  1. i used to live in east hampton, then westhampton. In westhampton beach you can find Starr Bogg's, he is a friend of my dads and a great chef. In hampton bays theres a place called Indian Cove which my dad used to own, last time i was by there it looked like it was doing well, has a great deck. Donno how great the meal would be though, worth a shot at least. Ill ask my dad and get back on this one. B
  2. not sure exactly, but i think alot of hawaiian food is sorta asian related, IE spam nigiri/spam sushi etc. Alot of white rice and veggies and such. I know there is a a difference though, manapua made in hawaii is BIG, something like the size of a softball, a good inch or more of soft sticky steamed dumpling around a sweet tender red pork filling. I havent been back to hawaii in 13 years but i can still taste manapua if i think about it. b
  3. sorry for the second thread but this seemed obscure enough to deserve its own topic. I grew up eating manapua/cha siu bau in hawaii and it has to be one of my favorite food items ever. Anyone know where to get a good on in NYC? thanks B

    Beer Glassware

heh, on frozen mugs, if im forced to drink any macro lager id rather have it in a nice frosty glass so that i dont notice how bad it is...give me any decent beer and by all means a cold rinsed glass is perfect. One of the best beer experiences i had was in montreal at this great bar where they served everything in the branded glasses, i orded a hoegaarden and it came in the huge 22oz hoegaarden glass. Oh man i love that glass, you feel like a viking or something when you drink out of it, the glass alone must weigh 2lbs. http://www.globalbeer.com/Merchant2/mercha...Product_Count=4 http://www.globalbeer.com/Merchant2/mercha...&Store_Code=GBN this place has a great selection of beer glasses, check out their beer glass sets too. enjoy Brendan
  5. hey, just wondering, did everyone here use organix unwaxed lemons? Or do waxed lemons work? I went to the grocery store today to get some organic lemons and they were 6$ for three!! $24 for a dozen!? yikes. Anyway...just wondering what my options are. thanks B
  6. hah, funny you mentioned Georgia Moon mbanu. I noticed te liqour store around the corner from me stocks it, is it worth picking up a bottle just to try? Would it be mixable? or not worth it? I hadnt seen it befor and could help but laugh at the "bottling." for anyone who hasnt seen it, it comes in this... http://www.sixthseal.com/images/shine_on_g...orn_whiskey.jpg peace, B
  7. hey doc, thanks for the suggestions i hit them both up tonight. Went to davidsons for dinner and a beer, tried the "Dacker" very malty with some sweeteness, decent overall. Then headed to coopers and shared a ice cream float with my girl. Grabbed a growler of their maibock to bring home. will get back to you after alittle testing this week :-) thanks for the suggestions Brendan
  8. ah rebecca, the whole time i was in florida i kept meaning to make it to Churchills but never got around to it, now i really feel like a fool! oh well, im down there fairly regularly so i will be SURE to stop in next time im down there. B
  9. meh this is late...but for you egulleters here it is......its not really our kind of bar. not cocktails or anything fancy, but as far as being its own world it is pretty incredible. its in Hollywood Florida and its called Le Tub. It was a place for friends and family until GQ named it the best burger in america, since then they have fought tooth and nail to go against the grain and not become a tourist place. No matter how long the wait is the guy at the front door tells you an hour and a half (even if its 20 minutes), they do this because half the tourists turn around and leave, sometimes it is an hour but thats easy time spent at Le Tub. They are not always the nicest (at first) and if you complain about the service your likely to wait two hours instead of one. But i know one thing, there is nothing more sublime on this planet than sitting at the bar at Le Tub, sipping a rum runner or bloody marry, and waiting for the best burger and fries ive ever had, hands down. There is no AC, the wood is dark and worn, the decorations are tacky but genuine. Fishing nets, stuffed fish, crazy signs, and toilets as planters all strewn throughout, collected over its 30 years. The image has been imitated by thousands of fish and chips places always leaving you with a bad taste in your mouth, servers with fake sailor hats, or anchors sewn on their shirts....at Le Tub your lucky if your server isnt half in the bag by lunch time. Dont go at 6:30 or 7, their shift change is at 7 and you will be lucky if the dinner shift shows up on time, hopefully the next chef makes it in. Im kind of glad i missed the deadline for this article cause had it made it, i might have actually felt bad, like i was sharing a secret that shouldnt be shared. If anyone from egulleters makes it there, let me know what you thought of it. It is the one place i will miss most after moving back from florida to NY. Remember...if you find your way to Le Tub, its cash only!!! and they have no ATM :-) peace, B
  10. any info would be great. thanks brendan

  13. heh, i just noticed this thread (as i sit here sipping an iced latte i made with my aeropress) First...the aeropress thread at coffee geek is the the be all and end all to aeropress discussion. IF you have any questions about what it can do or how to do something it is ALL in that thread somewhere. The inventor himself has replied to every question and anyone who needed help. I use my aeropress a bit different than most coffee lovers i think, im not so much one for straight espresso or black coffee, hopefully my pallet will start to develop a taste for straight coffee i donno. My standard nightly drink with the aeropress is an espresso blend made to the "2" mark on the aeropress. 2 scoops of espresso ground coffee 170 degree water to the "2" stir for 10 seconds, wait 5, press for 15-20. a teaspoon of sugar, ice, and then milk that ive frothed with a simple Bodem manual frother. Its a thick creamy iced latte and you can make as light or as dark as you like. Has a inch or so of frothed, almost lightly whipped milk floating on top, and everyone that tries one loves it. Its a great little tool for experimenting. Built well and very easy to maintain. B
  14. hey cool to see two people near where i live (sorta, ill be in aventura for 2 more weeks befor i go back to NY) anyway, i frequent the Whole Foods for beer around here. Microman is a great distributor and where they get 90% of their stock. In the last week i had- Rogue Morimoto Imperial pilsner - expecting this to be a beer that was light and made for fish it was definatly not. Strong with alot of bite upfront, very smooth on the tongue, hoppy throughout, a bit of citrus. One of the most beautiful bottles ive seen, really great. http://beeradvocate.com/im/beers/12690.jpg Lamar st. Pale ale- Thin drinkable ale, mediocre at best, good for watching a game or laying out in the sun. A dark hefe, but the name i cant remember right now. Whole foods just got a bunch of new stuff, the first thing i grabbed was a St. Peters English Ale, and St. Peter's Golden Ale. HAve just tried the English Ale so far, A bit bitter at first, as my pallet warmed up to it was not as pronounced. Decent english ale all around. Also comes in a great green pint bottle that i think would be cool for bar infusions and trying small batches of infusions. A few weeks ago i tried the Duchesse de Bourgogne, what a cool beer. Best i think in a wineglass or some other petit stemware. Sour and fruity but complex and "grown up" at the same time. Its like the sophisticated cusin to the Lindemans lambics. thats about it as of late. Brendan
  15. Ali, its an interesting recipe, i just wonder, do you remove the seeds from the bird peppers. a thai bird pepper has the same skovel rating as a habanero, i can imagine that after enjoying your nice refreshing lemongrass and lime cocktail, taking a bite of one of those peppers would be far to strong compared to the drink. It would actually i think be a cool garnish to lay across the top of a tequila shot or something. something with tequila (i guess, even though its a thai pepper, who would know :-) ) If it were me, id make a slice down the pepper and use a little tool to strip the seeds out, tehn candy it. it would probably be more palatable this way. B
  16. A friend of mine, the head bartender from southern wine and spirits was lucky enough to be a judge for this event. Here are the results. http://ministryofrum.com/iscsc.htm might give some people an idea what they want to buy next, or things they should try. peace, B
