, however, the last time I was there, the waitress discouraged me from getting the mussels as an entree because the dish was so plentiful. Anyway, think we had the duck, which was tasty. Now I have to have mussels and a good glass or two of wine.
  8. Go for a burger in Cape May at The Ugly Mug. They have what is called their Seafood Burger, which a burger, topped with shrimp and swiss cheese. Might not sound that great but it is. On days like this, it's great with a hot spiked apple cider, another one of their specialties.
  9. I am interested to hear, too. Having spent quite some time in Alaska, outside of Denali, bear was the least favorable meat to eat. On those rare occasions when a bear would come too close to a house or would constantly harrass people or a community, people would hate the thought of killing the bear because it was so inedible and would constitute a senseless kill . They had to kill the bear for safety and did ultimately freeze the meat which ended up to be their least favorite meal(s) of the winter. I would still like to hear how you prepare it and how it tasted. Do they ever serve it in restaurants in the tri-state area?
  10. First, happy New Year everyone ! Has anyone eaten at the Top Notch restaurant in Montclair on Bloomfielf Ave across from the Starbucks? Was going food shopping yesterday and parked in front of the place and glanced at the menu. Spotted a large selection of German dishes. How are they? I love German food but am spoiled by the Black Forest Inn in Stanhope. The Triangle Hofbrau is fun and decent, but nothing for me to write home about. I'd love to hear any comments because this would be great for me in terms of location. Thanks, all.
  11. I heard that PETA is putting out a guide on fur free restaurants. Will provide the details when they surface.
  12. Cooking a ham this Thanksgiving. Trying to avoid too many leftovers. Cooking the ham ala Aretha Franklin with a Doctor Pepper marinade/glaze. I just read that chestnuts are very very healthy for you. Supposedly an excellent source of protein, better than eggs? Can anyone confirm that? Happy Thanksgiving , all!
  13. I have never experienced a tasting menu but would be intrigued if someone could clear up two points: What if they present you with food items you do not like at all? I realize that the portions are "tasting" portions, however, it still sounds like a lot of food? Is it?
  14. Follow-up to Rosies review . Microwaved foods in restaurants. I have often wondered about entrees or meals served which seemed microwaved? How can you tell? I often wonder when the food is too too hot and stays hot for a long time. How do others determine if a food is microwaved? Aside from meats, which are easy to spot.
  15. That place was = my SUBWAY diet. We would walk there from the other end of town, have an excellent meal, and then walk back. I was losing weight doing this. Makes me mad.
  16. There is a blurb on NEWS12.com so there might be some truth to this. Living in Nutley, I went here often. If it is true, what a bummmer all around.
  17. Has anyone heard any news that this restaurant had a fire last night or this morning? Would be a terrible loss. I don't know how to confirm this being in Manhattan right now. thanks
  18. Speaking of hot pastrami on rye...I find that there is no consistancy in the 1000 Island or Russian dressing they offer. My first question : What is the difference? Second: Which is more common (provided you are not having mustard and opting to go this route) ? Third: What are they made of? Last: Why do they taste so drastically different in most restaurants? I work in Lower Manhattan and find them awful in all of the delis down here. Then again, most of these places are hardly delis. Sorry for the dumb questions, but maybe if I knew what I wanted , I wouldn't have to toss so many out because the dressing tasted so bad. Thanks in advance!
  19. Bum Rodgers , just outside of Island Beach State Park is a lot of fun. Funny, no matter the season or time of day, you could always find parking. They used to make pretty decent bloody Mary's. Last one I had there was five years ago. I used to go there a lot after high school. I attended Admiral Farragut in Toms River and was often on the bay.
  20. Wasn't offended at all . I was trying to be sarcastic and continue on with Smiles and one more comment but closed a window instead of minimizing it....boy...things can sure get hairy when one doesn't finish his sentence.... sorry
  21. Now I really won't be able to attend any egullet functions with a comment like that one .....at least you have hair..... sorry you think that way

    FASCINO

I ate here on Saturday , as well. Very nice place. Great food. Beautiful decor. Decent service, a bit hectic environment. Will try to go mid-week, when they are less overwhelmed.
  23. I have similar tastes when it comes to bagels and cannot seem to find any good ones in Essex county or in Lower Manhattan, where I work. I also find it very frustrating when I order a poppy seed bagel, which has a light coating of poppy seeds. I would love to find poppy seeded bagels, drenched with poppy seeds. Also...given that the summer has been a tad humid, where are those crispy ones hiding?
  24. Had dinner on Saturday night at Papillion in Nutley. Quaint restaurant in Nutley on Passaic Ave. We all has St Peter's fish, which was a type of lemon sole, with a black olive salsa on top. Fish was cooked perfectly. Grilled eggplant and horse radish mashed potatoes accompanied the meal. We had a bottle of Pinot Griggio and a bottle od sparkling water. Bill came to $105.00 with tip. Coffee and desserts looked excellent, but we were going home for coffee and birthday cake. The place was full at 7 p.m. on Saturday, a good sign for the summer and the location. I would definately return sometime in the winter, when the weather was cooler. This is the second restaurant in Nutley, which has opened in an old barber shop location. Other one that I know of is Petite Cafe, which was once a hair salon.
  25. If you are ever down near Cape May and Wildwood, try the Rio Grande diner. Always great for breakfasts! You might say, why eat at a diner, when in Cape May? Answer: $$$$$$$$$$. A good diner breakfast will hold you until dinner. Used to go to the Tick Tock but find the service to be poor. They know they have a solid business, so they don't care how they treat you. Turkey clubs, BLT's breakfast foods and Grilled Cheese!
