  1. I have read that chana dal is extremely low on the glycemic index. Relative to other legumes, eating chana commonly leads to an exceptionally low blood sugar response in diabetics.
  2. I pretty much always go for cereal with milk. Just recently I was defending my practice of not eating breakfast to a concerned friend by explaining that I would way rather have my bowl of cereal at midnight than in the morning. Last night was Puffins with whole milk. Yum.

  4. Sorry, I was referring to the San Francisco Bay Area. MV/PA = Mountain View/Palo Alto.
  5. Re: South Bay restaurants We recently moved away from the area, and are missing our favorite spots: DeeDee's on Middlefield Rd on the MV/PA border (best $5 lunch), Saravana Bhavan (best South Indian, hands down. Definitely try the mixed vegetable paratha, only served at dinner), and Amber (when hankering for high-end). Never "got" Sue's. So blah, so expensive. If dining on Castro, I'd take any other hole in the wall Indian restaurant over Sue's. I'm in central Florida now, where an actual branch of Woodland's is our saving grace on the Indian culinary front. It's always packed, and always good.
  6. Hi, I'm a brand newbie. This is how I make chai: Boil together 6 cups water, 2 cups milk, 2 slices fresh ginger, 1 cinnamon stick, 6 green cardamom, 6 cloves, and 1/4 cup brown sugar. Simmer 5 minutes, then remove from heat, cover the pot, and let spices steep a bit. Add tea (I like PG Tips) and return to boil. Cover and simmer 5 minutes more. Strain and serve. I love the rich flavor of the twice boiled milk. In winter, I add black peppercorns and bay leaves and perhaps fennel seeds to the masala.
  7. Hi, I'm new here. Might as well just jump right in, I suppose. I love beets with horseradish. It's a magical combination.
