  1. Thank you for the Guri Guri recipe. I am a bit skeptical as to whether it will turn out the same as the Tasaka's version but will try. I am thinking that the gravy on the Gravy Burger is more like classic brown gravy vs. teriaki. I'm visualizing the teriaki being a little too runny and besides, wouldn't that then be a "Teri Burger". Where would you draw the line? The kimcheeburger sounds good. Weren't we disscussing location a post or two back? Or do you make your own? Another item I can think of is Nori Chicken. Not too exciting, I know. And, I haven't found nori chicken over here yet that I really like (in part because I try to stay away from fried foods). However, there used to be this tiny Okazuya in Hilo on the street on the JC Penny's side of the old Hilo Mall (not Prince Kuhio) just before the bridge on the right side (sorry this sounds like a scavenger hunt). I believe there was a large Banyan tree and possibly a service station across the street. This must have been about 16 years ago so my memory of it is fairly vague. Anyway, I think about it to this day. PakePorkChop: My BI family still has to get Manapua, half-moon, pork hash, etc, etc. From Oahu. Manju and Anpan were popular items to take back as well.
  2. PakePorkChop: Yes, I realize that there usually is no simple answer. But I'd rather have an answer that I don't like and learn something than get no answer at all so I'm not afraid to ask questions! I will try to make it over to Club New Pattaya sometime soon. Thanks for the suggestion. skchai: Thanks for the reference to the tread on Keo's. I really must go there sometime. I'm one of those lazy people that just doesn't want to put forth the effort to go to Waikiki! And, I agree about MekongII. I was moderately dissappointed myself. Thank you both for the great info.!
  3. I also happened to stumble upon A Taste of New York just a couple of nights ago. I tend to look in that direction (up the street from Waialae on 11th Ave) every now and then in hopes of seeing a "Re-opening" sign for Sis Kitchen which is a loss I don' t think I'll ever get over. Anyway, thought it was interesting. They are going for the "Stage Deli" theme where you order a sandwich with a famous name. In my opinon, the price is a bit high for what most people would want to pay for a sandwich (especially here) but these sandwiches are equivalent to at least twice the size of the "average" sandwich. The Ruben was very good. The bread was crisp on the outside, the meat was good, but it could have used a little more Russian Dressing. I agree with you glossyp, I had the Caesar Salad and thought it could use a few improvements. Actually, I was impressed with the dressing itself. It had good zest and it was far better than most I've had at more up-scale restaurants. I was dissappointed that it was served on green leaf lettuce and probably wouldn't order it again unless I could request romaine. It's just not the same without that crunch and the acidity in Caesar dressing just destroys leaf lettuce. Not sure if I liked the idea of having the pickels sitting on the table as a self-serve item either. I would however, go back to try the other sandwiches and have the cheesecake.
  4. Anyone have any suggestions on where to go for Thai food on Oahu? My absolute favorite thus far is Pae Thai on King St. I've tried a few other's and haven't enjoyed them quite as much. I'm wondering if this is because they serve food from different reigons, and thus use different ingredients but don't know much about them. I'm assuming the food served at Chiang Mai is of course Northern, etc., etc. But it seems for the most part, that many of the restaurants serve the same dishes yet they seem to vary greatly in flavor (maybe it's just me!). Anyway, I'd love to learn more about Thai cuisine if anyone has any info. and is willing to enlighten me! Thanks!
  5. Hello Everyone! I am new to this (as in, this is my first post) so I hope I'm doing this correctly)! Anyway in regard to alohabear's post, where is your favorite spot for the gravy burger? And, is Guriguri still around? If anyone knows where on Maui (or any other island) you can get it please let me know. Oh, and one of the things I absolutely have to have each time I go to the BI is Cinnamon bread from a small bakery in Waimea (Kamuela) called Leilani Bakery. It's absolutely the best. I've searched most of the bakeries over here looking for something similar but nothing compares. Anybody have any suggestions? Aloha!
