  1. Had a nice dinner at Jean Claude down on Sulivan st. Sunday night. I had the Goat cheese salad with olive vinaigrette followed by skate. My wife had seared scallops salad and a nice piece of cod as an entree. We had a bottle of Rhone, 2 tea's and a tart tatin $103 for 2 people...not bad!

  2. A few years back I enjoyed a Truffle omelet at the Hotel Dupont in Caussade (25 Rue des Recollets) 63 65 05 00. We had a group of 20 people. The omelets were about 2 feet long and came out on huge oval platters. First we had a salad of Mache with thinly sliced "cured" foie gras with shaved truffles. I don't remember the dessert but I do recall a walnut flavored after dinner drink (but I don't remember much else after that!)

  3. A pet peeve of mine is when the waiter/waitress opens the wine, gives the first sip to the "wine host" and then upon approval of the wine, they almost fill the glass to the top! Why does this happen so often!? What happened to staff training?!

Another one is when they hover around the table and every time you take a sip they re-pour. I usually (and politely) say : Oh, thats OK, we like to pour our own wine. This usually does the trick. What do you do?

  4. We have a bottle every night with dinner. I have a glass waiting on the table for my wife when she walks in the door. Every night she has to try to ID the wine, otherwise I won't tell her what it is. She is quite good at picking wines, which leads to another subject : Is the female pallate better than a males?? I've heard this in the past.

  5. Sadly, winesonoma, I agree with you 100%. I grew up on the Island and it is a culinary wasteland. Mirabelle in St. James is one of the few "bright spots" I can think of. I'm sure there are other places, but you are pretty much on the money.

  6. I do apologize if my comment was too gruff. I really haven't been to Patchouge in quite a while. I really don't know of anywhere that is woth mentioning for dinner in the area. Years ago the South Shore restaurant on the corner of Rte. 112 and Lincoln (just north of Sunrise hwy) was one of THE places to eat on the Island. I hear it's still there, but of course under different ownership. There was a brew pub in town a few years ago (brickhouse?) Good luck and let me know of your success.

  7. Well, I was there last week and they do not sell slices (I asked) The "counter" section of the restaurant is in a different room than the dining room section of the restaurant. They are joined by a doorway that makes it look like they could have been seperate stores at on time. Maybe that explains the 26-28 address. I think I had read somewhere else that they may have sold slices from Joes at one time.

  8. A few years back on a trip to France (about 20 of us) we were unloading the bus, putting all of the luggage on the curb. The last piece of luggage was a Jeraboam of Chateau Soutard. Someone bumped the first piece of luggage, and they all started to fall....like a row of dominos......the last piece to fall, at the end of the line was the Soutard....it was by far the most expensive puddle I've ever seen, flowing through the parking lot and into the sewer. It was a very somber evening.

  9. It's at 28 Carmine, just south of Bleeker. There was a review of it on the Gothamist website last week. We decided to take a walk past the place today, and while we were outside looking at the menu the owner stepped out and convinced us to come in. I'm glad he did, over dinner tonight my wife was still talking about the place. The owners really can't be more than 30ish were gracious and very excited about what they do.

  10. I finally decided to take the plunge and purchase a cooler unit. I'm looking for something to hold about 200 bottles. The Wine Enthusiast is only about 20 miles from my home, but I think they only stoch Eurocave.(which I'm sure is fine)

Does anyone own a unit or have experience with a model they would reccomend?
