Hummus, guacamole and pasta sauce. Home made guacamole vs store bought ...NO CONTEST! I win! It's much more vibrant and flavourfull when I make it versus buying from the deli. I don't know what they put in it...but there's always some weird aftertaste. Same goes with hummus. I can't go back. The fact that I can make twice as much for the same cost is very fulfilling as well.

Here is more information about the cbc Chef's Picks Series. There is also a contest to win The Ultimate Dining Out Vancouver prize - dinner for two at every restaurant featured [This includes the chef's restaurants, as well as the places they have recommended!]

I made a few of my reservations through opentable.com, thanks to the link from this post. As long as I get that confirmation email, my reservation is set in stone, right? Sometimes technology makes me nervous; was my reservation really made with the hostess? What will happen if I get there for my reservation and find out it's not there anymore? Food makes me nervous...

Just finished booking everything (finally). Thanks to Ling's post regarding West, we got reservations for the 25th! Hurray! I've always wanted to go there and now I finally can (and actually afford it). We also booked Chambar, Feenies and the Dockside Restaurant.

I have been to Gingeri twice-both times for dim sum. The food is very good, but price-wise - IT IS EXPENSIVE! I don't remember how much the dishes were (because I only go for dimsum with my family, and I never have to pay), but I remember dimsum for 7 people was over $200. We didn't even eat a whole lot. I think most of the asian families consider it a "higher class" restaurant, without the hustle and bustle of the carts?

I admit, I'm one of those tap water drinkers. But it's not because I don't enjoy wine (actually, I don't really care for the stuff, but I can appreciate it), it's because alcohol does terrible things to my stomach. So for those of us who cannot enjoy delicious BC VQA wine, how can we avoid the "oh my god what cheapskates, they're only drinking tap water" glances from the waitstaff? Short of ordering bottled water, that is. Do most of the restaurants have amazing non-alcoholic beverage pairings for their menus? ← Thanks for asking this question! I cannot drink alcohol (I get super sick after 1 sip of beer!!) so I usually ask for a pop or water-I feel because of the whole DineOut experience (which will be my first), I sure don't want to come off as a cheapie! Cranberry and club soda, please.

PMS: Tell it Like It Is. Your cravings, Babe (Part 1)
teamboom replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
Whenever Aunt Flow shows up, I get this incredible craving for all things beef. Especially steak and pho. YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMm......................... Rarely sweets, I'm more of a salty lil' lady when it comes to calming the waves; although, a cookie (or seven) never hurt me. -
Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 2)

Yesterday my boyfriend and I had lunch at Samurai on Davie. Their lunch bento box specials are such a great deal at $6.95 (I had salmon teriyaki, spicy agedashi tofu, rice, tempura, spicy tuna cone, salad, miso soup). Then I made a roast chicken with carrots and potatoes for dinner, complete with a baguette from GI. yumyum. -

My friend had her birthday party at Wild Rice, and whoever it was made her put a $200 cash deposit down. And she actually did it. I would never do that... -
Plus, making your own pasta and sauce is actually SUPER cheap!! (I should know, I am one of the said starving students). canned tomatoes, veggies, meat of your choice, some spices = huge pot that will last you one week. I agree with you, that home made is always best. I always find myself hesitating to go out for pasta, just because for 1/3 of the price I can make twice the amount.

Anton's?? If it is that place, personally I wouldn't reccomend it. The portions are huge, but it's all noodle and no sauce!! You can't eat it because it's so dry and you'll end up choking on your linguine.

I do enjoy Armacord in Yaletown. I went there for lunch with my aunt, my sister, and my boyfriend. I had a panini sandwich (which was delicious) and my boyfriend had a pasta of some sort (sorry this is so vague). We don't remember exactly what we had, but regardless - IT WAS DELICIOUS!!! I am always meaning to go back, but I'm broke. haha.

my mouth is watering already... nutella...carbs...yummmmmmmmmmmm

Oh, Gyoza King is NEVER settling. We always take that place quite seriously. If you ever see a little asian girl eating everything in site, you should say hello because it's probably me.

Thanks for all the hints! I've been actually DYING to check out chambar, and after browsing the chambar thread, I'm going to suggest that to my boyfriend. Hopefully he'll comply, if not...we'll probably end up at good ol' Guu (or Gyoza).

Hello!! I'm a new member here [i introduced myself to an almost dead thread (the where have you eaten recently thread)], so please be nice!! My boyfriend and I usually spend our Christmas Eve with his side of the family and then Christmas with my family (or vice versa), but this year his parents are going to Victoria to spend it with his stepfather's side of the family. My boyfriend doesn't like them, so he opted to stay in Vancouver with me. That means this year we will only have one turkey dinner, with my family. I have to work until 6pm on Christmas Eve, so I know that I won't feel like cooking at home. My question is, where should we go for dinner? I work on West 4th but we live in the West End. I sort of want to try some place new and yummy, but I'm very undecisive so I need some ideas (now)! Everything is pretty much a go! Not too expensive please!! Our usual outings for meals include Guu with Garlic (Rob's favourite), Gyoza King, Bin 941/942... We've never been to Hapa...how is it there? Food/price/atmosphere.... Thanks heaps!!

Hi! I'm brand-spankin new here (but you all probably knew that already). I absolutely love this forum, mainly because I love food and eating and cooking. But anyway... Last night my boyfriend and I had some take-out from Stepho's (cheap, fast, filling...and take out because who wants to stand in a line up when you live two blocks away?) On my Saturday shift at work, my co-worker and I decided to get some delivery from Papaya Hut at night. Cashew chicken, rice, pad thai!! yumm....the only downer? They didn't give us any cutlery, so we had to scrounge the office for some chopsticks. And Friday I was at my parent's house because I had to dogsit. Had some good ol' mom's homecooking (which I love). Rice, steamed chicken wings, duck wings (my favourite!!), and baby bokchoy.
