  1. That's a pretty broad and general statement to make, considering that there are many supermarkets that do their own baking on premesis. I find that many of the baked goods vary in quality from store to store. ← What supermarket bakes on premise in New Jersey?- maybe they bake from a Gold Medal Mix-but it's still a mix! Modern Baking magazine publishes a yearly list of supermarkets bake from scratch, mix or have them sent in frozen. There ain't too many-if any-on THAT list that are baking the real deal! They just can't afford to do it.
  2. I'm not knocking Wegman's -they're okay-but I have taught some of their bakery employees cake decorating. They did tell me most of the stuff comes in frozen and are"finished" with fruit and glaze on premises. They did tell me that was also the case with their birthday sheet cakes-they come in frozen (I think they said from Sara Lee-but I couldn't exactly remember) and that they come in sheets and rounds. So this group of employees wanted me to show them how to construct a "haunted house" (this was at halloween) out of these frozen sheets and rounds so that they can win a company sponsered contest. Mmm-yeah-I'm gonna show you how to do this -so that YOU can win the company contest and I'll be a distant memory while you're spending the bonus that you've won... Hey- I'm from New Jersey-whadda ya thinkin'-LOL!
  3. Wow-Hate to pull up an old post-but I've been working out of a restaurant for the past several years doing special occassion and wedding cakes ONLY. I'm in Freehold and I've looked for a place (as well as a few friends of mine with related interests) for a few years now. With real estate prices of $34. a square foot around Rt. 9-It's no wonder good bakeries aren't opening up! Gotta sell alot of petit fours to cover that kind of rent! Ugh! Looks like the majority of us in Monmouth County are going to be eating the sent-in frozen cakes from our supermarket chains. Palmas in Manalapan is just working out of their warehouse in Englishtown only-their rent on RT. 9 wasn't cost effective. Seems that's a growing trend in bakeries-just having a warehouse workspace.
