  1. I spent 2 summers in shanghai and was not impressed with the XLB. It is good, but it is just stylistically different. The XLB is America is better for purely economic reasons...why stay in china when you can migrate to america and make money? Shanghai Cafe has the best CRAB XLB. Joe's regular pork ones possibly better (just a matter a preference). and yea, YEAH's is good too. In queens Goodie's is good(donno if it still exists). But it was from that restaurant that the chef from Joe's Shanghai came (and opened the original Joe's in queens). This was some 10 years ago.
  2. You're talking about XLB? Try Shanghai Cafe or Joe' Shanghai.
  3. List and price would be amazing ← Had dinner there with 2 friends last night, basically got 2 15 piece specials. They had no kasugo I had... Toro Zuke Seared Salmon Aji red Snapper Scallop Octopus Seared Bearfish(?). I thought it was grunt fish but he said it wasn't. Abalone Botan Ebi Shiro Ebi Sayori Kohada Uni Ikura Mirgai Saba Kobe Beef I think it's safe teh say the variety is behind 15east and well behind Yasuda. The 15piece is a great deal, the problem is it leaves me craving more sushi but they dont' really have the variety for me to want 30 pieces. If I were paying ala carte prices I would rather go to 15 east/shimzu/yasuda.
  4. Candlelight Inn in Hartsdale for Wings Azuma Sushi in Hartsdale for Sushi Sushi Nanase in white plains for Japanese food/sushi
  5. It's been a while since I've gone...maybe a year now? I no longer remember which ramen I ordered but I was unimpressed. So unimpressed, I can't remember what it tasted like. Santouka on the other hand...mmmm.... Considering how relatively close the two are by car, I wouldn't bother with Batten. I don't understand why folks rave about it. It's just...ok to me. I must be missing something...ordering the wrong ramen bowl...something!?!? I can't wait to try Ippudo though! ← Yea right now I think I'd like santoka's broth with setagaya's noodles, that'd be my choice combo.

  7. Aight thanks, I'll check it out tomorrow. Santoka does not have red miso unless they define it as "spicy miso ramen". I stop by there once a week for grocery shopping. Any thoughts on Batten Ramen?
  8. Anyone know if anywhere in the tri-state area makes red miso ramen?
  9. To your original question, I'd call Ushiwakamaru (212) 228-4181 and ask if and when they serve Lobster sashi (JP shorthand). When they had the tanks, naturally they did it best. Kathryn, the tanks are gone with the renovation, now that's where the hostess stands and checks your jacket. Yasuda might occasionally have it, I can ask, but I would suspect so as he sources a lot of shellfish from LI Sound and Maine. Like blowfish (fugu), knowing how to properly clean and serve raw lobster is an advanced sushi art and probably requires a specific license in Japan, which is why I'd probably want to eat it from a Japanese sushi chef who has relocated here after a fair amount of training, before trying it at, say, Oriental Garden. That said, I have eaten a lot of weird shellfish in Chinese restaurants and in China but it's all been cooked. ← This is the wrong thread...but just got back from dinner @ ushi. 10 people, we all got the 15 piece special, most of us got two of them... Service at a table is beyond horrendous, I seriously don't think any place has ever given adequate sushi table service. I certainly have never experienced it. Personally I thought Ushi might be able to do it because they are so set with their 5 piece/tray serving style; but that didn't work out. Took 2 hours before we finished receiving our first 15 pieces each. IMO, sushi is really only for the bar and only for 2 people at a time. I don't even crave what I ate tonight and if that's all I knew sushi as, I wouldn't think nearly as much of it.
  10. Is that supposed to be regarded as some highly sought after quality in sashimi, or for that matter, any food? Is knowing your food is still writhing in front of you supposed to make it more tasty, wholesome, or just better? Maybe we should hack off a chicken leg and watch it shriek as we fry it limb. Good eats. I love meat, but stories of half fried, half alive carp, and lobster that still quivers while you eat it make me sweat with rage. Is it too much to ask that the animals that nourish us at least meet death with as little pain as possible? I'm sure someone will defend the practice by saying the lobster was dead already, and the quivering was just post-mortum muscle spasms. Whatever... ← While people may show off to their friends saying their food was alive...in the instance of lobster and other shellfish, it is actually worth something. The idea is that seafood goes bad extremely quickly, especially shellfish so being able to eat it right after it died does mean something.
  11. The place is overly trendy for my tastes and with trendiness comes a certain crowd. Personally, I just wanted a simple authentic japanese ramen spot. The majority were FOBBY asians, but when I say majority, i mean 51% as opposed to 90%. On the way out I was asked by several europeans on how the food was, and I said "The ramen wasn't bad" and they said "I don't like ramen"...so... I think that accurately describes the crowd.
  12. Went for dinner tonight. 2 hour wait from 7:30pm wasn't seated until 9:30. I enjoy both setagaya and ippudo's noodles better than Santoku, but Santoku's broth is better imo. Bottomline though, I can't see myself paying $13-$16 for a bowl of ramen when a seat at babbo isn't that far away.
  13. it's just one of those things, I don't understand what is unique about the city of buffalo. I personally thought that in the city of new york, people would have been able to copy and improve upon the original. Sadly it seems they can't even beat the suburbs.. Isn't that kind of pitiful?
  14. Also like to note that a group of my best friends went to buffalo for school and they all claim any regular joint there has better wings than Candlelight... Also Chuck's spring st cafe in princeton makes some great wings
  15. Candlelight is better than all the places in the city? that's sad to hear since I grew up eating candlelight and was hoping to have better wings in the city...
  16. Between the lines... and grrr...my friends planned to go today for lunch but I informed them how the soft opening was apparently only for the press...based on egullet info.
  17. Mitsuwa fish is good. Got extra Toro/Uni/Yellowtail from elsewhere.
  18. Yea part of my post was a self-reflection that I don't personally like Ramen as much as I thought.
  19. I've never enjoyed my ramen @ santoka and I didn't even know it was a "foodie" ramen place. I just assumed it was some cheap knockoff. To be honest though, the noodles have been chewey and my biggest issue is that I get a bowl so big that I stop enjoying it after the 3rd bite. Setagaya has been my most favorable ramen experience in the tristate area thus far, though I admit I had just finished with a night of drinking before my meal.

Love this place. Their molten chocolate cake and green tea tiramisu desserts are great too (They had these ~5 years ago, so before everyone started carrying them). Can't remember the last time I was dissappointed with a meal here.
  21. Paid a visit to Mitsuwa this weekend and they had a ton of good stuff. Tuna/Chutoro/Otoro then Bluefin Tuna/Chutoro/Otoro. Other fishes I remember seeing were salmon, mackerel, spanish mackerel, anago, unagi, kohada(wow!), and many others. Also picked up a decent Hangiri and made myself a nice sushi bfast.
  22. These donuts have a wonderfully light chewiness to them. They taste like something. KK donuts have no chew, and taste like sugar. Lots and lots of sugar. A krispy kreme, when hot, isn't bad, but doughnut plant donuts are leaps and bounds better. I would take a day old doughnut plant doughnut over a hot KK anyday... ← Paid a visit to the Donut Plant and have to say I was not let down; but I wasn't surprised either. I haven't had any donut for almost a year now, but from what I remember, the yeast donuts tasted exactly like a KK donut. That is, like a much fresher DD. Obviously KK can't compare with donut plants flavors and jelly, but the donuts weren't good enough for me to make a trip down unless it's a special occasion or to share them with friends who havent' tried them. Btw; I had a peanut flavored strawberry donut and a triple chocolate cake donut. Next tuesday we're having an office meeting so I might get up early to try them fresh and hot and get a box for my co-workers. Would give another evaluation if said event materializes.

A krispy kreme, when hot, isn't bad, but doughnut plant donuts are leaps and bounds better. I would take a day old doughnut plant doughnut over a hot KK anyday... ← That sounds fabulous, becuase that is exactly how I describe KK donuts in comparison to DD donuts and how I describe H&H bagels compared to normal bagels. I am so excited to make a visit.
  24. Are you referring to illicit substances?
  25. Are these donuts taht much better than Krispy Kreme? I guess i donno why I'm asking since I'm certianly going to find out for myself.
