  1. I think Tout Va Bien is a fun place to eat... been there for 60 years and has some amazing Beef Borguinone. I like to go around Beajoulais Nouveau time in November - it is a real party! 51th street West of 8th ave.
  2. I went recently, and had a very mixed experience... La Cote Basque was probobly the restaurant where I fell in love with food as a child.. the first memory of great food I have was lobster bisque there at the ripe old age of 12. I hadn't been so excited about a going to a restaurant in a long time. Bistro cooking is my favorite; just to imagine all that rich, saucy, LCB French culinary talent being focused into simple bistro fare was exciting. The room, for starters, may be the best looking bistro in NYC. It is lush, luxe, and elegant. The steak tartare was great - served very cold..an interesting spin on the norm-- maybe some tomato product used? Quenelles were great of course, no brainer there. Gazpacho was one of the best I have had. However for the main dishes, the most anticipated plates were serious letdowns. Tournedos Rossini - a favorite of mine - were just plain bad! I didn't realize it was possible to screw that up, but apparently it is. The steak I ordered medium was rare, and the foie seemed to be of poor quality. I figured that sending back the steak for more cooking would be a mistake, not knowing if the same piece of dying foie would be returned in even worse shape. Now I usually love a rare steak, but something about the quality or character of the meat made this one not palatable. I was heartbroken. The other highly anticipated entree was the Pig's Trotter stuffed with foie gras and truffles. This unfortunalty came out a tepid, mushy mess. The problem here seemed to be lack of skill on the cook's part - not cooked long enough, at a high enough temperature. Obviously, LCB isn't cheap at all, so it will be a while before I return - other places to go. BUt the important thing for me is that I will return, and I'll get excited about it all over again. The thing is, the menu is GIGANTIC, and there are so many different styles of dishes to choose from - old La Cote Basque classics still dot the pages next to steak frites and cassoulet. A couple of $35 letdowns won't stop me from going back to where it all started, though. I just hope it all goes better next time.
  3. Momofuku is a very special place... the food really is delicious. The fried pork dumplings are the best I have ever had, and the pork buns are something I would travel across town for if a craving struck. I hope the menu here evolves and changes, so there are always new treats to try! I am a loyal follower...
  4. Here are a few things tossed out there... In Chappaqua - Crabtree's Kittle House has the best winelist anywhere in the state outside of the city, is a mansion and has wonderful, seasonal food.. Plumbush Inn in Garrison/Cold Spring - A beautiful country "mansion" setting and, althought I havent been there in years, great food as far as I can remember. I don't even know if it is still around, but check it out. Garrison is such a beautiful part of the county. La Panetiere in Rye is in a freestanding house, and has perhaps the best French food in Westchester.. Beautiful Gardens, and location - very close to the water -to boot.. I think we have got something to work with here!!
  5. I feel that it is only fair that all the other current 4 stars get a new review as well - I imagine none of them feel as confident with thier rating as they did Tuesday.
  6. Thank you!
  7. No help?
  8. Does anyone have a comprihensive red burgundy vintage chart for the entire century they could share? I am in need of some help!
  9. The fried pork dumplings at Momofuku are the best I have had - ever, anywhere. That restaurant is amazing.
  10. Terrific - all New York needs is another trendy club for Paris Hilton to frequent. However, with all the beds, she should feel right at home..
  11. Crispo has not been mentioned... one of the best around for the price.
  12. My neighborhood shop, Fascati's on Henry Street, has as good I have had anywhere. If I am between Grimaldi's down the hill, or Fascati's - I probobly choose the latter.
  13. Corner Bistro is completely overrated.. I don't know what all the hype is there.. Burger not as juicy as others, bacon too crispy, and the whole thing is too tall to comfortably eat.
  14. Also, Bubby's Brooklyn has an amazing slider that got no credit...
  15. This list is outrageous, Parker Meridian isn't in the top 10? Crazy talk. Now, I eat at Blue Ribbon probobly more than any other restaurant, and I think the burger there is an absolute joke. How that made it into the top 100, let alone the top 10, will always be a mysterty to me. JG Melon is my #2 burger in NYC, and I am happy to see they got at least that one right. If anyone is looking for one of these to try - that is a tried and tested choice.
  16. Oh, and Professor Plum, I see that was your first post on eGullet... Let me be the first to say, "Welcome"! It is always exciting to have a new voice here on eGullet - the place where THE REAL food, wine and restaurant experts come...
  17. Professor Plum, interesting choice... I'll have to try that sometime in the near future. Maybe next week...
  18. I am dissapointed in the egullet "foodie" community-- I thought there would be many more ideas on where to enjoy such a delicious treat.
  19. Opinions?
  20. Had an amazing tasting menu at Bouley.. not TOO over the top. Tocqueville is great too.
  21. Jacques in New Orleans is amazing - but then again, I am 24...
  22. Krispy Kreme all the way.

    Landmarc

Went to Landmarc last night for the first time. Sat at the bar, had wine, appetizers, and a truly great experience. The food is delicious, the decor warm and attractive, and the wine list is one of the most remarkable, revolutionary things I have ever seen in a restaurant. Prices like this are simply not available anywhere else, except your local wine store. Only my wine store doesn't have nearly as exciting a selection, nor does it have a huge grill pit for steaks. After one experience, I am sold - and considering making it 2 nights in a row!
  24. I know what you are saying-- I wasn't thrilled with it the first time I had it, but I came around.. I am sure that not everyone learns to like them as much as me, however. Speaking of cheesesteaks, I heard a rumor that there is supposed to be an amazing new place for them over on 44th or 42nd street way far west- like 10th or 11th ave- anyone know what that is all about? I hear it is just a "stand". One more idea to chew on - The Burger Joint at Le Parker Meridian has the best burger in New York City.
  25. 2 important additions to this thread -- 1. Crif Dogs - One of the finest hot dog joints in the city - not for the upper east siders, though.. Try the Sourcheesedog - big half sour pickles and gooey melted chedder on your dog (get it bacon wrapped), or the Chiuahua - another bacon wrapped dog with avocado sour cream and salsa - amazing. St Marks between 1st and A 2. B/B Sandwich Bar, on West 3rd between MacDougal & 6th only makes cheesesteaks, and only makes them THIER way. It is a pretty good way, though. The first time I went I wasn't sure how much I liked it - there is a little spicy pepper relish or something on there - but over the following weeks, I found myself mysteriously exiting the A train at West 4th with hunger pangs... Definatly worth a try, and they only get better and better.
