  1. Wow! Great blog. I love wagashi (especially nerikiri and all the daifukus) and have been wanting to make them for ages but can't be arsed to make my own anko (and don't trust fake anko in Dutch supermarkets). I'd give anything for a soft mochi strawberry-filled daifuku right now...

p/s: the last daifuku picture is wonderful..the mochi looks exactly the way i like it!

  2. Turkey is my 2nd must-go place (the first being Morocco) in 2007! I nearly went in March earlier this year but couldn't leave the country as my Dutch visa wasn't approved yet (you can't leave during the application process).

There a Turkish bakery close to where I live and I desperately want to try the baklavas and sweets but they come in hunks/groups of 8 euros so I'll have to wait til I'm out of the poorhouse before I can take a bite!

    Thanks for the wonderful blog:)

  3. Hello! Thanks Hiroyuki for the recipe (I didn't use it though because I only had red miso) .

I made simple butteryaki with jacket potatos (my host mum scooped everything out and threw away the best part- the skin ! ) and honey-glazed carrots + brocolli. Oh and we had miso soup again after a long, long time . Great dinner:D

Maybe it was the tartare sauce egg combo (egg mayo) after all, I'm going to try that on Friday. Thanks!

  4. Hmmm, none of them actually!

The dish I have in mind is a piece of salmon with some chunky wettish sauce (egg yellow) heaped on top of the salmon. It's been 3+ years since I had it but I think it had cream and probably eggs (that explains the chunky part I suppose) . My host families all called it salmon with butter sauce... The sauce was rich and creamy..really good.

It's strange- I thought it was really popular in Japan because all my host families cooked it !

  5. I'm desperately hoping someone from Japan reads this (it's already 9pm there now:/) because I want to make something tonight!

I remember eating salmon with some kind of butter sauce at every single one of my host families' houses (each of us had 5 or so families) so I reckon it must be a very common dish. It was great!

Can someone tell me the recipe for this?

If not , a simple recipe made from shoyu or miso would suffice.

If no one replies this (I really want that butter sauce haha) , I'll use this: 1/4 cup mirin, 1/4 cup white miso, 1/4 cup sugar. Combine in pan over medium heat and whisk. Slather over fish (the recipe says cod but I'm using salmon) and grill.

  6. All the answers to my questions above and the ones I got through PM have disappointed me. I can't believe Malaysia is known just for laksa :raz: And I can't believe Singapore is considered having the best food in South East Asia. Let me tell you that Singaporean food is essentially Western Malaysian food (they stole it from us and made it popular) Famous 'Singaporean' dishes such as Ampang (a Malaysian town!) Yong Tau Fu , Penang Asam Laksa, Ipoh (another Malaysian town) sar hor fun etc definitely originated from Malaysia. Man, the other May is going to be so pissed off now ;)

And yes, I do feel very lucky to have found a real Dutch family, living in a quaint Dutch town, in a typical canal house, surrounded by 4 churches ,have a Dutch boyfriend, even know how to make stoofvlees now and buy cake flour from the local windmill..I'm definitely living the Dutch experience  Oh ,incidently my host family's friends are looking for their first au pair so if anyone's interested...PM me.

  7. Wow, it's still open! I could've posted dinner :raz: and drinks. Unicum (strange Hungarian liquor) is disgusting!

Ludja : I'm not sure if they used potato flour, all I remember was that the noodles was sort of bread-ish. The vanilla sauce was quite thick and strong but on the other hand, it's not something you get sick off easily.

Jen: I'm going to keep my hopes up. I don't see why Farmboy and I wouldn't work (eventhough we do fight quite often on who's going to do the dishes:D). Farmboy is uh not... physically gifted (I sure hope he doesn't read this!)which is why he doesn't want his picture posted. but is hilarious and very nice..More importantly, I like him hehehe or right..

You have to try more Malaysian food! Or make your own (ie like that ikan bakar recipe I left here :raz: )

Markemorse: The Netherlands is a comfortable place to live in and I enjoy the gezelig-ness of it. Of course I wish I've never set foot in this klompen country sometimes but I'm sure everyone away from home feels that time-to-time. Will definitely not go to Wau!

Tejon: Sorry it took me so long to answer your Tokaji question. I lost it amongst the other posts. I'm not familiar with wines , most times I drink bastardised 2-euro bottles of wine so I cannot judge. Also the Tokaji I ordered is not Tokaji Aszu (my Tokaji at the bar -20 euro ,he said if I wanted Tokaji Aszu , it would be 78 euro so you can imagine how unspecial my wine must have been  )

Percyn : Where is the walking street?? We leave tomorrow morning, though

    And finally... Hi sadie_siemesecat :)

  8. Kouign Aman (what does your username mean anyway?) : Thank you very much for your tips on the spacecakes. I see you have had quite some experience :raz: I'm really going to try making Indonesian layer cake (spicecake, spekkoek) one of these days.

Abra: Thanks for your pictorials. I especially enjoyed Ayam Taipan and I still can't believe you liked Pak Chan! Tell me if you want more (this offer only stands if I do go home though! )

Chufi : The Dutch Cooking thread was my introduction to Dutch cuisine and it's a thread I still follow faithfully. Farmboy has requested me to make stofvlees next weekend and I'm going to follow your recipe. I reckon I'm going to be a very good Dutch wife :raz:

  9. My Last Post

I generally don't have itineraries when I travel. I stop where I want, eat when I happen to see a restaurant/stall/picnic blanket :raz: I like and most times, I don't make reservations for hotel rooms.

Today, we happened to come across this little restaurant near the Danube. I'm sorry to say that I can't remember what it's called except that it had a white exterior . It wasn't too expensive, our bill was only 8000HUF including tip for 2 main courses, 1 dessert, 2 soft drinks and 2 coffees.

I had beef (tenderloin) yet again which was served with green grapes and chopped porcini mushrooms. According to my tastebuds, there was also some white wine added into the sauce. Very tender. It wasn't TOO special though because there's only so much you can do with a lump of meat. Beef will taste like beef (which is exactly how I like it).

    gallery_28660_3809_20855.jpg

Farmboy despises mushrooms. He cannot tolerate mushrooms in soup or even on pizzas. His dish had some kind of mushroom sauce and despite that, he ate everything! The veal was delicious (he said that. I personally thought mine was better) but the parsley rice was undercooked (there's nothing I hate more than undercooked rice! so gritty!).

    gallery_28660_3809_23306.jpg

We were quite full by then but wondered how we could possibly miss dessert. I was stuck between a traditional Hungarian torte (eGullet-ers have been recommending this!) and the sweet poppy seed noodles but finally decided on the noodles because I've at least have had a torte (not a Hungarian torte though) but never sweet noodles.

This was the best of all. I still have dreams about it! The sweet poppy seed noodles were served with vanilla sauce and sprinkled with confectioner's sugar. Warm, melty..just great.

    gallery_28660_3809_8749.jpg

OK then, this is the end of my last post. Thank you for not laughing at my pathetic dishes and I hope to learn more from eGullet (I don't trust any recipe on the internet-or even books- except the ones from eGullet!)! I learnt how not to embarassed when taking pictures of food and markets ;-)

    Cheers!

  10. I stupidly left my camera cable at the cyber cafe  Very pissed off now but I hope to find it there when it's open at 10!

In the meantime ,you will have to be content with 2 food-unrelated pictures :

Today is the last day of this blog and I must say it was good fun although I haven't been able to update much the last few days (Farmboy was stuck to his computer ,playing Gothic 3 and then Budapest!). Thank you all for your encouragement and feedback.

My last post will be of lunch (unless of course my cable is lost forever) and then we shall sit back and enjoy Davina's foodblog

  11. Farmboy and I stopped by a restaurant called Box Utca today. According to the pictures of the wall, Paul McCartney and Mika Hakkinen have been there before. We only planned to have a drink as it was only 5.30 but then thought ah,what the heck, we might as well have dinner here!

I wanted to order the fillet mignon with roasted goose liver but then decided to order the grilled sirloin outlet filled with letcho-eggs . It was served with paprika sauce and noodles. The waitressed said it's a Hungarian dish and I was really looking forward to it but somehow , I didn't enjoy it that much. It seemed as if the beef was over-braised; so much so that most of the flavour has disappeared and the noodles tasted like 'mee hoon ke' minus the sauce (Price: 2450 ft).

    gallery_28660_3809_68956.jpg

Dutchie had the pheasant breast rolled in bacom with pickoing onion date ragout with croquette potatoes. This was delicious! I wish I ordered this! The croquette potatoes tasted like oliebollen , very nice to finish whatever sauce with. (2650ft)

    gallery_28660_3809_58958.jpg

Too full for dessert but we may stop by somewhere before going to bed.

  12. Pan: Yes, Hungary is a tip conscious society but is a little bit different. It is considered bad taste to leave money on the table for the waiter. Instead if the bill is 4000HUF, you hand him 5000HUF and say keep the change or state how much change you want back. 10-15% is the norm. Of course, if service charge is already included, you don't have to tip but most people still round up ( 3000HUF for a 2700HUF bill etc). Apparently, you not only tip waiters but also cab drivers, hair dressers and even doctors!

  13. Jó napot!

Budapest is gorgeous! It's surprisingly clean- cleaner than Tokyo, Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur and almost as clean as central Singapore :raz:

We switched hotels this morning and was again conned by metro ticket checkers who wanted to fine us 7000HUF each because our metro tickets were invalid or something?? Eh? We finally compromised by buying a 3-day unlimited transport ticket which we will probably not use for 3500HUF each.

For brunch, we stopped by a small café called Nelson's (I think) close to our new hotel. It's very close to the synagogue (2nd largest synagogue in the world) and had the most amazing foie gras sandwich ! For something like 6 euro, you get a crisp, fresh baguette with foie gras and some red onions on the side. I'm definitely going there again before I go back! I forgot to take my camera to brunch though  Budapest also has a wide® array of coffee than the Netherlands and luckily for us (first time for me!), the euro is stronger than the Hungarian forint so nothing was expensive!

Some pictures of nearby buildings (good thing the hotel wasn't so far or no pictures  )

Farmboy and I are going to hunt for Hungarian food tonight. Bye!

  14. eGullets will hate me; I have gone to the dark side

We had a burger. From McDonalds . And we are not sorry :raz: Farmboy is pissed off at the room and was already in a bad mood because the cab driver cheated us (I was pissed off about this too!). The fare was 3500 HUF (1 euro= 250 HUF) . We gave him a 5000 HUF note and wanted to leave a small tip of around 500HUF. He stuffed a few notes in our hands and drove in a hurry but there was only two 200HUF notes there. Ah well, it's really not the amount of money but it's just something which iritates me  I still like Hungary though, the buildings are GORGEOUS! I'm going to take lots of pictures tomorrow morning!

We stopped by McDonalds for a quick dinner before dropping our stuff at the hotel (hostel ,really).

I don't know if this is only available at Hungarian McDonalds but we certainly don't have this in Japan, Malaysia and the Netherlands:

    gallery_28660_3809_26297.jpg

I was admonished by the guard after taking this picture. He told me "NO TAKE PICTURE!" Oops :raz:

I've never seen this burger elsewhere too . It was great, actually. I wish they sell this at all McDonalds

    McFarm Burger

    gallery_28660_3809_55334.jpg

I think it was some sort of turkey burger. Really tasty.

After checking in, we went to a local bar for a drink. Farmboy had a 0.75 liter glass of Hungarian beer and I had a bottle of Tokaji wine. The bill was only 20 euro!

I will elaborate further on Hungarian wine tomorrow . It's probably not a good idea for me to type so much now lest I accidently type something inappropriate.

    Horrid picture of wine glass

    gallery_28660_3809_68681.jpg

We felt hungry after our drinks so we went to this very busy restaurant which had a small casino upstairs.

Farmboy ordered pizza and I ordered some kind of Giant Lobster pasta. Both our orders were DISGUSTING. The pizza was hideously salty and my pasta had no taste at all!

    gallery_28660_3809_87390.jpg

I'm sure tomorrow will be much better! I'm going to recover from that awful meal now. The bill was 25 euro ,including drinks and we should've left a 15% tip but we didn't simply because the food was awful and took 30 minutes to arrive.

Good night and sorry that this is such a boring post. Promise to write something more interesting tomorrow

  15. Quick reply,

Abra: those brown bits are raisins

Kaneel : I'm not at all familiar with Surinamese food. The only ones I've ever had came from the supermarket with names like Tjau Min (Fried noodles in Chinese) and which also happen to taste like a kind of Chinese noodles we have in Malaysia. I'm wondering if Suriname has a large Chinese population??

C.Sapidus : Thanks for the nasi goreng. Or rather, no thanks :raz: You're making me crave this pink-ish/orange-ish nasi goreng my Mother would occassionally make...

Milagai : Great link, it sounds like he really enjoyed Malaysian food! One thing though, Baba & Nyonyas DEFINITELY eat pork (pork is the meat of choice, barely any beef )

  16. I am writing this on the train now. My flight leaves at 1935 from Eindhoven airport and was so busy this morning that I didn't have time to update but I have some new pictures of the market in Arnhem (taken around noon) for you!

I don't shop at this market often. I 've only been there 2-3 times as it's a little bit too faraway from where we live.

    gallery_28660_3809_92918.jpg

Sweet shop (of course this being Holland, more than half of it was drop  ).

    gallery_28660_3809_124660.jpg

Do you like drop (Dutch liquorice)? I don't, especially the old-fashioned ones with salt but I'm quite addicted to krijtjes (pronounced krai-tjes). I'm not even sure how to describe them but they're filled with 'something'and there's a layer of drop in the middle.

OK this is really expensive, I think my card is going to run out so see you guys later tonight or tomorrow!

Oh wait: here's lunch (kibbeling- fish nuggets)

    gallery_28660_3809_115446.jpg

  17. PMS... *sigh*. I don't really crave chocolate (though I like it) or chips. I crave steaks, pasta, burger, FRIES, noodles, Chinese food...lots of beef and potatos in general!

Oh and fast food. McDonalds, BK and especially Kentucky Fried Chicken (I buy the variety meal- 2 piece fried chicken, some wings, 2 crispy strips, fries and a cola and eat it all in 20 minutes)

  18. Whoops!

I forgot to report the after-effects of Operation Spacecake. We only had a small slice each and the effects were slow.

I got a headache at first and I swear, the floor was moving. Anyway, there was lots of cycling mid-air (long story) with the Farmboy who thought it was hilarious. I don't think I've seen Farmboy this funny before.

The thing with spacecake (or at least this one) is that it makes me so sleepy! After 30 minutes of festivities, I just slept, as did he. The best sleep I got this week

ETA: I wanted to make simple Cajun fried chicken tonight but Farmboy 's locked me out of the kitchen because he insists on making Bobotie for dinner...

  19. This is a very disappointed Mei reporting again from Arnhem, The Netherlands :

Oberhausen was so disappointing! There wasn't much to do, the local castle (Schloss?) looked quite pathetic (more like a giant Dutch house really) and the market only had a few stalls . In the end, the only person who had any fun was Farmboy who was happily pushing his little car to the limit (no speed limits)

Here are some pictures I took of the market:

    gallery_28660_3809_113313.jpg

Farmboy and I agreed that Oberhausen is one of the ugliest places we've ever been. Buildings weren't pretty, the city itself looked quite poor..it's probably best described as "former Soviet Union" (although it isn't )

Oh, did I mention that we also had the ickiest bread ever? We threw it away  I did come back with a pair of boots though

Dinner tonight will be in Arnhem(didn't see any interesting restaurants in Oberhausen although to be fair, I didn't do any research regarding this).!I'm not even sure what to make yet!

    Laters!
