  1. That's too bad about Blackbird. But, based on everything I've heard and read, the dish which disappointed does sound like an aberration. Do you think you'll give it another try? As for the sushi...just reading your notes put me in the mood for it. FWIW, I've heard that Heat is also a terrific place for sushi in Chicago. Have you been there? =R=

  4. Yes, very spring break-like in many ways... If you have the opportunity, I'd suggest hitting Taste during a weekday...either at lunch time or in the late afternoon. I'm honestly not sure about opening night, relative to other times. ...and please be sure to have a funnel cake for me =R=
  5. Yep, Northfield...although they do have other locations (one for sure in Naperville). Their Northfield location is directly below the desk I'm sitting at right now and I've never tried these... =R= You wrote that at 11:15 this morning. So, how did you like them?!? Didn't get down there today. Forgot about a lunch meeting we had scheduled. But...they are a definite for tomorrow! =R=

  17. Have you been to Les Nomades or onesixtyblue? I think they're both outstanding in the area of fine dining but it's been a few years since I've been to either. =R=
  18. Suzi, That really is amazing about Ambria. Sounds more like a pit crew than a wait staff. Or, maybe the mescalin affected your perceptions. As for books about the grocery industry, check out Food Politics by Marion Nestle. It won a Beard Award in 2003. =R=
  19. Ian, I sure hope your box included broccoli because the stuff we got from the market was fabulous. So too were the ribeyes from Heartland meats and the red bulb onions. Unfortunately, the cherries and strawberries deteriorated somewhat from the time I tasted them at the market on Saturday until the time we served them at dinner on Sunday. They were ok, but not even as good as some I'd purchased a few weeks ago at Costco Grilling the asparagus tonight. And fwiw, the organic greens from Nichols Farm/Evanston Farmers Market were to die for. My friend brought them over and I have never loved salad so. =R=

  22. BTW Tarka, Nichols Farm sells at both the CHiC (Cooking & Hospitality Institute of Chicago) Market--Chicago's only year-round market (Orleans & Chestnut) and at the Bucktown Market June 20 - October 24. Both are 'Sunday' markets. =R=

  24. I bought a couple of 16 oz. PET bottles of each, although I really prefer cans. Found them at Jewel, one of the 2 major grocery chains in the Chicago area. I though it was onteresting that the Pepsi Edge was given an in-store display (warm). I never saw the C2 equivalent, but they did have bottles of it in the single-bottle coolers near the registers. I'll do a side-by-side tonight. Talk about your cheap thrills... =R=
  25. Yes! I forgot about Poochie's. I think their burgers are fantastic--so were their hand-cut fries last time I was there. I've had their char-dog as well, but I'm not sure if I've ever had the Maxwell Street Polish...next time =R=
