  1. DUDE!!! If they have Bud Light in widemouth bottles, I am SO there!
  2. In Dupont Circle I'd go for three restaurants in this order: 1. Pesce 2. Tabard Inn 3. Johnny's on the Half Shell
  3. "In the 1960's when I worked as a waiter at the old Hot Shoppe at Wisconsin and Van Ness there were several elderly singles who had dinner there every night. EVERY NIGHT. When they didn't come in we were worried that perhaps something may have happened. I remember one night being dispatched by the hostess to walk down to McLean Gardens and knock on a woman's door. The hostess was worried that something might have happened to her-she was so regular, so dependable." We should all be so lucky when we are that age to have people around us besides family who care enough to do such things. That's part of what makes a city a community.
  4. I notice the menu has the following caveat attached to certain dishes: "*This item contains raw ingredients. In addition, items on this menu are cooked to order. Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood or eggs may increase your risk of food-bourne illnesses, especially if you have certain medial condition [sic]." Is this a new trend, or have I just failed to notice the government-warning style text on other menus? edited for grammar
  5. umm, it's called a "blog" and not a "newspaper" for a reason people. Accusations of "yellow journalism" overstate and oversimplify the case in just the same fashion as the post about Corduroy supposedly did.
  6. I walk by it all the time and have often wondered about it. The review is very positive, but most of the reader comments following the review are quite negative. Has anyone been here been there recently?
  7. Saw that article too. Made me ponder about trying Smirnoff again. I used to buy Cardinal Vodka (in Ithaca, NY), which was cheap and dry, but it's not available where I moved (DC). So now I'm without a house brand to buy without thinking about and trying various brands. edit: spelling (d'oh)
  8. I just moved back to DC in August and have been to BdC twice, both times on the weekend for a late lunch. Things that stick in my mind: 1. too slow about offering a second glass of wine, in fact, once I was never offered a second glass even though my teeny, weeny, empty glass sat on the table for the last 35 minutes of lunch. Distressing. 2. Went once at night to see about dinner there; it was so insanely noisy I turned around and left. 3. Service is neither "French" nor "haughty" nor even "brusque." More than anything it reminds me of service in Eastern Europe back in the late 80s and 90s when I was living there: erratic, never particularly good, and not for any discernable reason. 4. Nice mussels the two times I had them, which for me is enough to make me tolerate the rest of it for lunch with friends, not for dinner or any special occassion certainly. benjy
  9. i've been told that their selection declines as the year comes to an end, and best at the start of the year due to tax regulations (something about not wanting to end the year with a lot of stock in order to reduce tax liability). whether this is true, or just an excuse made by loyal fans of the bar i know not. it's okay, but could be great if only they could do something about the bad food (some decent pub/beer garden eats would be nice). b
