  3. i have guests coming in to town for the weekend and they want to go out on saturday night for dinner. we will be going to ssam bar on friday night. we are not picky eaters and enjoy everything. we like both beer and wine.(we are not doing grand sichuan this time) this is adapted from an email they sent me. Looking for a place to eat on saturday night for two and wanted to make a reservation if necessary. We are thinking about bar/pub/casual places owned or operated by some of our favorite celeb chefs. Thinking craftbar type places, maybe mario's pizza place. also heard of the spotted pig and that looks interesting (http://thespottedpig.com/). they dont need to be owned by a famous person, just thinking that type of grub. any suggestions?

  7. I hope everything goes well. For lunches in that area i would suggest the jamaica ladies truck located on 71st and york, right next to the duane reade pharmacy. I love her oxtail with rice and collard greens for the sides. if for some reason that doesn't work, here are just a few other places in the neighborhood for pizza john's on 64th between york and 1st patsy's at the corner of 2nd 69th pizza for delivery or slices pizza park on 1st between 66th and 67th, there is also a bagel place right next door for coffe and baked goods le pain quotidien on 1st between 68th and 69th matsu sushi does some crazy rolls, i like the manhattan roll and valentine's roll there. 70th between 1st and york
  8. I usually hit warehouse liquors before going over to Astor. last week warehouse had rittenhouse rye and apry while astor did not have them in stock. I have also found both of thos items at Mr. wright's(UES). Kalustyan's does have a very wide variety of bitters in stock. I have been to mud puddle books and bought bitters there and at better prices than kalustyan's. astor was selling some bitters last week when i was there. i forget which brand.
  9. We ate the blowfish and we all lived happily ever after.
  10. I just bought some blowfish at Agata&V. because they looked great. I have never eaten or cooked these fish. The 2 people that i'm going to be serving these to are not excited by eating blowfish due to the poisin threat. anyone cooked or eaten these fish? is what is available in NYC really blowfish? google says one must be a trained professional to serve blowfish
  11. I too have been working on some new techniques to impart flavors in to spirits. Some friends and I have been pulling flavored air through various liquids with decent results in diluted gin and vodka. The liqueurs are generally too sugarey and burn too easily. Anything over 30% alcohol can get dangerous and ignite. Our best trials have been with regular red label smirnoff (80 proof) mixed with equal amounts of brita filtered tap water.
  12. Astor Place(NYC) had the Rittenhouse BIB for $14.99 last week, in store only with their card. I don't know if it is still on sale.
  13. I strongly suggest a stop in to Pegu Club for excellent cocktails.
  14. There is already a thread for best greek food in Astoria so, yes, please keep it in Manhattan. This comment made me curious about Manhattan.
  15. Where would one go for the best greek food in Manhattan? and any specific dish that shouldn't be missed?
  16. i would dive to the bottom and never come up.
  17. I would suggest Pegu club if the group is going to hop in a cab(or cabs). I haven't been turned away yet at Pegu.
  18. ? OK, going to the well here again. Saturday lunch/brunch in the Madison Square Park vicinity with the kids again. Looking at Blue Smoke but would like some other reccommendations for the area. Just needs to be kid friendly(2 and 5 year old) and can be pizza, street food or just about anything, but no shake shack. cliff notes -kid friendly -madison square park area -saturday lunch
  19. to support the kalustyan report Kalustyan's carries Fee Brother's bitters, regan's orange and peychaud's.
  20. Thank you both for the help. We went to Dinosaur BBQ and had a great lunch. the ribs and brisket were fantastic. The bus stopped at the doll factory about 50 yards from the restaurant.
  21. I'm going to be taking one of those double decker buses this week(grayline uptown loop). We want to spend most of our time in Harlem(Apollo theater) and need some ideas on where to eat lunch. we have 2 obstacles one person does not eat red meat and we have kids with us a 2 and a 5 year old. cliff notes lunch harlem no red meat kid freindly yes, i will be one of those tourists on the big red bus.

  23. My once a month visit to chinatown usually has me stopping at the same places for shopping. - dynasty(hong kong?) on elizabeth - kam man on canal for pocky and milk tea. the prices here seem to be higher than other places in chinatown - tokyo mart on mulberry for japanese groceries. cheap prices in general - bankok center grocery on mosco for thai groceries(fresh kaffir lime leaves). http://www.bangkokcentergrocery.com/ - di palo at grand and mott for italian cheese - deluxe food market on elizabeth and on mott, it connects mott and elizabeth for fish i have no favorite monger, i only buy if something looks really great and fresh for produce i stop at the produce markets on mott on my way to di palo
