UPdate.../ the weather has sucked by far the worst ever ... rain has now turned a slow bloom into a hazard of molds... like mildew...etc...it's been extremely hard to use heavy tractors in the vineyard... we have resorted to a few good horses to do the job... it has not been fun... we need sun or nitrogen deficiencies will make for a even more challenging season... as the vines just can't take it up via the wet root system... at this point I am very disgusted... optimistic, only because the Ark is almost finished... Cheers...

I like to drink around the world...not be stuck on one style of wine... 25,000 styles/labels of great wines that I know of and counting 10,000 kinds of grapes... to be stuck with one style would be as if I was anesthetized... not to say you are wrong... if you are happy that's all that really matters... but for myself give me styles and let me sip the ends of the globe looking for them...coy , bold, elusive, etc... Cheers !!!

I will be working in a wine retail shop, but I'm very interested in becoming a sommelier in a restaurant. Thanks! Well the best of luck... then again you don't need luck if you make your own... you could come to have a priori wine knowledge Click On Me this you can do through learning if you want to jump start the learning... the OCW 3rd edition by Jancis Robinson is a very good place to start... it's the everything you need to know about wine...I have always toted this big @ss book around... you must come also to understand the more you know about wine... the more you will want to know... it's endless...I always say it takes lifetimes to just learn one Region... go to trade shows and taste as many wines as you can... spit don't drink have a clear head... talk to wine-makers ask questions... anyone who treats you rude just move on ... you will always find a kind person who will want to educate ... never take anyones word as the truth... never take any article as the law... in this wine business you will find a study pro and one con... every time... my best advice is when working in a retail environment ask the client to explain the wine if you have not tried it... they will talk about wine if they are a wine geek... if not move on... if you put in the time in 10,000 hours you will become an expert in anything... the key is put in the time... remember too much pushed in will result in not much remembered... go back always... Just the other day I had to re study something I had studied twice before ... this time I finally got it... no shame is saying I don't know... never give out bad information... it will bite you hard in the end... you know that place you sit on...lol/... relax enjoy in the wine business it's most definitely the journey not the destination that is worth more... Cheers !!! wish you all the very best...

TN: Earthquake Zinfandel 2008 Michael-David Vineyards Well first off it's no 2007 then again what wine is... I could pick this one wine out of the best lineup you can offer...if you think you have one just like it... please do tell I would love to buy it and taste it... The distinctive indigo black ink color is the tell of good things to come in this wine... the signature nose... black liquorice, tar, vanilla, French almond toast, cassis, black currant, menthol ... the mouthfeel is creamy not thick like the 2007, but very round fruit up front loaded with what I call that one of a kind taste that only to me Earthquake delivers year in and out... the tastes of the nose dance in your mouth...coffee (and I am not a fan of coffee drink, but love the smell ) French vanilla beans, coffee beans, dark chocolate beans roll around like heaven...black liquorice all coming together for a orgy in your mouth...the hang time is eternal ... then you have to take another sip... the type of wine for me that one has over a very long time frame once you pop the cork... drink now 2011 // 2017 score 88/89 around $20.00 the best $20 you can spend IMVHO.... Cheers !!!

A titan wine business is made off of the ego not the taste of Wine...rant... below is the link... Click On Me Wine -- it's all in your head 60% of the time or more you can't tell an expensive bottle from an inexpensive one... Many of us are fools for seeking expensive brands ? For all the wrong reasons... I have been to tastings where I have tasted wines that cost an exorbitant amount of money...leaving out the regions and producers because I am not one to bash specifics today... what I have learned from personal experience is that for fermented grape juice costing a few bucks in the bottle... people sure do have a bent value system when it comes to making a decision on purchasing wine...Understanding ego plays first...Understanding some people have more money than brains... Understanding people can vote with their money, because it's a freedom to do so...this makes markets and many rich ... With the understanding that the new bottle chasers looking for trophy wines for status have no clue what the hell they are drinking is disturbing on many levels... the biggest...most really would not know a good bulk wine (very low dollars) from one that cost 1000 times that of the bulk wine... this leave me to conclude that wine is a commodity, always has been...commodities run bubbles, manias all throughout history...so too has wine...thus the greater fool theory applies...yes we often act like fools... myself included... spending absurd amounts on wine when the pleasure is in the brand not the wine... the pleasure is in the status of pouring the brand ... not in the taste of the wine... the real irony is the amount of money people make trading , selling the commodity wine... in this a titan business is made off of ego not taste... wine is liquid gold...we the victims...play the greater fool...due to ego... rant over...

well it that time of year when the bottling is getting finished... the winter this year has been cold ... but not instant cold from a high temp thus the vines seemed to be acclimated to the cold very well... last night we got down to -1 F ... I have been pruning the vines and need it to warm up just a bit more... today is a great day in the vineyard... hope to have the pruning done by mid march... looking forward to another vintage... a winemakers life is measured in vintages... with over 10 vintages commercial on my own behind me I still have many more be it G-d's will ahead of me... been making wine since I was a child learning the family methods... it's good to keep on keeping on... Cheers !!!

Does that sense of place in a wine "terroir"- should it included the attitude of the wine-maker and grower due to Sensitive crystalization of Wine ??? Yes No I am not sure I don't care Other I can prove to you that water that had a ZEN monk meditate upon changes in crystallography or crystal structure... just see the movie "What the Bleep do we Know" Click On Me this is a fact...live with it ... science proved it's true... Sensitive crystalization of Wine Click On Me I can also explain that since wine is 85% water that if you have a wine-maker and grower who mediates and prays during the vintage the wine will demonstrate different crystalline physiological properties... just ask Randall Grahm... see the above reference... So the question is should this the grower and the wine-maker be considered a part of terroir... I say absolutely !!! For it's as important as the soil...
