  1. Can't wait for the Sfoglia review tonight/tomorrow. I think we can all use a change of subject by now.
  2. Well written post. Sarcastic wit and a bit of snark was also found in the Times write up of Anna Nicole Smith recently: DISPLAYING ABSTRACT - Anna Nicole Smith, former pinup, actress and television personality who was famous for being famous, sporadically rich and chronically litigious, dies at age 39 Also in an article about the rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard a few years ago in which the refer to him as "Mr. Bastard". Unfortunatley I can't track that one down.
  3. I haven't noticed such a soft spot. Just ask Paul Liebrandt. Bruni calls 'em as he sees 'em. When I wrote that I thought of Liebrandt as the exception that proves the rule...I still do. (of course, I'm not sure that Bruni thought of two stars as the slapdown that we did) ← Lordy...I wish I could goto dinner at Gilt under Paul's reign again. That was a great meal and alot of fun too.
  4. Isn't it great to laugh again, people???
  5. Why would a sublime steak being served in those evirons be the fault of the reviewer?
  6. see here's the problem...you're awfully opinionated about a city that you're not very familiar with (not anymore anyway). almost everything creative and interesting being done today in food, fashion, art, dance and music in NY (excepting ballet and classical/jazz -- my personal preferences actually) is downtown or in Brooklyn. literally. but anyway..the fact that you would confuse Graydon Carter and the Little Owl is just embarrassing (since you're so opinionated about the topic). furthermore, um, no, none of us have any interest in waiting at velvet ropes...that's a mug's game. the last thing in the world that Little Owl, Degustation, Ssam Bar, etc. are, are "velvet rope" places. (edit: put differently, there aren't too many people from NY waiting outside of those velvet rope joints....) I'm a lawyer too, I have the same tendency to talk like an authority on everything, but I'm not going to claim to have the slightest clue what the habits are of a different generation than mine own in Tampa. ← Well said.
  7. Brilliant!
  8. That's pretty funny.
  9. Considering that a month ago Chang thought this restaurant might fold I really don't think it's a bad thing that he got such a stellar review. Granted things were picking up on their own but still.... Better to have place that's hard to get into than one that closes.
  10. Boring is one thing but annoying?
  11. do you think they'll ask him why he didn't call first? ← That would NOT be good PR. It'd be pretty funny though.
  12. By this point this thread has grown so much that it will be on Eater or Gawker by the end of the day. I wouldn't be surprised if the restaurant or a representative from USHG doesn't reach out to Nathan by the end of the week. Justified or not it will make for good PR.
  13. This thread appaently is apparently entertaining enough to reach gawker.com. http://gawker.com/news/williamsburg/restau...rant-234427.php
  14. They can't seem to settle on a name, what is this, the John Mellencamp of restaurants? The whole concept seems to be dreadful, on par with a Britney Spears restaurant. ← Except this one will be outrageously successfull.
  15. Walked by it last night. It's next to the Ear Inn.
  16. A three star review might be setting unrealistic expectations.
  17. I ate at Kasadela last night for the first time. I enjoyed it very much. The room and the music are great. The staff is fun. The food is good -- although nothing near blow-away great, as at Yakitori Totto. Just good. (Compare the skewered beef tongue at the two places. At Totto, it's sublime. Here, it's slightly overspiced, and maybe slightly overcooked as well.) But all in all very enjoyable. Prices may be a little on the high side for an East Village izakaya, but still are gentle. And you get a great atmosphere in return. The sake selection is extremely well-curated, especially the specials. Now raji can tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. ← The owner of Kasaela is one of the friendliest hosts in NYC. So welcoming and the sake selection is great for the price.
  18. Not to mention that it would be preposterous for someone on the recognition level of McInerny to even try to fly under the radar and not be spotted while reviewing restaurants.
  19. Interesting..when I went there for a drink the weekend before Christmas I sat at the bar and was told that they most certainly did not serve food there. I didn't want to sit at a table so it was a bit dissapointing. Had two modestly priced beer and left.
  20. Perhaps this is what happens when so few noteworthy restaurants open in a season.
  21. I just had left over Fatty crab short ribs for lunch at work today! I think they were better today than when I ordered them at the restaurant on Sunday!!
  22. I wonder about that. (Your average Shake Shack customer certainly knows and cares who Danny Meyer is.) (Which is not to say that I disagree with the rest of your post. I don't.) ← I disagree to the point that the year I spent at The Shake Shack the number one question aside from where the condiment table was located was who runs this establishment.
  23. We should start wearing ID badges.
  24. Went at 2:00 on Sunday and there was no wait. We were sat immediately in a noot near the back. Service was very polite and informed. BLT Burger is massive and the burger was nicely charred on the outside. Peppercorn sauce was requested on the side and it made a nice dipping sauce. Had the waffle fries with chili and cheese which were ok. Fries were a bit soggy and the chili frankly seemed a bit dry like it had been made much earler and was losing moisture but it had a nice flavor. I had the lamb burger w/ merguez sauce. Lamb was beautifully charred and a bit over medium rare but not terribly so. The only fault I had with my burger is that the sauce and toppings (olives, onions) were on the bottom of the burger meaning that they turned the bottom thinner bun into mush in no time. I don't know if that is an intentiona l kitchen choice or if it was a service mistake but I'd rather have the condiments on top nexgt time although it did show off a nicely charred piece of meat. We ordered a side of coleslaw too and it was no different than the complimentaty slaw you get with your burger. Slaw was too acidic...needed to be cut with something a little sweet to find a better balance. It's a very good almost brilliant burger but I would hate to have to wait to eat it. While we were there things started filling up a bit and Laurent was there in casual dress having some lunch at the bar and chatting with some friends. While the service is very polite there were a few too many busboys eager to clear the table and would come by every few seconds to check. Not really a criticism as it is nice to get attention but ratehr it seemed like they were waiting for the big rush to come later and had too many people on the floor.
  25. This blogger had a similar experience at Le Cirque recently and his mother wrote a letter....here is how the story ends http://www.amateurgourmet.com/the_amateur_..._from_siri.html
