  1. Was there last night 7-9pm, 75% full? Never been to the original location but the new place's decoration is pretty simple. Service did not 'wow' anyone but prices hard to beat. What are the best dishes to try?
  2. I went to their new location's opening (across from ToysRus) earlier this month, so would presume they're now open for business.
  3. Yes. From their website: ← Thank you for the update! And only if we can find out where En has relocated... (found the answer.. 4422 W10th, the old location of Wabi Sabi!)
  4. Is Wabi Sabi closed? Number is no longer in service.
  5. PaoPao, I'm a member of the Vancouver Club in downtown and will be hapy to take you there to keep me company as we relax with our cigars in their cigar room. BYOC and I'll be happy to share the scotch. By the way, tried out the East India Solera from Lustau, a sweet sherry, can't wait to pair it with a nice cigar. It got 94 points by Robert Parker and only retails at $19.50.
  6. Lovely place excellent bistro food. Check out their web page http://www.bistropastis.com/ for wine selection. The single item that really stands out for us: Basket of Freshly Baked Chocolat and Citrus Madeleines, 8.00
  7. Completely different styles, but Cheesecake, etc. is pretty good in my opinion. Almost like Japanese style, not sweet and very light. I wonder if Sen5es will do a special one for you?
  8. We took the 1 year old in her stroller to le Crocodile and had a great time!
  9. Fried chicken at Phnom Penh is not bad, no?
  10. Went there on Sunday night at around 7, usual killer oyster omelette. Service a little slow as expected but same food quality. Highly recommended!!!
  11. Orchid Delight is openning June 1, on the 2400-block of Burrard at West Broadway (next to Papaya Hut). ← Thank you, that is the best news I have heard on eG!
  12. Please has it moved or closed down? They have the best oyster crepe and chow-kwei-dill!!
  13. Okada is nice, but please, don't mention about gindara at Chiyoda, or the beef katsu for that matter. Any idea where the chef from Chiyoka went? I miss the black cod robatayako so much!
  14. This statement has me puzzled. You are either saying: a. the quality of their food varies with the makeup of their clientele; or b. your enjoyment of their food varies with their clientele. ← I think there was a bit of both. I wanted a Korean experience and they were playing Chinese music. I don't want to sound racist or anything, I am Chinese. It just had me wondering how come the Korean people that got off the bus went to the other place than Jang Mo Jib. Like would they cater to more of a Chinese taste than Korean taste? (ie there are Korean styled Chinese food). There's also a bit of "I want to hear all this Korean being shouted around the restaurant." I would say Jang Mo Jib caters to a lot of international students also. ← The owners probably hired more Chinese staff thinking that they can better serve their Chinese speaking customers in Richmond, that's all. Haven't been to Jang Mo Jib do they have good BBQ? Any good dishes to recommend? If it has good food, we'll certainly visit regardless of the servers' or customers' nationality or language spoken. I have been to too many authentic Chinese restaurants only Chinese go yet the food may not agree to my palate. The same will probably apply to Korean restaurants as well. Last 3: Kyung Bok Palace in North Vancouver - wang kalbi was excellent as always, chap chai was not as tasty as before, unfortunately they ran out of the marinated raw beef. Feenie's - burger, and hot dog is good but I think I prefer Red Onion's. Le Crocodile - the usual, liver terrine, tomato soup, rack of lamb.
  15. In my opinion, Top Gun in Richmond serves the best Dim Sum in Greater Vancouver at the moment, reservations a must - Top Gun Chinese Seafood 4151 Hazelbridge Way, Richmond, BC 604-273-3298 Sea Harbour Seafood Restaurant is also very good, a close second. Sea Harbour Seafood Restaurant, 3711 No.3 Road, Richmond, B.C. 604-232-0816 Top Gun and Sea Harbour really are much better than the dim sum joints in downtown. They cater to the competitive market in Richmond instead of luring the tourists and business lunch crowd. Sun Tung Kee in Richmond is as good, if not better than Landmark for Hot Pot - Sun Tung Kee Hot Pot Restaurant 8580 Alexander, Richmond, BC 604-207-0386 PS Other Chinese/Asian recommendations: If you feel like some very casual Cantonese dishes, try Congee Noodle House. It's the thinking man's Hon's - Congee Noodle House. 141 E Broadway, Vancouver , BC 604-879-8221 Feel like some Hainan Chicken Rice? Try out - Cafe D'Lite 3144 W. Broadway, Vancouver, BC 604-733-8882. Their deboned chicken rice dish is one of the best in the world. If you like authentic Taiwanese cuisine and don't mind a very casual setting, Kalvin's Restaurant has the best tea smoked duck dish in town (similar to the roasted duck but more tender and tasty - even better than Koon Bo's duck) - Kalvin's Restaurant 5225 Victoria Drive Vancouver, BC 604-321-2888 Of course, Vancouver is quite famous for its Vietnamese cuisine too, have fun!
  16. Watch for the new Korean restaurant (same owner as Kyung Bok Palace in North Vancouver) in Lansdowne Mall in Richmond. It should be opening later this month. Their wang kalbi (BBQ short ribs) is to die for. Opens till 2am daily last time we checked with the owners. Not related but we may be sending some students interested in Asian cuisine to work there as interns this summer.
  17. I feel a little embarrassed as a Vancouverite with my favourite local magazine giving such high ratings to Hon's. To me, it's an insult to the Chinese food enthusiasts in the city.
  18. We tried Opentable once and unfortunately did not work out. A 9:30pm weekday reservation at Feenie's was declined. Of course, we called the restaurant immediately and sorted out everything. Not sure if we will trust it a second time.
  19. Yes, very yummy! As the wife doesn't trust how restaurants weigh them, she started buying from T&T and cooking them at home.
  20. Just returned from Kei's Dining Bar, the special request spaghetti carbonara is definitely one of our favourite pasta dishes in town.
  21. Sebastien is a great wine guy, well deserved winner!
  22. Interesting comment about the music. I guess it depends on what you're looking for. We sometimes go to the Broadway and Ash Cactus Club as an alternative to noisy bars to save the yelling. Very happy about the smiles, yes you can always count on the smiles, even when you're asking for your third diet coke refill. One time we mailed in a comment card pointing out the tardy service from a hostess, the $25 coupon arrived within a week. Food at Cactus Club.. The only dish we would repeatedly order, blackened creole steak. Will have to try the burgers next time. Biggest complaints? I don't know, eating always seems to take a backseat when at Cactus. And with all the slurpee drinking, they have the most civilized and spacious washrooms, at least at their newer locations. Different places for different moods, never really consider Cactus as a restaurant, more like a lounge. And for that reason, we only frequent the newer ones with better decorations. Never really cared for Earl's or Milestone's, they always seem very tired. Does the new Earl at Paramount have nice washrooms too? We are big suckers for places with nice clean spacious washrooms.
  23. I find the writer too full of herself in a review that lacks in substance. Is she supposed to be a good food critic? Couldn't tell from her writing at all. Who cares where the owner is and who greeted her, who cares if folks recognized her, who cares if she normally pays for the bill or not. "When restaurant chef Damon Campbell is shuffled out to say hello... cynic in me wonders if he was brought out to show us that Henry (owner) wasn't in tonight." Give be a break, what a rude and ungrateful person. Sounds like a gossip columnist than someone passionate about food.
  24. One high-end restaurant which will remain nameless, allowed us to bring a bottle, usually corkage is $50, but if your bottle is on their wine list, the corkage becomes the higher of $50 or 10% retail.
